  1. Thanks Judy, I think I am finally getting the jitters. It really does help to know there are so many people here who have in depth experience to guide and advise. I wish I had that when I got Java. If you think of anything I should ask the vet or if I need to make any more preparations, please feel free to make suggestions.
  2. Okay, it is finally becoming a reality. Juno has his first vet visit scheduled for the week he arrives. It seems kind of rough to have bloodwork and all before he gets to know me. The vet recommends gram stain, cultures, cbc and a blood panel. I understand the need to have a baseline workup so I am overcoming my urge to just keep him at home to myself. Better to keep Java safe to with our new addition coming in. I am beginning to feel the nervousness of wondering if I know what I am getting into but I am totally committed.
  3. Chris, I hope you are feeling better physically from your illness. When our immunities are down it is a lot harder to handle the emotional stresses in our own lives. Taking in an older grey with baggage is a hard and worthy road. Three months may feel like an eternity when you are trying so hard to help Talula. Give yourself room to feel sad for her anxiety when she plucks, but don't take it personally. Love her for her personality... that's what I tell my husband all the time when he calls me a character. LOL Keep your chin up, we are here for your support just like you are here for us.<br><br>Post edited by: katana600, at: 2009/10/27 03:59
  4. Isn't Darius lucky to have an ardent admirer? He probably looks at her like the pesky little tag-along sister. They are both lucky to have a happy home with you.
  5. This is a video I want to see!! Thanks for sharing, it must be a lot of fun at your house.
  6. Since reading this forum I have been directed to some really helpful information. My three year old poicephalus hen Java speaks infrequently, but very clearly with certain phrases. I have noticed some distinct repeated chatter that I could not understand. Two weeks ago, I bought a digital recorder. There was one phrase in particular I was trying to decipher. When I put it on slow speed playback, I was astonished to hear "I WANT OUT". The aha moment. It is always when I am cooking so I thought it was food related. LOL. Now when she says it, I repeat it gleefully and if I can, I let her right out. In just two times of getting her message through, she refined the jumble so now it is plain for all to hear.
  7. Chris, First, sorry that Talula is plucking. Two steps forward one step back. She may like you more than you can see and you went to bed early the unpredictability was a stress to her a bit too. From reading your posts I have seen you to be caring and conscientious. What is done is done and going forward you can talk to her and tell her what you are doing and let her get back to being able to predict pleasant interactions with both of you. Hang in there, it will take some time but will turn around again.
  8. Thanks Dan you are always such a big help. I have had Juno's cage set up for four months and have been training Java to stay off. I am setting up separate play areas and have read enough on this forum to let her out first. I am putting clear acrylic on the top of both cages and not creating play areas near either cage so they both have safety zones. With time and patience my best hope is peaceful coexistance. I will be vigilant and careful about introductions and take little baby steps. Thanks again for your insights.
  9. Yahoo on increasing your toy collection! Too bad we couldn't have had a web cam on you so all of us could watch... and call your cell phone to ask you to get one of each. Welcome Nilah and congratulations on learning how to pick the best home and to get there as fast as you could.
  10. Dan, Thanks to your videos watching Jake and Dayo will give me the encouragement I needed to keep both my birds flighted. I have had small anxious moments wondering if I am asking for trouble between the birds. Jake is much faster and agile and they seem to have an understanding. Did you guide them in the beginning or did they develop this relationship with no intercession?
  11. It is always a pleasure to sign on and find good news. This is the best news today, thanks for keeping us in mind so we can celebrate with you.
  12. Ooooh, sorry about that bite Dave, it looks like it hurt a little. Considering the circumstances it is forgiveable. Now you, Gonzo and Camilla deserve a vacation and an award. Thank you so much for sharing this process.
  13. Wow, she is brilliant and gorgeous. How lucky you are to have this beauty in your home every day.
  14. I thought it was a big joke about Tiggs on the boat and nearly hurt myself laughing when I actually saw it for myself! Bernie, don't you ever change, all your babes love you! But come on with the breaking of the parts to your boat. I did not see the name on the flag, but maybe Tiggs distracted me. I'm telling you, if you don't name it and have a ceremony, she'll jinx you.
  15. This is all good advice well received. Thanks to all of you for your insight and the article to back up what Dave and others have learned from their own experience. It is always easier to prevent this kind of attachment than to remedy it once it has a strong hold. Thanks everybody.
  16. That is very in-depth and informative. Thanks for the link.
  17. It really isn't that hard, just time consuming to wrap the string. I have to do something to pass the waiting time for Juno. Time will tell if it holds up to a CAG, I will let you all know though.
  18. A blanket party is where you toss a blanket over a rogue to subdue him and so he doesn't see who is knocking his stuffin' out.
  19. I think someone here posted pictures and instructions to make this thing, maybe called an orbit? The only thing I changed was to use jute instead of the sisal at Dave's suggestion. The inside is inexpensive sprinkler system tubing at ten dollars for a hundred feet. I took the pieces to the garage and used a solder tool to burn a hole at each end of the twelve pieces of tubing and tied the jute inside to help it hold tight. The seed catcher on the bottom came from a Wild Bird Center store and keeps our little dogs from getting wood pieces or almond shells after we had an expensive vet visit from one of them having an obstruction, he nearly died. This keeps the floor from getting messy too. The picture makes the ceiling fixtures look deceptively close, it is at least two feet away and we have a clear plastic squirrel baffle at the end so the bird can not get to the frame around the doorway.
  20. Awww, she is something special. A pox and a whipping to that young man! Good for you to bring her home to a loving place.
  21. I am so sorry to hear this Tina. That has to be just awful for all of you. What kind of parrots were they?
  22. Awww Mocha is adorable. He must trust you to be able to have gotten the harness on him. He really is twisting it up to show it he is the boss. It makes me wonder, is he considered a softbill? Does he have the ability to give a hard bite?
  23. Thanks Judy, you helped me out again. Now back to Bernie's unkicked cat. We can help Tiggs throw Bernie a blanket party.

  25. Does anyone else think Bernie has "cat scratch fever"?
