  1. Thanks to all for the input, I have not given my bird any of it and I certainly won't now. I did speak with my vet today and she does not recommend it either. He has had a complete blood panel done and physically, he is fine. We have tried everything possible over the years, including pluck no more, didn't help. We are now using the sock buddy and he is growing feathers, but I feel like if we stop he will probably start plucking the feathers out again. But, at least he is warm, he is such a sweetie and his plucking does not change the way we feel about him. I just heard about this and thought I would ask you guys, guess I should have asked the vet first.
  2. Thanks Dave, I realize there are no vets on this forum - was just asking if anyone had ever used it for their birds. I certainly had no intentions of trying to cause any problems. I do have an Avian Vet and will call tomorrow and ask about it and post.
  3. Just wondering if anyone has used St. John's Wort in their birds water to help with feather plucking. Someone told me about it for a plucking Eclectus that they have and it has helped temendously. I also have a male Eclectus that was plucking when we got him (about 5 years ago) and he continues to. We now are putting "sock buddies" on him and that is helping, since he tears up the sweater instead of his feathers. Wanted to know your thoughts on the St. John's Wort, if it is safe. Thanks

    Paint

Walls is what I was talking about - I have purchased a bird store and all of the walls and trim need to be painted. I was thinking that somewhere I had read about a paint that had no odor and would be safe to use around the birds. It is no way I can move the birds out. If there is no safe paint, then the walls will just have to stay the way they are. It has been a bird store for the last two years and we just took over as the new owners this past Wednesday. Thanks for your help!

Does anyone know of any "bird safe" paint? Thanks
  8. I am certainly no expert, but all I can say is Patience, Patience, Patience. I never realized how long it would take for them to accept different things, as well as people! Try sitting by the cage with a book that has a lot of pictures and colors and read to him. Maybe offer a peanut through the cage and see if he will take it. Talk to him softly, sing and whistle so he can see how happy you are to have him there. Plenty of toys to keep him busy and just don't try to rush things. He will come around, but not tomorrow - patience I think is the key. Best of luck to you and please keep us posted on the progress.

    New Store

Wanted to share with you all that my friend and I have purchased an bird store in Williamsburg, VA. Barbara Hobbs has owned this store for 20+ years and has decided to retire. We will take it over May 15 and we are so excited. We plan to fully stock this store with all bird supplies, so anyone in the area come and check it out! The store is called "The Feathered Nest" and located at 239 Penniman Drive. We also plan in the future to go on-line, will let you all know when that happens.
  13. I shower with my Double Yellow Head, we have had her since she was a baby and she loves it. RayP, mine does the same thing, gets so excited and talks and whistles - so funny! Super cute when soaked to the skin! LOL
  14. We are on city water here in VA. We don't drink from the tap, but have 2 filters in our refrigerator, one in the line and the other in the frig. I was giving them this for a long time, had no problems but I know city water has chlorine and that worried me. Thanks for all of the replies!
  15. I have been giving my birds only distilled water for about a year now, thinking it was the best water I could give them. I just read that distilled water has a lot of acid. What kind of water does everyone give their fids? I don't buy it, but have a distiller.
