  1. When I switched to a bottle, all I did was put it right above his water bowl and right away he started to look ant touch it. Then he figured it out, I waited about a week before I took his bowl, then monitored the water level of the bottle to make sure he was using it. He still gets to use a water bowl when he is on his stand.
  2. I have the same cage! If not its pretty close to the same. I got mine of CL too, but it was still brand new. The first pic was at our Cali house when I first got the cage. Babalu did not like to stay on top so I took the play top thing off.
  3. I bought this toy online and when I opened the bag I noticed dried glue from a glue gun on the insides from where they glued the materials together. I have read in places it is safe and then that it might not be. Does anyone know for sure?
  4. I adopted mine when he was 2, from a bird rescue that was ran out of a vet. The adoption fee was $300.
  5. I just saw this tube thing at My Safe Bird Store when I was making an order, I got one! Even though Babalu probably wont go in it... http://www.mysafebirdstore.com/cart.cgi?group=0&child=1858&movetopage=0
  6. With the covers I made, the top and the back of the cage is not covered. Just a few inches of fabric hang over the top. I use chip clip things the hold the cover on.
  7. I have made a number of cages covers for Babalu's cage. I think I have one for almost every holiday. Here is a link to a thread that shows a few. It took him a few minutes to warm up to the double sided one, usually I don't put a print on the inside but my closet is getting full of covers http://www.greyforums.net/forums/showthread.php?191527-I-made-some-holiday-cage-covers
  8. My husband and I both work full time and my grey does fine. Even when we moved and I was out of work for a few months, he adjusted to being out all day, and then back to cage most of the day when I started work again. I leave the radio on for him to listen to while we are gone. And he has plenty of toys (who knows if he even touches them) and a forage toy that I know he does use. During the week he is out of his cage from about 530pm to about 830pm and on weekends he is out all day when we are there.

    Neo

This is such a shock to read, I am so sorry for your loss.
  10. I usually put Nutriberries, almonds and even some pellets in Babalu's forage ball.
  11. I bought my first cage of Craigslist, it was not put together but I bought it anyway. When I went to put it together there were screws missing. No big deal really I found some that fit. I also got my second cage, a stainless steel one, from Craigslist too! It was new, never used, so it had all the parts.

    Pellets

I was feeding TOPS (Totally Organics) then switched back to Harrison's High Potency because he likes it better. I noticed he would not touch the pellets in his cage during the day, he would just wait for me to take him out after work to eat his mash. I switched back after a few months and he will now eat pellets in his cage if he is hungry.

    Palm Nuts

My guy didnt like palm nuts very much. He did peel a couple but could not crack open the inside shell.
  14. I have read that if the bird is on a flat surface, the end of the toes should not be lifted to far up due to the long nails.
  15. I have a Dyson, but I also have carpet. My sister in law has an Electrolux and she loves it! It is the quite one for flat surfaces or low carpet.
  16. I am sorry to hear this happened. I hope she has a full recovery.
  17. Babalu tries not to poop in his cage, so when I get him out the first poop is always a big one, then he will poop anywhere, even on me! He only cares about keeping his cage clean But I know the signs and can usually get him to trash can, sink or toilet.
  18. Babalus wings had been clipped when I got him and probably since he was a baby. He is 4 now, and it has been a little over a year since his last clip and he is still missing feathers. He has noticed he doesn't fall straight down anymore when he gets startled and yesterday, I saw him jump off his stand and he headed towards the ground, then he got some lift, took a couple sharp turns when I thought he was going to run into something, then landed on the ground. So I guess my point is I thought my grey didn't know how to fly, but it comes naturally for them I guess. When I picked him up he seemed so happy! Some exercises I tried to do with him was lifting him up in the air and saying weeeeeeee and moving him around like he was flying as I was walking. He flapped his wings sometimes and the other times he just sat on my hand like he wanted to flap but didn't. You know the antsy wing shivers??
  19. I cover my birds cage at night also. I go to the fabric store and get printed fabrics and have fun with Babalu's covers. If it is getting late and he is in his cage he starts whistling, talking and making loud sounds. It reminds me of a kid who is tired, they just act crazy Once he is covered he is quite.
  20. I too always keep pellets in Babalu's cage, but he hardly ever touches them. On our schedule now, he gets his mash when I get home from work, then I clean the bowl and add TOP's seed mix and a boca nut mix along with TOP pellets and just tomatoes hot veggies (still does not touch the pellets). And when he goes to bed I give him an almond in the shell. Not sure why, but he does not seem to eat all day. I did get a new foraging toy that I know he has been trying to get at with no luck. Its just a coconut with small holes cut out. Maybe he doesn't eat the pellets anymore because I give him to much other stuff, IDK.
  21. We traveled across country with my grey and 2 dogs. The dogs were in kennels, and Babalu in a wire travel cage. I did cover the back half of his cage. He stayed pretty quite while driving in the car. We stopped at hotels at night and brought everyone in. We tried to keep the same sleep routine. I got Babalu out of the cage while we were in the hotel room getting ready for bed, and then again while we got ready to leave in the morning. When we got where we were going, we put his normal cage together and again, tried to keep the same routine we did before we moved, and he was fine. This pic was before we covered the back half of the cage (less commotion for him to see).
  22. Update! Babalu had his first short flight since I have had him! Something spooked him and he jump off his stand and instead of falling down, he actualy flew down to the floor like 10 ft! It was not high at all, just a slow desend to the ground. And then a few days later he was walking on the ground and he started to flap his wings and he lifted up of the ground a few inches and moved about 2 feet. So far that is it. But its been about a year since his wings had been clipped.
  23. Nice job! I am saving bottle caps to make toys, thanks for the idea.
