  1. I changed Fergies name when I first got her because I hated the name she had her name was applejack that was 8 yrs ago she didn't mind then and still doesn't mind I think its up to you. You could change it to something that sounds simalar like mabie Mali it sound more maculin but like they say whats in a name a rose by any other name will still smell as sweet.
  2. I agree tha birds should be flighted but at the same time. I always give my birds a minor clip when I get them just to help them adjust to their new home and to show them the dangers and such I have a sun room with very large windows and the bird need to learn about them so they don't fly into them and hurt themselves. So I like to take them around and show them that they are solid I touch the windows and get them to touch them with their beaks I do this 3 times a week until their wings grow out. also you said that you always have allot of people in your house. It is your job to keep your bird safe what if your in the bathroom and one of those people go out for a quick smoke or something and leave the door open and your bird flys away. If you cannot garentee that this won't happen then mabie clipping its wing would be safer for the bird. It is up to each resposible bird owner to decide what is best for them and their birds If you feel there is sufficiant danger that your bird could escape then I think clipping its wings is a safer option. on the other hand if you feel that you can have a flighted bird in your home then by all means DON"T CLIP The birds just love to fly and the squeals of joy and areobaticis will warm any bird owners heart. I have people coming and going at my house also but I have 2 doors so if my birds get out one door then they will find themselves in the mud room. so I don't really have to worry. all my birds are fully flighted and its wonderful to have them fly to me when they want to or when I say come here. I wouldn't have it any other way. I took in an older abused Grey about a year and a half a go and she is definatly not the same bird that I brought home. She is sweet and I can give her scritches and she talks up a storm. She was not permitted to fledge as a baby and still cannot fly very well but she does try and that in itself has built confidence. Taking in an older bird definatly has its rewards it also takes allot of love and patients good luck with your new baby
  3. I have a make sift brooder that I put my birds in should they get sick. Its basic but it works well. Its a large plastic reptile tank the lid has slits for air flo it has a themometer in it to keep at the right tempature 85 degree for baby birds and a heating pad. I would think that he will supply everything I would need though. after all the babies are his not mine except one that I choose. Do you think Tyco would feel like she was being replaces if I got another Grey? I don't want her to feel at all like she isn't wanted I love her so much and a baby will take lots of time and she will be watching all the interation with another Grey. It doesn't seem to bother her when I spend time with the other birds I have now but do you think because the new bird would be the same speices as her that it might bother her more. I have all these things going through my head I do really want to take this baby but I'm worried about how Tyco will take it. I can always find the time because my birds are all friends with each other so I can spend an hour or 2 with 3or4 at a time and we lots of times I have one on each shoulder and one on each knee and its easy to give them each time with me. I usually give Tyco undivided attention because she doesn't interact with any other birds eccept for Fergie. Sometime I will take her and Fergie at the same time but I think she prefers being with me alone and she still has a ways to go she will still only accept scritches before bed or in the morning when she wakes up and only from the safety of her cage. She love to play peek a boo tug-o-war and catch or roly poly with me and she loves her learning games when I teach her different colours, shapes, and songs. I just don't want her to go backwards because there is a new Grey in the house. So much to think about I probubly shouldn't try to analize everything and just wait and see how she reacts with haveing the baby's around who nows mabie she just may like it.
  4. The babies that I would be taking are on 3 feedings a day so thats not to bad I could basicly schedule their feedings around my regular schedule. He lives about three hours away and I have to decide what I'm going to do by Saturday so I can drive up on sunday to get them. Its not difficult to hand feed as long as you make sure the formula is mixed to the proper consistancy and the right tempeture there are things that can go wrong but as long as you make sure the babies crops are emptying out properly and they are gaining and not losing weight its fairly routine and like I said the baby's that I would be takin are already down to three feedings a day so they are around 6 weeks old not ready to wein yet but definatly getting there. I would so love to have a new baby all for myself to snuggle and cuddle and watch it grow into a confident big boy I would definatly want a baby boy I think but you never know I may fall in love with a little girl baby. oh man this is such a big desision. i think i'll sleep on it and see if i come to my sences in the morning. :side:
  5. A breeder friend of mine has just been bless with 4 clutches of African Grey congo's they are haveing a few problems keeping up with it all. I was talking to him this morning and he asked me if I would take a couple of the babies to hand feed for him and if I did he would let me keep one. I'm very tempted I would love to raise my very own baby as Tyco was a rescue as where most of my birds. I have done my share of hand feeding over the years and I could just help out I guess without taking a baby but I certainly would so love a baby Grey I just don't know what todo If I could get my bird room together I guess I'd have the room for it. My time is what I'm most concerned about can I spread myself around enough for one more bird. I guess I'll just have to see how things are for the next little while
  6. I do give my birds a small amout of cheese and milk I mix a small amount of milk when I make their scrambled eggs twice aweek and I also add a small amount of milk to their mashed potatoes that I mix with a few veggies like peas broccoli carrots turnip they love this masked up mix and it has never seemed to give my birds any problems I only add a very small amount of milk mind you. I think that as long as it is used in moderation it is fine for the birds.
  7. How old is your Grey mabie it got something todo with hormones. I know that my Amazon will hold on to somthing with her beak and one foot and scratch under her tail with her other foot when she is hormonal she doesn't do this any other time eccept when she is in her hormonal stage.
  8. I have big birds and small birds and my Amazon gets on well with all of them she is very social and often sits with the little birds on their cages and plays on their boing with them. Tyco on the other hand I still can't trust with the smaller birds they would love to be friends with her and she is getting better about not going into attack mode when ever they get to close I still remove them because if she had the chance I'm positive she would try her best to hurt them. On the other hand she loves Fergie and will come over to Fergies cage and sit on her boing and reach down to preen Fergie I don't know what it is with this YCA of mine but she is the freiendliest bird I've ever met and she seems to attract the attention of everybird in the house and they all love her and want to be with her. She made friends with Gizmo from outside his door while he was still in Quarentine and when he got out they where fast friends and talk to each other for hours during the day. I wish Tyco was more like Fergie but Tyco only likes Fergie none of the other birds mabie she is just jelousof fergies relationship with the birds and wants fergie all to herself. I thik you will know fairly quickly if your birds will accept each other or not you will have to watch closely for awhile. Like I said it can happen though all my birds get along together except for Tyco all the other play together happily and none of them are the same speicies except for the 2 cockateils.
  9. I think most of us have that addiction. I don't even log out anymore. If someone does happen to change to another site without opening their site in a different tab like I do Greyforums is on my favorites so it only take a click to get back to where I was. thank goodness I'm the only one that uses this computer most of the time. My daughter has her own and now that my older daughter has finally moved out I can have my computer all to myself. I think I'll turn the room she was in into a bird room so next time she needs to come home she'll have to sleep on the sofa mabie she won't stay so long. she came home last July for a month or two and didn't leave till 3 days ago.
  10. Tyco calls me mommy and knows what many things are she asks for different things by name like potatos, chicken, macaroni. When she smell chicken cooking she will go on and on chicken yum yum want some there ya go chicken yummy for the tummy. It makes me laugh so hard. Yesterday I was cooking sweet potato's for them and Tyco's said yum potato's. she is really starting to get to know allot of thenames of different foods I give her. it amazes me how vert smart they are. Tyco is 6 years old now and she learns new things all the time. By the time she 20 mabie she will be able to hold a conversation with me. she will already butt into coversations and state her opinion and she usually says the answer correctly.

    Help!

I had Tycos and Fergies nails dremaled at the vet Tycos nails where just like needles and she would dig them deep into my skin she is also a very large grey weighing in at 570 gr her weght alone makes her hold on tight. now that her nail have been dremeled they don't hurt at all. When you first get them done you do have to watch that they don't lose their grip and fall allot but after a week or so they adjust and learn to not fall. What a differance it has made now I can enjoy playing with Tyco and I don't have to be in severe pain when I do hold her.
  12. I have never had a problem with Tyco being loud which kinda suprizes me. Fergie screams at the top of her lungs first thing in the morning for about 10 minutes she gets the dogs howling because she's so loud it sounds like I'm in the middle of the jungle sometimes when Fergie Gizmo and the three dogs get going. I don't think Tyco likes it any more than I do so she doesn't scream at all ever she talks allot though and tell Fergie to be quiet and the dogs no barking. I usally stop all the noise by putting the dogs outside it makes Fergie mad she says no its not fair like I've spoilt all her fun but at least it shuts her up. I have never thought of earplugs sounds like it might be a good investment
  13. I've been meaning to buy one of those adventure packs for years. I think it would be great to take Tyco out for walks in she is not anywhere near being able to be harness trained yet. I think I'll put my order in for one did you get a good deal on yours and if so is there a web site for where you bought it.
  14. I think she needs to see a vet she may have something in her crop that is not digesting 0f she may have a crop infection I'm not a vet but that lump look very unnaturel to me and if she where mine I would have it looked at.
  15. Where I love I see Bald Eagle everyday sometimes 10 or more sitting in one tree They are so beautiful I feel so priveleged to live so close to where they congragate together Sometimes I will go down to the lake just to watch the Eagles fish first thing in the morning then after breakfast the sit in the trees and dry their feathers its wonderful to watch. I wish I had a video camera
  16. what a cutie I love it when birds dance they really do have rythmn I have a couple birds that like to dance but they aren't nearly as good as some that I have seen this one can really shake his booty:laugh:
  17. Boy Do I know what mbs is like I too have birds falling into my lap constantly. At least once a month someone calls me with yet another bird that needs to be rescued. I don't take them anymore. I'm at my limit I can't say that I will never say yes there is 1 bird that if someone out there needed a home for one I would take it and thats an Electus but other than that I am at my limit. It takes all my time to give the birds I have the attention they desire. I don't have a life of my own anymore my life belongs to my birds I give it to them willingly and wouldn't change a thing but I can't divide myself up much more so I'm at my limit for now.
  18. I use the grats but I have several birds so they only get cleaned every 2nd day I clean half my birds one day and the other half of the the next day with 7 cages to clean it easier and more sanitary for the birds to keep the grates in. I find that my birds only poop in one spot in their cages so there is never poop everywhere. Three of my birds won't even poop in their cages at all and Tyco is one of those birds she will hold it until she gets out. My birds cages are open from early morning until bedtime except when nobodys going to be home and that doesn't happen very often. Even when I'm at work my daughter is useually home so I don't have to worry about locking my birds in their cages. I have rubber mats under all of their cages so all I have to do is take the mats outside and hose them down its pretty easy to change the papers and hose down the mats.
  19. I'm so sorry you are going through all this. It sounds to me like you are under allot of stress about you Electus and this so called vet and Dante may be picking up on this and that could be way the change in his behavior Grey are very sensitive to the feelings of their humans and he just may be reacting to what he sences from you.
  20. I hope your not serious when you say that your hitting this cat. I had a siamese cat for awhile also. it was fine while it was a kitten but I soon realized that it was not a good Idea to keep cats and parrots in the samme house. I found a new home for my cat with a cat lover friend of mine. She had just had to put her siamese cat to sleep so I gave her mine to ease the pain. My birds are safer this way. I don't think there is anything you can do to stop the cat from trying to eat your birds its just instince for him to kill and eat birds and a pet bird is easy prey. If you want to keep your birds safe get rid of the cat.
  21. What a cute story My Tyco also calls my shith zu Gloria all the time. She used to come when Tyco called but oneday Tyco bit her eye and now she is blind in one eye. So she has learned to stay well away from Tycos cage. I think Tyco feels bad about it because she hasn't even tried to bite any of the other dogs since this happened just after I got Tyco. Gloria isn't taking any chances she steers clear of Tycos cage. Its funny you would think that something like that would make her fearful of all the birds but it didn't she still protects all the other birds if they happen to end up on the floor she stays right beside them to make sure they don't get stepped on. if some one gets to close she will stand between the bird and who ever and bark to let the person know there is a bird on the floor.
  22. Oh my I'm so sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you.
  23. That bird must be a real sweet heart to have tollerated being stuffed under someones shirt without making a fuss. I hope he's ok and these creeps get what is comeing to them. please keep us updated. I just never understood people that do these things. They must have hearts of stone. To steel someones pet is just like steeling someones child and if I was the judge in these matters i would sentence these people to the same penalty that they would get for kidnapping. It makes me so sad for the people who lost Robert. I know what its like to lose a pet this way. My prize Shith-zu that I had for 9 yrs that I got when he was just 5 weeks old was stolen right out of my yard. I hope and pray that Robert finds his way back home and the people that took him go to jail for a very long time. This story really hits a sore spot with me.
  24. I'm sure there is room for you in Spencers heart. They are flock animals and that means there are usually more than 2 in a flock. Like I said before I'm Tyco's favorite but he totaly loves my daughter also and I'm sure in time both you and Dotty will be able to have a wonderful relationship with Spencer.
  25. Birds are adaptable to what your life style is. When I first got my birds I was a stay at home mom. I did go back to work at firs it was just 2 days aweek then that gradually increased to 4 days a week I do work nights so my birds are only alone for 3 hours before before its their bedtime. I work from 5pm til 11 pm and my birds go to bed at 8 pm. at first it was hard on them and me. I had to buy them all new cages. Because before I started working they were only in their cages to sleep so they didn't need to have big cages. Then when I started working they had to be in their cages for 3 hours. a small cage was not good enough so I went out and got them each a new huge Macaw size cage so they could be locked up and still have room to play. Other than that they have adjusted well. I don't go on vacation very often except mabie a weekend camping trip. Depending on where we go I either take them with me or I get my daughter to house sit while we are away.Like I said birds can and will adapt so don't worry if you want a bird then get one as long as you have a couple hours a day that you can spare to give to your bird the bird will do just fine and will be your very best friend.
