My little thought about this baby is that it has gone to a loving, forever home. People all over want the "perfect specimen". This one has imperfections, so only a dedicated, loving parront (such as yourself) would consider taking this bird on for it's personality and not it's "beauty". Just means there's another one out there for you to "save". Just keep looking x

What if I smuggled you all a palm nut through the post! After all, you lot in the USA were kind enough to give us McDonalds.........

Excellent Jill - love it!! Karma to you!

I can't believe the moment is about to arrive! You must be besides yourself with excitement (I remember it very well)!! There's still time to change your mind......Well, I suppose if we haven't put you off up until now, then you're ready! Can't wait to see some photos

Lyn, we've noticed since Harvey was a baby that he prefers to eat on his stand - I got worried too that he wasn't touching his food, and to be honest there are plenty of times when I come in and I know that the veggies have just been flung about to make it look like he's had a feed. Harvey normally eats "properly" at about 8pm to 9pm - he seems to be a nocturnal eater. I weigh him regularly, he is 450g, so I'm not worried. As you say, she eats when you put her on her stand - so, there's nothing wrong with her, just prefers to eat at her favourite restaurant! She'll not starve - if she's hungry she'll eat it (just at the minute is choosing not to)!

Dave - I have just read something on your website that has made me laugh out loud (and I'm the only one in the office at 06.45am!! The bit where you tell us the magic of the construction of a webcam to the babies! DON'T GIVE US ANY IDEAS!!! Actually - when I first got Harvey I DID contemplate this! My husband soon slapped me out of it (not literally, as I would be posting this from my prison cell after comitting murder)!!!

I had to share this - who said parrots were clever? http://www.parrotpassionsuk.com/parrottails/pippaseastereggs.htm ** REMEMBER - NEVER FEED CHOCOLATE TO YOUR PARROT **
-
When I first brought Harvey home he HAD to eat his pellets, I WAS shoving them down his throat because PARROTS ATE PELLETS! One year on and he still hardly eats any pellets - and guess what - yip, he's alive, fine and healthy, with a beautiful feather coat and bright sparkly eyes. I put this down to the fact that he eats his fruit, veggies and seed - because when he was a baby back in Africa he couldn't reach the pellet tree - so didn't become accustomed to them. I'm totally changing my ideas about pellets now though - I had a cockatiel that lived on seed alone - wouldn't eat anything else (perhaps a bit apple here and there - but that was it) and 17½ years later he crossed rainbow bridge - not a pellet passed his beak!
-
I agree totally with the others - he is looking much brighter in his eyes and everything! Great news Spock - don't let us down!!!!

You give me hope Jen! Harvey's a semi-mute and you seemed to be the only person on this forum with a grey of a certain age which didn't say anything! So, so sorry to hear about Sparky - it is so heart wrenching to lose a member of the family - but I bet he gave you 16 years of pure pleasure and laughs along the way. Keep us updated on Sadie - can't wait to hear some more

Oh, cheap thrills! What a joy! That's the good thing with a flighted bird, they stumble, they fall - but they never hit the floor!! Paco's day will come though Get some photos!!!

I have it in my mind (be it true or not) that UV lighting would be expensive to run. Fuel prices here in the UK are at an all time high and therefore restricting my electricity consumption to the minimum is always at the forefront of my mind. It doesn't seem that UV lighting is so popular here in the UK - and that supplementation is brokered, perhaps due to cost?

You all sound like you are settling into life together so well! Kopi sounds an absolute joy ~ and I'm sure you are enjoying every minute of it! Harvey still does eat his palm oil off a spoon - it's actually safer for my cream carpet too!!! Lovely photos of Kopi too - such a sweetie

 What's she like! Oh I wish for that day.....! Then again, for the amount of times that Harvey is naughty he will become a cage-bound parrot! If he doesn't stop biting me, I might take myself off to his cage! Thanks for the update - you fill me with hope

Goodness - you've read my mind! I was just about to post about this!! Harvey gets supplements - Calcivet and Daily Essentials 3. I was advised by my breeder to use both of these (couple of times a week). I don't have full spectrum lighting, and wasn't considering getting it either as I'd been advised to give the supplements to help with the calcium and D3 insufficiencies suffered by greys in captivity. Do you think it's just because I live in the grim UK that these are advised then? PS. Edited to add that I still feed Harvey all of the good leafy veg etc too - the supplements aren't there as a substitute

Post edited by: JillyBeanz, at: 2010/03/30 20:38

Ah, he is gorgeous Jess - just needs a little sweater knitting and Bob's your uncle! They are such pretty little things ~ gorgeous little faces. I take it that's another of the Ark Noah?

I read with interest the comments by Dan and Jill. My breeder openly advertises on his advice pages that we use both Calcivet and Daily Essentials 3 to supplement their feeding regime. I was advised to use these, by my breeder and have done since I brought Harvey home. My question here is - do you think this is a UK thing - as we don't receive enough natural sunlight to supply the D3 needed? I must add - it's very small the additions and only a couple of times a week.

jessdecutie18 wrote: You can't hand feed a parrot in the UK Jess. It is against the law (proper law!) to sell an unweaned bird! So - I'm with you in that a five month old parrot (all 20 weeks of it) is a baby

"Amazon of the Week"3/29/10,And the Winner is?
JillyBeanz replied to Jayd's topic in Cricket's Amazon Room
Whilst I thank you for the kind accolade - I think this is Janet's prize! I had a great time researching the Cuban Amazon (after seeing it whilst there - although didn't take much notice as I wasn't interested back then ~ sorry Amazon population)! Thanks again for giving us the chance to put something together for you all -
Hey Debbie - where did she learn her moves!!!! I bet she was the talk of the bar! Probably better the entertainment they had planned that night I bet! Dee's right - a pin up poster grey would do him just fine!

Luckily Harvey will sit on his shower perch for me to "wet" him. Obviously his wing feathers are waterproof, but I try and soak them as much as I can by "going against the grain". I aim for his chest and under wings , where the feathers are softer, and less waterproof, also his little bum and on his back. The mister is another thing though! I have to put him in his cage as he takes one look at the spray bottle and he's off!! He does one hundred laps of the house, given the chance!

Pep - I'm sorry to question you - but why are you looking for a breeder if you have an extremely young baby grey that your friend is selling? Can't you, or whoever is after this Carl chap, take the five month old grey? It's hardly a pensioner! It's a little baby!

Post edited by: JillyBeanz, at: 2010/03/29 19:21

 Hey! Those Red Kites have just been reintroduced a couple of years ago round here - they are thriving and your bully of a parrot comes and chops their noses off!! What fab pictures Lyn - karma to you for my evening giggle

He's not a member here - I have seen him talked about on other forums (UK based) though. Why don't you get a grey from John in Bedlington again?
