Well I must say Grzmo is comeing along very nicely I'm going very slow with him because he had some very big trust issuse and biteing issues because of the trust issuse. Someone obviously betrayed him badly and mabir even abused him he was totaly terrified of hands if he could see them in any way. so I took things slow with my hands behind my back and trid to avoid any kind of direct eye contact. I had to wait I just talked and talked and sang and talked and did I mention talked until I couldn't Talk anymore then one night about 2 months ago I heard him say kiss kiss and make the kissing noise so I said do you wan a kiss. Then I was a little leary because if he decided to bite I didn't want it to be on my face. So I went around to the side of the cage so I could give him a kiss through the bars so I had control not him it didn't take but a couple seconds and he stuck he beak through the bars and I kissed the top of his beak he was so excited and so was I It became our nite time thing before bed to get a kiss and I'd say I love you and he'd say I love you and then I'd cover him. he's a very sweet bird he even know his manners when I give him food he always says thank you and If i ask him if he wants something he always says Please he also says your welcome if I say thank you for the nice kiss he says your welcome. its too cute. he has a very large vocabulary I must say. When he calls me he starts off very sweet with comere comere and if I say in a minute he gets a very angry voice and say get in here. About a week ago he started rubbing his chin with his foot and putting his head down and fluffing up his head and neck feathers so I took that as an ivitation for a scritch. so I asked him if he wanted a little scritch and he sat there with his head down rubbing his chin and head with his foot so I reach in very slowly and he watching my hand and I know he's scared but I also know he wants me todo this so I said to him no bite mommy or mommy will go away. all the while getting closer to his head well he let me scritch his little head and neck for about 10 seconds and then he turned and tried to bite. It was a starting point and now everyday the scritches get a little longer and he still lunges but not as often. that brings us to last night I was talking to him before bed by his cage door and he was sitting on the perch I have attached to the door of his cage. all of a sudden he lunged and before I could move he got my face but he didn't bite me he kissed me. I guess he was tierd of being kissed through the bars and wanted to let me know somehow that he wouldn't bite me. I praised him big time and told him what a good boy he was for not biting and what a nice kiss and thankyou soooo much for being such a good bird. So I think our relationship has turned a corner I think it time to work on Step ups what do you think. he still doesn't like leaving his cage he does come out and sit on top of it but doesn't like to go away from it but I'm going to try step ups anyway. he is absolutly terrified of a perch so there isn't any hope of stick training him. so I'm going to have to use my hand and probubly take a few bites from that enormous beak of his ouch. but we will try and see if he's ready. Apparently she's got a screaming problem with her Grey she posted about the problem. I think it probubly because the bird is locked in its cage all the time she doesn't let him out for mor than an hour or two a day and the bird is obviously very unhappy. I hope she finds a wonderful forever home very soon.

If its only a couple they will grow back quickly. its definatly not enough to throw him off balance. Tyco used to chew all her primary and secondary flight feathers completely off on her left wing and that really put her off balance she would fall constantly. I had her wings evened out on both sides because she would fall so hard. now that she's in my home and happy she doesn't chew her feathers at all and hasn't in 2 yrs touch wood. now she's got all her feathers and she broke quite a few as they were growing in but I just left her and tryed to keep her as quiet as possible while they where growing and its paid off wonderfully all brand new feathers on both wing. your bird will grow those feathers back in no time don't worry

I would say he's just playing and telling you he loves you in his little birdie way. that so cute.

Oh he is so Cute what a sweetheart You did the right thing. the parents will forget quickly so thats good I read somewhere that wild animals don't greive for long. About a year ago now I found a baby Squirral that had fallen from his nest. I raised him until he was weaned and then let him go in my back yard. I fed him puppy formula mixed with heavy cream apperently they need a really rich formula. he did really well when I found him he was only the size of 1/2 my baby finger about 1 inch He was so cute I called him Leroy. he was a Black squirral.

I would talk to her if it really bothers you and tell her that you have no intentions of throwing in the towel or giving up on your baby and ask her why she thinks this. Mabie she doesn't have what it takes to be a Parront and so she thinks nobody else does either. mabie she had a bird and couldn't handle it and gave it away and feels guilty about it. Thats what it sounds like to me anyway she sounds like she is very jealous of you.
-
First thing you have todo is ignore him when he's Plucking if your giving him attention of any kind good or bad by trying to stop him you may be encouurageing him to do it more because its getting him attention. give him lots of baths and mabie try to spray him with some Aloevera juice this will stop any irritation.

How old is Beau now if he is just a baby I would say he's playing if he's around 2 years old he may just be starting to feel a little frisky. He's won't be breeding age until around 5 yrs old but they do start feeling a little hormonal around 2yrs so Its hard to say what he's doing without a few more details.

Thats so great Poor little guy must have been scared to death thank goodness he is home safe and sound right where he belongs.

There are lots of people that are not cut out to be bird owners thats why the rescues are full. then there are people like me and others on this site that have the patients and love to work through all the special need that may crop up with owning a parrot. that why there are forums like this so that parrot owners can get the help they need nobody ever said it was easy but the joy the bring can be awesome. I'm afraid my life pretty much does revolve around my birds and I'm sure I;m not the only person that feels this way about them the are trully like my children and I worry about them I don't like to be away from them for long and if people don't want to come to my house because my birds make to much noise that their problem. do not take this the wrong way but its quite obvious to me that you do not have what it takes to be a bird owner and really should find the bird a new home.

I had to look back and check I set up her cage and all her toys when she turned 11 weeks old she will be 15 weeks tomorrow and I set up her toys and peches completely on the 19 of April. I just took her blanket off the grate yesterday because I hadn't seen her fall for awhile but I'm thinking mabie I might put it back because she fell twice this morning I use a heavy fleece blanket over her grate folded into a square so there is about 4 layers of cutioning and the put newspaper over it. she only actually fell once the second time she righted herself. I worry also but I guess its how they learn. I would wait another week or so if your worried just cover the bottom like I did it works really well she couldn't hurt herself if she tried

My baby just loves to be cuddled she will lay on my chest all night with her beak pressed up against my face or chin and if I stop she makes the cutest little scolding noises. and pushes her head even more up against me they are trully wondeful. I love my dogs but my birds are more like my children then my pets. I couldn't imagine my life without them and don't ever want to find out.

I have 2 of them and I would never even now they where around mine are extreamly quiet yes they talk and talk but they don't scream ever. Mow my Amazon and my Macaw are a different story. My birds are out all day long and mabie thats why Greys cannotbe kept locked up how woul you like an hour a day out of your cell its like being in jail. if you can not provide the proper care and attention your grey needs then he should be rehomed while he is still young please screan all potencial owner very well so he won't get bounced from home to home.

A few questions for when my baby CAG comes home
Tycos_mom replied to orphan1965's topic in The Nursery
I cover all my birds at night My Macaw I only cover the top half because when I got him he was 8yrs old and was a little scared of being covered now he likes it and slleps better because of it. Adaya I also only cover the top half of her cage because she is just a baby and I want to be able to keep an eye on her. All the other are covered completely I have many sizes shape and textures of perches in my birds cages because thats what keeps there feet healthy I also cut many of my own perches off the bird safe trees in my back yard. They love to chew the bark off them and they are great for their feet. They all have at least one or 2 of these in their cages. -
Oh what a sweetheart I'll just bet your haveing a great time with him. I finally just took the blanket out of Adayas cage yesterday because she hadn't fallen for quite awhile and wouldn't you know she was hanging upside down from her tennisball rope toy and forgot not to let go and fell this morning Thank goodness that toy hangs fairly low only about 3ft from the floor so she didn't hurt herself. I may have to put the blanket back though we will see how she does. I love the cage you have for Ecko you'll have to go cut some nice branches for a few more perches and toys in there pretty soon he's going to want to start climbing and playing really quickly.
-
I love her new name and I'm so glad she is neg for pbfd that must be some releif to you soon she will be right as rain and you'll have yourself a wonderful companion.
-
This is true have you put anything new in his cage or around his cage or are you doing anything differnt than before Greys are very leary of new things and he may be afraid. or he may be just screaming for attention if you are giving him any kind of attention good or bad when he screams you may be reenforceing the behaviour you have to totaly ignore him when he screams and then when he is quiet imediatly give him praise and a treat and tell him what a good boy he is for being nice and Quiet. You may have to buy some earplugs until you can get him sorted out but the only way to break this is to ignore the bad and reenforce the good.it may take a couple weeks but it should work/ if its a contact call try something that you can live with like a little song or a whistle.
-
I hope that this will help I know you want them to breed so badly I hope you get them settled enough so that they are comfortable and you get some beautiful baby greys good luck
-
My birds wear a harness that is typicly not for birds but its very light weight and easy to put on its call a lil critter harness and the size is 6to10 inches. its a figure 8 and only weighs 5gr and only has 1 tiny clip you may have more luck finding one of these harnesses in your pet store. It also can be worn the other way so that the leash can be attached in the front

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2009/05/14 18:15

Can a 5 yr. old African Grey still learn to talk?
Tycos_mom replied to kayleetyler2's topic in Training
Don't worry I got Tyco at 41/2 and all she could do was make a few sound effects that she heard outside the tiny window that was in the room she was locked up in. she didn't talk and when she came to my house all that change within a couple weeks she was talking and and learning new words and sentences daily. now she has a huge vocabulary and uses her words correctly. if you birds going to talk she will. I love the red factor on her neck shes absolutly beautiful. your very lucky to have such a nice looking grey -
Happy hatch day Jasper get mom to make you a nice carrot cake with honey instead of sugar yumyum
