It sounds to me like he wants attention and is doing the only thing he knows that will get him that attention. Mabie spend some time teaching him some new tricks or play a game of catch with a small ball or something. He's sounds like he's bored and needs somthing new to occupy his time.

Help - Jenna is "barbering" her feathers (long)
Tycos_mom replied to Raposa's topic in The GREY Lounge
Tyco used to barber her left side flight feathers to the point where she was very off balance and would fall constantly on her keel really hard. I was terrified she was going to break her keel bone. This was just after I got her she was 4 years old. The person who had her said that it was a birth defect and that she never had flight feathers on her left hand side. Well I took her to the vet and the vet said that she never had them because she was chewing them off as soon as they started to grow. I still to this day don't know why but I assume it was due to a bad clip as a baby she was never permitted to fledge. I had my vet clip her so that both sides match so at least she was balanced and wouldn't hurt herself from falling all the time. After that clip Tyco has stopped barbering her feathers she is fully flighted now and is just starting to learn how to fly she crash lands allot but she's trying. She is 6 years old now and I think its going to take a little longer to learn to fly now than it would have if they had let her learn as a baby. I'm so proud of her that she finally stop barbering. I think once you figure out what is causeing the problem it will solve it self just like it did for Tyco its just figuring out what it is. Your doing everything you can and I'm sure that it will all work out in the end just keep trying the things you think will help I think that covering her cage at night might help. mabie the light that shines on her for awhile bothers her. Also the humidifyer sounds like a great Idea. -
In our house Tyco has definatly chosen me as her favorite. My 21 year old daughter is also very loved by Tyco when she walks in Tyco gets so excited and just begs for attention from her. she loves to her as a play mate. My daughter has taught her many different games so now even tough I am Tycos favorite person and she allow pets and will step up on only me she also loves my daughter and has a different kind of relationship with her. Don't give up yet greys can love more than just one person

So do you know when you will be able to take her home? I'm so excited for you and I love her name.

I also would love to see some pics. when you get back home you may have to get yourself an Amazon so your Pax doesn't get lonley.

I think that somthing new like a big red teddybear or somthing like that and sit it next to where he chews. it will scare him off for awhile. or you could try moveing the cabnet to a different location. I wouldn't move his cage though it may cause to much stress.

He is such a little love bug your so lucky to have such a lovey little guy your parents did a good job taking care of him. he's seems very happy to be back home where he belongs.

I cover my birds at night. I do this so they can sleep I have terrible insomnia and I'm up and down all night long If I didn''t cover them the poor baby's wouldn't get any sleep. When I got Gizmo he was scared of being cover at night so I had to go very slow to get him used to it. at first I just covered 3 sides of his cag and the gradually lowered the cover of the side a little every night. I still don't cover his whole cage just the top halfI leave a good 1 1/2 feet on the bottom of the cage so if he wants to look out he can. he is the only bird that isn't totaly covered.

I'm so sorry for your baby flying away You are in my prayers. Don't give up on him I'm sure he's out there trying hard to find his way back to you. if you have any vidios of him talking you may try turning them up loud around his cage he may hear them if he;s still in the area and respond.

I like the bathroom for training purposes when it comes to irds Dave is right about the hazards though. if you are going to use the bathroom you must take certain precations such as making sure the toilet lid is closed and covering the mirrors towel racks should be made so the bird can grip them should it choose to land on it the shower curtain should also be closed and on the outside of the tub. Put a cushion in the sink and cover the counter with a large heavy towel. The bathroom is normaly the smallest room in the house and thats why I prefer it for traing the bird cannot go far away from you in the bathroom. Also when I get a new bird I get the vet to give it a wing clip its the only clip my birds ever get but I do this so they can get used to the other birds without haveing them mabie landin on another birds cage and getting hrt and another bird getting hurt it just gives them a chance to get educated and to be accepted into the flock and traning the bird is much easier if they can't fly to far. It also gives me a chance to teach the birds about any danger such as windows and mirrors I take them around the house and show them that the mirrors and windows are solid. I get them to beak each window and mirrow and I do this everyday for the first month or so and them after that I do a refresher once a month just to make sure they remember I have a sun room in my home and it has 8 verylarge windows as well as a sliding glass door to go out to the sundeck. Not all birds are the same when it comes to training so I've found Grey are very sensitive and very intellegent you must first earn your birds trust before any real training can begin. That does not happen overnight it take patient and allot of genuine love and attention. if you are not genuine with your Grey your bird will know. You have to love your bird even after its bit you a hundred times your bird will know if you are getting discourage so you have to make sure you can feel only love for the bird when you are spending time with it. Sooner of later your bird will show you that its ready to start something new he will let you know when he finally trusts you.

I have a 2'x 3' mirror on a wall about 3or4 feet away from Tyco's cage she likes to watch me through the mirror she pretends she's not looking at me but I can see that she is when I look at the mirror. My Amazon is funny with the mirror she tries to see if there is a bird behind it. and she pecks at the bird in the mirror but I've never put a mirror in their cages I would be afraid it might get broken and they might cut themselve on it. What if something like that happened when I wasn't home. There is no way I would take that chance.

I also have a female grey and she's 6yrs old I don't think laying eggs is something you really have to worry about until they are around 10 yrs old at least and even then it rarely happens.
-
I usually make a carrot cake and add raisens and walnuts (no icing). and then some kind of expensive toy that I wouldn't normally buy for them like a cargo net. or a new playstand then I let them have there cake at the table on a real people plate and they get totally spoilt for the day sometimes its a nice day I even take them with me to buy their presant so they get an outing as well.

Try to act like nothings happened keep doing the things you've always done for him before this happened if he won't let you touch him then offer him treats sit beside his cage a distance away and read to him or just chat at him. he will soon reliese that your not the bad guy Greys take thing a little harder than other birds but hang in there with him and he will get over it in his own time
-
I hope she continues keeping the birds clean and its good to keep checking from what i've seen most of these places will keep things up for awhile and then as soon as they think no one is watching they revert back to there old ways.

a 7 month old baby is still very young esspecialy since she's a cag as they mature slower than a Tag I would say go for it as long as she has been well soicalized and seems to take a likeing to you when you go to see her. I noticed you said you also have a Severe Macaw. I rescued an 8yr old Severe Macaw a few months ago.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2009/02/24 19:55

You can bath her in dawn dish soap this will get the oil out of her feathers. Make sure you you rince her really well. if she is still oily after that please take her to the vet if her feathers are comprimised she could die.

I have all flighted bird and they are really noo different than when they are not flighted. They still play on their playstand or cage top most of the time. The only difference is now that they can fly when I sitting watching tv or working at the computer they will fly over to me instead of me having to go pick them up. I don't find that they poop everywhere they still do their bussiness where they have always done it. Birds where meant to fly and the benifits far out weigh the problems. your bird gets the excersize they need to keep them healthy and its not hard to teach them what they are allowed to do and not allowed to do. Ilove to watch my birds in flight the joy and areobatics are something to behold.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2009/02/23 23:05

Hi Mary and Zooman I thought I'd post and say Hi and I also wanted to tell you that my little IRN is finally starting to talk. He seems to be learning from my Amazon he says allot of the same things as she does and also mimics her screams which I'm don't happy about. So far he only has a couple things down perfectly but I listen to him practacing in the morning before I take the cover off his cage and he trys and trys its so cute to kisten to him when he thinks noone can hear:laugh:

I also think cracker has grown into a very handsome Teil. I'm a little bias also I love teils. They are such social loving little birds I could not imagine my household without one. If I saw Cracker in a pet store I think I would not have been able to resist him at the age you bought him what a little sweety. I had a Teil left on my doorstep at that age he grew into thinking he was an African grey he copied everything Tyco did:laugh:
-
If his wings are growing that quickly then they are not clipping him properley take him somewhere else. as for Bo being on Ty's shoulder I have my Teils on my shoulder all the time and have never ever had a problem. Teils are the most friendliest social birds I've ever seen and all they want is love and affection from there humans they will go out of their way to make their humans love them they are not the type of birds that you have to worry about getting bossy so tell Ty if he wants Bo on his shoulder then go ahead. My teils even sit on my Grandsons shoulder and except pets from him and he is only 1 1/2 years old my teils are the only birds I have that I trust enough to let my grandson pet because they won't bite ever.

congradulations on your new baby I would love to see some pictures As long as you don't have the air conditioner blowing on your new bird it should be ok just know direct drafts and not to cold either about 72 to 75 degrees ferinhight is a good tempeture Greys can handle a lot warmer tempatures than we can just make sure that he doesn't over heat make sure he has plenty of fresh water. if it gets really warm you can spray your bird with a fine mist to help keep him cool you can do this a few times a day.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2009/02/23 14:00
