Hi, Maggie here...#1: No sunflower seeds. It makes them nervous and skittish. What we fed and feed ours is, believe it or not, from Walmart, the Universal Blend - Medium to Large Hookbill Parrots. (We take out the few sunflower seeds) Daily, they also get a variety of cooked brown rice, cooked Orzo pasta, (all cold or just warmed to room temp), chopped green leafy veggies (sometimes I hang large leaves in the cage so they can forage), chopped broccoli, sugar snap peas, cooked carrots, hard-boiled egg once a week with shell, very little fruit since Cockatiels are not fruit eaters in the wild, just a general selection of assorted veggies (whatever the others have for the day). No Fruit pellets, they are seed eaters and ours will eat a little leftover of the Nut Blend pellets by ZuPreem. Now, when you get your Macaw, or Caique, I have recipes for you...LOL...

They like stuff with beads and ropes, not much wood and you should keep around three toys for each 'Tiel and rotate them every three weeks. This is what we do and not necessarily the norm or a standard/must do. Papa

Hi Murfchck! A very important part of a Macaw's diet which is a high-fat content diet, is macadamia nuts and palm nuts. They can be Red palm nuts, Queen palm nuts and others. Give them a lot of beta-carotene (carrots, yellow veggies) besides your normal leafy green veggies. Patience, Patience, Patience...I will check around for a decent palm nut distributor. Give me a day or two...

They know what they like...lol

These little guys like fruit and fruit type pellets, wild caiques are used to eating nectar. You can try buying nectar mixes, usually sold for lorikeets or lories, or make your own. Try combining 5% dextrose wit 5% fructose, or cranberry juice, or any fruit juice. Serve this in the morning and throw away any leftovers by the end of the day. Never serve your caiques honey, which can contain clostridium botulinum (birds are particularly vulnerable to botulism). Other no-nos are coffee, chocolate, apple seeds, and peach pits.

Thanks Ray. We had a Latino 'Tiel named Diva, [she was a large show bird], and a white keet named Lace, they lived together till they passed on.....

This works, Dave recommended it for my pluckers..........

Thanks pikachu, this is true most of the time, but you need to watch for stress. With our rescue joe, we wanted to change his name to Jim [jim kirk] to go with our Spock, after quite a while Joe said one day "My names Joe, not Jim!" LOL
-
Agreed, Theres just not enough info on the net or in books about our Greys........
-
Sit back and relax, be natural. Remember who the flock leader is right now, and introduce the new flock to them first. Watch for a few days to see what happens. A lot of times Greys and Conure's get along, I would guess they will all keep to themselves. Some times, Sun's will try to aggravate larger parrots, conure's have no fear......

IRN not IRS!! The Indian Ringneck Parrot or Parakeet (Psittacula krameri manillensis - Bechstein, 1800) - is also sometimes referred to as Rose-ringed Parakeet or, simply, Ring-necked Parakeet. The Indian Ring-necked Parakeet originates from southern India. Its closest cousin - the African Ringneck Parakeet - is found in West Africa to Southern Sudan. The Indian Ringneck Parakeet is a medium-sized parrot that measures between 14 - 17 inches (36 - 43 cm) in length - about half of which are the long tail feathers alone. The wings are 6 - 7 inches (153 - 180 mm) long. They weigh between 4 - 5 oz (115 - 140 grams). These energetic parakeets love to fly and explore; and are very playful. They need lots of toys to keep them entertain. They particularly like chew toys. There is a general misconception that males are friendlier than females, but there is no real basis for this. They need a wide/tall cage due to their tail length, Beautiful Parrot with the distint Red Beak....
