God, they're so easy to get off - I just never had the inclination (but I am considering it now) - I can't believe your vet told you that they might damage your bird's leg! What are they removing the band with - a chainsaw!! What a fool - I wouldn't be letting that vet anywhere near my bird - if they can't remove a simple band I'd hate to see their full knowledge in case something was drastically wrong!

Ha Ha Ha! I love the fact Dixie looks at you as if to say "I knew you were there all along" when she finds you hiding behind that ladder!! It's lovely seeing her playing with her foot toys - Harvey wouldn't like these, because you can't destroy them and he gets frustrated! Thanks for this Robin - I've trained Harvey to watch it so he can see what he's supposed to do!!
-
Ha Ha! Good little Dodo eh? Not so stupid after all!! What a little cutie. I hope that Harvey is so bright when he's old enough to talk!
-
Lucky Lucky Ecko! What a fab array of toys - wonder how long it'll take until they're destroyed. Come on the UK - where's our bird fairs!! I'm sick of Wedding Fairs - I'm married - what about my birdie friend!!!
-
I was wondering how you were going to stop this pair breeding too! You talk of keeping them together, etc etc, but if the urge is there, the urge is there. Can't say I agree with your husband about his views on breeding and the food source - I bought Harvey from a breeder (as probably did 90% of this forum) and I am also a vegetarian!!
-
What a sweet picture of Misty and her ice cream - thanks for this - what a cutie.

Gosh, I'm glad I don't have all of your friends! Mine are all very interested in Harvey and enjoy seeing him acting the way he does. Parrot's aren't as common as pets in the UK as in some other countries - so round here Harvey is a bit of a phenomenon! Everyone is interested in him - especially when we have him out - and only the other day I was offered this man's three children in trade for him!!!! I'll let you know when I meet someone as awful as some of you lot know

Hi Jaguar - Initially there was no training to put the harness on with Harvey - just like huge toys and everything else, he just accepted it (after my first disastrous attempt I felt I would never try again - but the second time he just sat there!). I think I'm going to have to start at the very beginning (a place we've never been). It's such a shame that he can't come outdoors with us without such a fuss and a bother.

Thanks for taking time to write this Scotty - very informative and very interesting.

I love the one of Spok on his back - he seems to be saying "okay guys, I surrender". Fab, thanks for sharing these.

No, it's not a new harness - it's exactly the one that he was used to. We're going out in the garden this morning to do some work - and instead of being out with us we are going to have to cage him. I think it's stressing me more than him!!!

Lost African Grey - Hillsboro, OREGON

This sounds so reassuring. Like you say, if there's not many go missing around your area there is a very good chance this is Athena. I bet you feel like camping out at the pet store. Fingers and toes crossed that this person is seen again soon, and that the grey this person has taken in is Athena. -
Honestly Sheila, there was nothing adverse when I put it on him last before we went away. I only had to say "harness" and he was sitting, ready for me to put it on. He's a nightmare now - I can get it over his head, but when we go to tighten it Harvey will tip himself backwards to the tension of the harness and then lean towards Michael or me and REALLY dig his beak in. During all of this he is making a fuss and once it's on he's back to himself - happily sitting on my arm, ready to go into the garden to fly from his perch to the fences around the decking, or up onto the back fence. He'll sit for hours! It's the same taking the blinking thing off too!!
-
That's the back - you wanna see the front! I can remember the days (pre-parrot) when I used to buy clothes, purses and perfume - now it's parrot food, parrot supplements and toys!! Anything to keep him amused and not bite those blinds behind him!!!
-
What a little tinker Dixie is! That'll teach her won't it!! Poor LP - must've got a shock and a half!
-
I'll start - I'm 34 years old and love Doris Day! It was my grandparents who got me into her about 30 years ago! Sadly, they have both passed, but the Doris phenomenon lives on! I love her singing and her films and all my friends think I'm a loony!

There's nothing wrong with worrying Tracie - you'll do it day in, day out! My worry at the minute is that Harvey is about to crash to the ground with a loud thump as he is now hanging upside down from the outside of his cage, whilst trying to bite a toy that is inside the cage! The stupid thing is - the top of the cage opens to a playstand, so the silly bird could climb in if he wanted! Perhaps he's telling you that he doesn't want you hand feeding him anymore - try putting it in a bowl - see what he does!

I've just been searching the internet for more information on CAGs and stumbled across a local tabloid newspaper's "Items for Sale" website. Going off topic a bit, but it's so sad the amount of greys up for sale (including the 8 month old one with 30 different words and phrases) - Harvey is obviously educationally defunct! I came across this - do you think he'll have any takers? STOVE FOR sale or swop for cockatoo african gray or amazon must be tame talking good with kids. ihave a newholme dual fuel elct/gas kitchen range stove it is only 12 months old cost just over £1000 it has got 4 gas rings side hotplate double oven fanass lights in both ovens and grill storage at side keeps things hot it is black silver &chrome; front doors glass see through ovens less than half price £475 no offers or swop straight swop i am in stirchley b/ham tel --, , £475 , STIRCHLEY, --. He's definitely what we would call round here "a right tosser!". How on earth can people be so callous?

At class next week we will be discussing the pros and cons of sticking to one drink all night. This gives you a whole week to come up with something scientific!

There's no stopping this little old lady Marie - fab news!!! She'll really be milking it for the next few days!!! I have to laugh - Sony reminds me of the Blue Peter cats when I was a kid - I think they were called Jack & Jill!!
-
That's a fab cage - your baby will love it. You'll sit staring at it until they arrive, and then still stare at it when your baby does arrive - this is definitely "empty nest" syndrome!!!

I've just weighed Harvey - he weighs 475g - He's 8 months old.

Whats the weather doing where you are?

The wind is whistling through my slightly opened windows (it's not just a soft wind)!! And it's not too warm either - Northumberland, North East of England! -
Those of you who will have read of my mishaps and triumphs will know my infinity with the Aviator. We went on holiday on 10 July, with Harvey being accustomed and happy with the aviator (I could put this on myself and happily take it off myself) and when we returned he will not tolerate the introduction of it again. I've left it a couple of weeks until I posted about this, thinking things may get better, but they haven't. After two weeks of not using it he is not back to square one. He bites (and I mean proper, I want to maim you bites) and struggles whilst I'm trying to install it again. I've persevered as I am not so scared of his struggling and squealing any more, and when he's installed (after the struggle - don't worry, I don't have him pinned to the floor or anything!!!) he is calm, and enjoys the outdoors as before. What has happened? My parents didn't try to put the harness on, so can they forget in the space of two weeks? Any advice or experiences appreciated :S

Post edited by: JillyBeanz, at: 2009/08/15 09:59

Such a proper baby - four weeks old - my gosh, what a responsibility. Good luck to you for those sleepless nights x
