This is very true When I fist got Tyco My Green cheeked Conure was very jealous and wwas always trying to start something with Tyco. I hadn't had Tyco 1 week when and Sprout was in his cage and trying to get up in Tyco's face from inside his cage Tyco reach through the bars of the cage and bit Sprouts beak off. I hand fed him for 7 month before his beak had grown back enough for him to eat on his own again. Please try to keep them separated believe me its not pretty all the thing that could happen Today one of my cockateils flew on to Tycos cage I was not in the room at the time. Tyco took a bite out of her side just above her left leg. she didn't make a sound and I didn't even know it happened until I picked her up to but her back into her cage. It looks very deep and I going to take her to the vet in the morning if she makes it through the night. All the vet offices are closed right now. I cleaned up the wound and put her in a hospital cage with a heating pad she doesn't seem to be in shock she still perching on one foot and isn't puffed up or anything but the wound is deep so I'm ure she is going to need some antibiotics at least to get her healed up with out getting an infection. I'm just so upset about this it always seems these things happen at the worst possible time

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/12/30 03:19

AG are very intellagent mabie he realized that you where going to give up on him and decided he better show you just how much he loves you and doesn't want to go anywhere. I hope things continue to Improve because the longer you keep him the harder it will be for him to adapt to a new home. Please make your mind up quickly if you are going to rehome him. Its will be best for since he is still very young.

I raised 5 children and I always had birds in my home. I couldn't imagine life without them. When I was growing up and still living at home my mom always had birds in our home. Alot of people have cats and dogs we did also but we always had birds too. and those birds where just as much part of the famaly as any other pet. you may be suprised how easily your bird will adapt to a new member of the flock I wouldn't worry to much it only take a hour of quility time everyday with your Grey you have another 23 hours to spend with your child.

I'm so sorry for your loss reading this has given my a huge lump in my throat and the tears are streaming down my face. I know what its like to lose a good friend. At least now she is out of pain and flying free over rainbow bridge where you will see her again one day my prayers are with you.

EXCELENT!! I enjoyed your Blog very much and will be reading all new additions to it. You have hit home I feel so much like you do now that my children have all grown up. My birds give me something to nurture and watch grow into beautiful beings They are so intelegent and give so much love and meaning to my life. I'm sure without them I also would be quite lonley. -
I had Tycos removed when I got her she was constantly biting and pulling at it and her leg was getting raw because of it My vet had a tool to cut it with and It only took a couple seconds they didn't put her under anestetic todo it. I think that if they even sugested putting her to sleep for such a simple thing like cutting off a leg band I would look for another vet obviously that vet isn't very good at handleing birds if he puts them to sleep. That would make me lose all confidence with him/her

That looks like something Tyco would love she just love foot toys and You can build so many differnt things with them she wouldn't get board everyday she would have a new Toy to play with. I'll have to go shopping this week now that everything is marked down to half price I'll be able to buy her a huge set of them

I had a male cocateil that grew up in the same room as Tyco and that little bird thought he was an African Grey he learned every trick and how to talk from Tyco It was the cutests thing you ever seen watching this little cockateil do everything and say everything that an african Grey could do.

I wouldn't worry about the feathers not growing back.Tyco chewed all her flight feathers on her left wing for yhe first 4 years of her life due to a bad clip when she was a baby. When I got her I had her wings clipped properly and now she has stoped chewing and has all her feathers on both her her wings back.

Shanti is a beautiful Grey and they don't all look alike some have longer necks others have dark grey feathers some are silver some have wider heads, some are small some are large . thats like saying we all look alike we all have the same features but we all look different and its the same with birds. I love to look at other peoples birds and see if I can see the differences in their apperance.

I really think thats what has to be done to let the birds all know that the new bird is not a threat I think that people have more problems when they start separating them and only letting them out at separate times it make the birds feel lie there must be somthing wrong and so when they do get out together they attack because they have been kept segragated for so long. Like I said before all my birds are flighted and all have out time from 8am till 8pm except for the nights I have to go to work then they have to go in their cages at 4:30pm instead of 8pm but I only work 2 or 3 days a week so they are not in their cages very much unless they choose to be in them. It so important to scocailize your birds with each other to me its just as improtant as socializing them with all the people in the household there really should be no difference.

There is no way I could do those kinds of things with Tyco, Now Fergie my amazon thats a different story I rough house with her all the time and she loves to play rough I roll her over onto her back and tickle her tummy or I roll her over and over to her its just a whole lot of fun. with Tyco there is no way she would even allow me to anything like that. I keep hopeing that if she watches Fergie and I haveing fun she may someday want to join in but so far she just watches us with great intreast. Its fun to be able to handle them anyway you want but I agree with the others that it takes a very speicial bond. I can also rough house with Sprout my Green Cheeked Conure but thos are the only 2 birds that I have that will allow it. Mabie one day I'll have that kind of relationship with Tyco,Gizmo, and Raja you never know. I think I'll be able to handle Raja like that pretty soon because he will allow me to lay him on his back without him holding on to anything and I can pet him all over but he's such a genle sweet bird I don't think he has a mean bone in his intire body. Because of his personality he might not enjoy being tossed around but you never know.

I commend you for realizing early that you are not up for the task of raising a Grey they trully are a huge responsibility and are not for the faint of heart Ialso would take him in a heart beat but I too live in Canada and Its just not easy to bring birds accross the border. I do hope that you find a forever home very soon. I also was thinking about that gentleman that posted a few weeks ago that was looking into a Companion Grey he really seemed to have a good understanding of what owning a Grey intailed hopefully he will read this thread and get in touch with you. I wish you and yours all the best in the new year and Merry Christmas to you

That is so great I love that when I can have two or three of my birds at a time sitting on me and socializing it sounds like they are excepting each other as flock members nicely Your doing a great job of helping them to do that. Thats kinda what I do also to get all my birds to get along I really think its important for them to understand that there is no need to be jealous that I still love them just as much as before but have enough love to share between all of the other birds as well I often have them sitting together with me just for that reason I'm sure thats why all my birds get along so well together and don't ever get aggresive towards each other they have all learn that nobodys a threat to them in anyway.

Good for you Marla the more love & patient you give George the more he will respond with the same in return open your heart as much as you can and let him see all the love you have for him he will parrot can sence what you are feeling. So0 when you are working with him do it with as much love as possible and you will see thing start to change it may be slow in comeing but it will happen. It took months before Tyco allowed me to touch her feathers in anyway without trying to bite me. Even when she did start to allow it it as a slow process of ok you can touch my head for 1 second no longer and every day that time got a little longer, now she love me to give her scritches and pets but it only happened with love and patients. I have never even considered taking her food from her she has access to food 24/7 and always will have.

I can do it because my birds are a flock they except each other as members of the same flock so they don't even try to hurt each other. The respect each other personal space. None of my birds will go to another birds cage unless they are friends with that bird so theres never any confrontations between the little birds and the big birds. I don't know how it happened really I just know that none of my birds will hurt each other they are all one family.

I've been doing that for years I love to watch the wild birds come into my yard and enjoy all the scraps that my birds leave behind. I always have so much of it with birds. I just save it up and put it out for the birds everyday The Steller jays just love the left over parrot food and the smaller song birds prefer the conure and Cockateils food so I get a large variaty of different birds in my yard. I love to watch them all.

Thats great that you had him Dna tested Mabie thats why him and Gizmo are so much alike mabie its the way male Severe Macaws are. I also glad that Tanner seems to like Maxi I'm finding the same thing with Gizmo he doesn't seem to mind the other birds in the house at all. I had him my Amazon and my Indian ringneck all spending time with me on my bed the other day and all of them where fine together. It really suprises me sometimes that my birds have become an actual flock and all seem to except and respect each other's place. They may not all be friends but they don't hurt each other either and thats all that important I think.

I have 7 birds 4 of them small birds and I have no problem with them what so ever. I open all their cages at 8am and put them all to bed at 8pm all my birds are fully flighted. I took about a month mabie 2 for all of them to except each other as flock members and respect each others personal space. and one of those birds is a Amazon and she is the very best with all the birds she is very out going and friendly with them all. As long as you don't make a big deal about eventually all the birds wil except one another. There may be some jealousy at first but as time goes by as long as you keep the pecling order all the birds will learn their place within the flock.
