  1. That very good advice a sick bird needs to be kept in a very warm enviroment about 80 degrees farenhight if you can cover 3 sides of his cage and put a heat sorce like a light or heating pad under the grate this will help keep the heat in so the bird stay warm and it will also help keep him quiet and relaxed. Its good you are taking him to the vet tomorrow.
  2. I also am looking forward to hearing more about you and your experiance with birds. I found your post interesting. I rescued a Grey about 1 1/2 years ago. And she has grown to be a very happy confident bird due to tons of love and teaching she still has a ways to go but she has trully come a very long way since I brought her home. Do you have an African Grey? If so why don't you tell us about him/her I would love to hear about her/him things like her/his name how old your bird is how long have you had your bird and mabie if possible a picture or two
  3. There is no age to start showers but I would start slow with a fine mist above her head so that the water falls gently like a summer rain and then after she get used to it you can gradually put her in the shower. You also could try a shallow pan on top of her cage also mabie put a couple toys in the water to intice her.
  4. There are many toys that encourage forageing like Puzzle toys You can also do thing like taking small margerine cups and and string 4or5 together and place a treat or a nut in each one. and in order to get the treat they have to take the lids off the cups you may have to show your grey the first time how but they learn quickly if they know you put a treat in each one you can also hide little cardboard boxes like raisen boxes in his cage with a treat inside. as your Grey starts to get the hang of it you can start buying toys that he has to push a button or turn a key or push a lever. you can start slow and then every payday buy him something a little more challenging. you can also use paper towel rolls and put food in them and roll the end and put a cloths pin on them to keep to make it a little harder don't use the clothes pin with the spring in them I use the all wooden ones Tyco likes to chew them to peices after she finishes eating. This is the kind of clothes pin I'm talking about. <br><br>Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2009/02/16 05:38
  5. I have found that if I put a new toy close to Tycos cage. where she can access it but not touching her cage she get used to it within a day or two I continue to tell her that its a toy and show her that its safe to play with. I have done this ever since I got her and now she isn't afraid of anything new as long as I tell her its for her and it a toy and it lots of fun. I have never let her give in to fear and she is a very brave confident Grey now. I will usually put anything new up while she is in bed that way when she wakes up it there for her to see.<br><br>Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2009/02/16 07:26
  6. I wish Tyco was scared of new things. I guess I taught her to well because since I've had her she is a very confident bird and not afraid of anything.
  7. Judy thays blood on my finger from the bird I was holding. I had just rescued him a day or 2 before and the only way to tame a teil is to take the bites and don't back down for anything now that bird is the biggest sweet heart he talks up a storm and just loves tobe cuddled but at first that was not the case it didn't take to many bites but he did draw blood a couple timesLOL
  8. That was so cute she really didn't want to go to bed did she I wish Tyco was more like that. My Amazon is my velcro bird if she had her way she would be snuggled up to 24/7 Thanks for sharing. Makes my want a baby Grey
  9. I'm sorry to here about your poor baby. I'm sure she'll be fine as long as you rinced her off really well under her wings and everywhere. as long as she didn't swallow to much water I'm sure she will be fine keep an eye out on her for awhile if she seems to have any problems I'm sure there is a emergency vet available in your area somewhere.
  10. Gizmo is coming along very nicely he come out of his cage on his own now. He just love to play if I walk by his cage without stopping you will hear him say hey commere come and play with me. He's a little nippy right now because he's molting and has a ton of pin feathers everywhere. I try to help him by giving him lot of baths and I would love to be able to pinch off the caratin but he won't allow my to give him any scritches at all right now. I guess all the pin feathers are just to irratating and sore. His favorite game is tug o war with a rolled up peice of news paper or a peice of rope. he just love to shread and news paper and rope are the things he likes to shread. He's getting better at eating different things now. I got him to eat sweet potatos and broccoli and even got him to eat a couple of peas the other day. I hope he gets over this molt quickly I can't pick him up right now because he won't let me get close enough. Before this molt started he was stepping up and comeing with me everyday but now he just won't. Any ideas beside lots of baths that will help would be greatly appreciated. I guess nature has to take its course I just wish I could have settled him down a bit more before it started. Fergie must have read my mind while I was talking about giving Gizmo lots of baths because she just did a nose dive into her water dish she's haveing a great time splashing around. I wish Gizmo would give himself a bath but he doesn't seem to know how. I have arthritis in my fingers and to pump the spray bottle for any length of time makes my fingers cramp up. so I have to change hand three or four times while bathing him. Tyco and Fergie like the shower but I haven't tryed Gizmo in the shower yet because he won't allow me to pick him up now that he's molting. After this molt I'm going to introduce him to the shower so I don't have to have sore hands for hours and hours. I would add a new picture but he looks a bit shabby due to the molt so as soon as he finishes I wll take a picture so you can all see how trully wonderful and healthy he is since he's been here. Oh I almost forgot to mention him and Fergie have become friends she will sit on the fridge which is 5 ft away from his cage and they will talk back and forth for hours its really quite sweet.
  11. Tyco is a quiet bird in comparance to my conure,Amazon, and Macaw she talks lots but she talks not loudly its about the same volume as I or any body talks. she never screams her sound effects are a little louder than her talking voice but not to the point where they are deafening. My Amazon on the other hand can get quite loud and when she gets started the dogs start howling and the other birs start chirpping that when you would swear someone moved the house into the Jungles of africa. its enough to drive anyone around the bend. thank goodness they all listen when I tell them to be quiet. Fergie hates it when I put the dogs outside when they are haveing their little jam sessions she just loves to get them all going. She is such a little instagater.
  12. I totally agree those birds need to be seperated if a cockatoo feels he doesn't have enough space he may kill your other bird they have been known to kill their own mate
  13. Happy hatchday Keeko I hope your mommy gets you everything you've ever wanted.
  14. Tyco is a very heavy bird and her nails where so sharpe she would put deep holes in my arm everytime I picked her up. I took her to my vet and had her nails dremeled just enough so they didn't cut my arm and that was 6 months ago and haven't had any problems like that ever since. I must say though it too about a week for her to get used to her nails not being sharp and hed a few problems with holding on but she soon learned how todo it and now everything is great.
  15. Sounds to me like they could careles about the animals they sell they are only in it for the money. They probubly get their birds from a bird mill your lucky that bird only had a bacterial infection and a yeast infection it could have been much worse and mabie even could have infected your Grey. Thank goodness you took the bird back who knows what kind of health problems it may have as it gets older. Coming from a situation that doesn't have the birds best intrest at heart. Hopefully nobody will buy their birds and they will evenually have to close the store permanently. We can only hope.
  16. Your Teils are very pretty. I have 2 teils also my male is a pearlpiedand my female is a whitefaced pearl. I just love them them are such social little birds. Do any of your teils talk my male talks up a storm. Heres some pics to show you I don't get to show them off very much.
  17. Seventeen Is fairly old for a cockateil but I had one years ago that lived til it was 25 years old. Mabie she just has an eye infection or mabie she poked it and it scratched. I really think that she should see a vet just to make sure she is ok.
  18. Mabie try you should buy a cuddle bone and scrape some of it over her food. also broccoli and leafy greens are high in calcium. grapes have magnizium which is good to help matabolize the calcium other soft food like mashed sweet potato mixed with peas and cooked broccoli will also help her. She needs to eat really well right now while her body is produceing eggs. my birds prefer scrambled eggs more than any other kind I mix in a little plain yougart instead of milk and they gobble them down.
  19. I have a GCC that lays down inside his happy hut everynight to sleep. its very cute you can see his little feet sticking out one end and he stretches right out and goes to sleep.I must say that a very sweet little guy you have there.
  20. I had a cockatoo for awhile they are very sweet and cuddly but the do scream if they aren't on you constantly. and the one I had loved me allot but would litterly attack anyone else. I have a daughter and everytime she came into the diningroom where the bird was the bird would attack her and take chunks out of her arms. I also have other birds and he would also try to attack them if he got the chance. I couldn't keep him because of the danger he was putting my family members in. I would stick to a African Grey if I where you they are much more emotionally stable.
  21. beautiful Tag I also say that you have a little girl birdie.
  22. oh yes I'm sure that what eventually got Tyco wanting scritches. She would watch all the other birds gettin affection and love she would stare intently when I was petting them and one night she put her head down so I could scratch her head. It was a huge step and ever since then our relationship has grown by leaps and bounds.
  23. Why don't you talk to the owners mabie they will take payments or come down in price if they know he's going to a very good home. I would try anyway if you really want him. You never know.
  24. What kind of Insurance Medical Insurance. Life Insurance I don't understand. I can see medical Insurance because the bills can get quite high if your bird gets sick. Thats the only Insurance that I would concider.
