What a pretty little bird you have there. how old is he?
-
Well Half the natural wood in my house has been chewed, my kitchen cupboards doorframes, walls I have a hole upon top and behind my kitchen cabnet that is at least 18in in diameter thank goodness you can't see it the walls they have tried but I put a stop to that pretty quick before I had holes everywhere. As I type this Tyco is working on the trim around the bay window where her cage is again thank goodness its just the trim its not to much to replace now my Kitchen cupboards thats a whole other story Im going to have to find my a rich man or win the lottery to fix what they have destroyed. oh well nobody see it but me and I can live with it.

Fergie Has the biggest morning poops I have ever seen in my life. About a year ago now I went out a bought a brand new laptop for myself I'd only had it for about a month and it was beside my bed open. I had just got the birds out of bed and went to the kitchen to get their breakfast and when I came back Fergie was perched on the screan of my new laptop and I couldn't see the keyboard for poop. well I cleaned it off as best I could and let me tell you it was no easy task the poop had goten between the keys under the keys what a mess. then I sat down to work on the computer only about half the keyboard worked. Its a goodthing I had bought an extened warrenty that stated I was allow one thing that was my fault and they would fix it for free. So I took it in to be fixed and she looked at the keyboard and said you really should try to keep it a little cleaner. I couldn't tell her that it was bird poop in between the keys Itryed everything to get it out of ther even a knife I got as much as I could out. anyway she sent it away and I got it back with a brand new keyboard and a little note say please try to not eat around you keyboard

I do agree that bonding to a bird may be stronger for the human if they handfeed but not for the bird the bird will bond to their human just as well weather it was handfed by them or not. I do not think that an inexperianced person should hand feed a baby bird but if a person does want to take on that responsiblity than they should volinteer to work with a breeder for a couple months before getting their bird and learn how to feed and wean a bird properly if they choose that path I don't think it is right for a breeder to sell a 3or4 week old bird to someone that has no idea what to do or what the risks are and this happens far to often. To many baby birds die from people being told that they must handfeed their baby when all it really takes is for them to visit the baby regularly while it is young or at least have some involvement in the process through email and pictures as it grows. I think that it is important for the human so they get to know that baby from a very young age. it does not have to be through the act of handfeeding the bird although I do think the bond does become very strong if you are able to hand feed but it is definatly not the only way to become close to a baby bird and it should not be done if you don't know what your doing.

He's cute he may need grit also I think these wild birds have to have to help grind up their food.I don't know what kind of bird he is though.

I work 24 hours a week and I'm planning on cutting that to 18 hours within the month I work wed to sat 5pm to 11pm my birds get up at around 930am and are let out of their cages on the days I don't work they are out pretty much until bedtime because I really don't like to go out on my days off. the nights I work they are in their cages at 430 pm and don't get covered until I get home at 11:30pm but I do turn off the lights before leaving except for a small light over the kitchen sink so when the sun goes down they can sleep. In the morning it takes a good hour to prepare their breakfast and fresh fruits &veggies for the day for breakfast if its an egg morning they get either freach toast on 12grain with sweetpotato mixed into the egg., or an omlette with broccoli redpepper and a little grated cheese, or scrambled with 12 grain toast. some time I will make them fruitsalad for breakfast and mix it with granola cearel just depends on what morning it is. then after breakfast I fill their bowls with veggies and leafy greens. at dinner when I'm home they eat what I eat an the nights I work they will get bean and rice mash, or squash, sweetpotato with mixed veggies cooked either fresh or frozen if I make myself a pasta salad for work then before I put the onoins and dressing on I will give them pasta salad for dinner which has red peppers, orange peppers carrots, celery, and parmasan cheese init along with colored rotini cooked pasta witch they just love. all of these things take at least 45 minutes to prepare and feed not to mention the hour a day to wipe down the cages and change the paper and the 2 a week major clean that takes a good 2 hours. Then of course there is the one on one time that they all need it helps allot that my birds get along with each other so well so I can spend time with 2 or more at a time and there is no jealousy with Adaya she needs me more right now being a baby so she gets up an hour before everyone else and we have cuddle time. then around noon I take her and another bird for a walk around the neighbourhood for about 45 minutes when we get home its bath time after a quick bite to eat. I would say that because I have quite a large flock that most of my time revolves around them. I do love it and wouldn't have it any other way but they are allot of work. Thank goodness I have a job that I can go shopping for there food while I'm at work or I'll do it after work so when I do come home from work I don't have to go anywhere else. I need another day off so I have even more time to spend with them:laugh:

How often should I feed Cantaloupe to my CAG?
Tycos_mom replied to myafricanqueen's topic in The GREY Lounge
My Tyco loves cantalope also but only if it nice and ripe if its not ripe enough she won't touch it fussy girl. Cantakope is a source of vitamin a so its good for yor grey. -
an outdoor aviary he is going to be one spoilt little guy. I wanted to get one for my birds a couple years ago but they just wanted to much money for them and then I saw one in the paper for sale but I couldn't find anyone with a large enough truck to bring it home. It was beautiful the person made it himself and had sold his house he had to get it out of there and was only asking 150. for it but It didn't come apart so I had to have a large truck to move it and at the time I didn't know anyone that had one. and I was also moving in a month and didn't want to have to move it twice. I figured there would be other opportunitys to get one later on. I shoud start looking again I do have an outside cage for them actually 2 of them but only 2 birds can go out at a time. with am aviary I would be able to let them all go out at one time they all get along ok so I'm lucky that way. I don't use an actual bird harrness but the one I use I like better because its so lightweight and easy to get on I got it at the pet store its called a lil critter harness its size small 6to10 inches its a figure 8 harness it only weighs 5gr and I find the birds don't mind wearing it. it only has 1 tiny clip so its easy to put on and it can be worn with the leash on the back or on the front I usually put it on the front when we go for walks becase she sits on my shoulder but the pictures I took she was walking around so I put the harness on the other way. I think most people use the aviator Harness but I live in Canada and everything that I order from the usa costs me double by the time I pay shipping, customs, tax, and the exchange rate my Adventure Pack ended up costing 269.00 by the time they added all the extra charges so I don't order anymore than I have to, I have tried the feather teather the sell those at the petstore here but there are to many buckles to do up i prefer the little one that I use.<br><br>Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2009/05/11 18:12

Adaya is still being hand fed she is not totaly weaned yet she is 13 weeks Old now. No I didn't hand raise Tyco I rescued tyco form a very abusive nasty place. Iam her forth owner and I got her when she was 4 yrs okd so you can imagine the work it took to get her to where she is. She such a nice bird now. and I love her so much. my avatar shows both my birds from about a week ago. you can see it better if you go to my profile. You should get a harness for your baby and start putting it on him when you go visit the sooner the better. I start Adaya at about 9 weeks and now she nows when I get the harness out its time to got outside. she is so good about it.

My birds love chicken and beef but I always make sure that the meat they eat is well cooked I love my beef cooked med to medrare but I alway slice a little off for the birds and cook it a bit longer it doesn't take much and they don't seem to mind as long as they get some. Tyco seems to like it most out of all my birds bit I only give them a piece the size of a teaspoon at most and only once or twice a month. Its sort of a magor treat. Tyco will ask for chickin when she knows I cooking chicken she goes on and on about how yummt it is and she want some its yummy for my tummy she say chicken good.

No Adaya wasn't weaned when I got her and still is on about 1/2 feeding a day. more for comfort than really wanting or needing it she will take about 20to 30 cc at dinner time and thats about it. there are a ton of pictures of her as she was growing up I'll paste my favorite here she was smiling ans it was so cute she was about 7 weeks old I think.

Those first words are so speical and it doesn't seem to matter how old they are when they learn new word they are just as special My Amazon said see you later mom byebye and I have never ever heard her say that before I just about fell over it made my whole day.
-
I tried to take Tyco out in the adventure pack today but there was no way she was going in that cage she spread her wing and grabed the bars and that was that I tried twice and said fine mabie text time so I let her watch while I put Fergie my Amazon in it and I walked out the door with Adaya on her harrness and Fergie in the back pack we went for a very nice walk the whole trailer court is so fragrent with lilac bushes in bloom in every yard. I walked up to one that was exceptionatly large and it spooked Adaya for a minute to have this big flower in front of her and she flew off my shoulder you have no idea how happy I was that she was wearing her harness it didn't take her long to settle back down on my shoulder and start grinding her beak she certinally does love her walks and as soon as I grab the harness she knows what time it is and i have no problems putting it on her now taking it off thats another story I think she would keep it on all day if it means going out to see whats happening outside. My neighboursmust think I'm out of my mind. some point some smile and some stop to talk Its not often you see someone walking their birds I guess.

I have 2 and I'm loving every minute of it I couldn't give them up if I tried the are the best but I didn't get them at the same time either. I think I if I did Tyco would not be the bird she is today she is awesome she likes everybody. my daughter teachhes her new games and Tyco so looks forward to seeing her becaus she has moved out now and when she comes Tyco gets so excited. she's definatly my bird I can give her scritches and she only steos up for me but I'm not the only person she likes. she is 6yrs old now and a rescue. I just bought a baby shes 13 weeks old now and the sweetest most cuddlyest sweetheart I've had her for 8 weeks now and my Tyco has taken the big sister roll with her its awesome the way they play the baby even stands on Tycos head and Tyco doesn't mind a bit. They are both congo's though I really wanted a Tag but I glad I got another congo I don't think Tyco would have excepted a Tag like she has a Congo she really likes this baby. so the fun has definatly started. I would wait and see what happens with the bird you have now before rushing out to get another in a couple years the bird may change his mind and decide he likes you best you don't now at this age whats going to happen.

How old is to old these birds live 50to 60 years so even 15 to 20 year old bird is still quite young and will still want to play sometimes and will definatly want to come and sit with you as long as the bird has been in a home and raised with lots of love and companionship it doesn't matter how old he is.
