1. Hi and welcome. You are right to research all you can before getting a grey. They are fantastic birds but as you appreciate are a big commitment. read through some threads hear and get an idea of the problems some people have and also the fun and companionship greys can offer. It is a possible life time comitment . Imagine a 2 year old who does not grow up. As for cost, think expensive.Possible vet fees, and bird vets dont come cheap, toys, yes you can make some of your own, some people on hear do a lot of that.Quality food. Harrisons pellets whic I feed cost £30 for a 5lb bag, this lasts about 7 weeks, then fruit and veg. It all adds up. On saying that I would not be without my grey Charlie. Good luck with the research
2. If zzero is being naughty when on your shoulder, I say no shoulder. It is asking for a bite if you have a battle to remove him, and a face is not a place you want bitten.Practice step up in another room that he is not as sure of and away from his cage. Give lots of praise when he steps up and ignore any bad behaviour. It sounds like he is testing you out. This often happens once the honeymoon period is over. Sheila
3. Hi Alex I hope you like it hear as much as I do.

Blood feather.

Poor Charlie he is really in the wars.My Charlie has had a few anasthetics and I know there are risks involved but he has been fine. It is a case of the risk verses the outcome. Would he be in less pain with the feather removed? I would let him settle down tonight and review in the morning.Personally I would have the feather removed. An anasthetic would also offer the oportunity for a full exam and any blood work or micro chipping if needed.I feel so sad for Charlie he does not seem to have much luck, dam earthquake.Let me know if you want a chat. Sheila

fuirt and vegless

Hi At 12 weeks old your grey should not be too hard to wean on to new food.Just keep at it. Like Caroline sugested try various ways of offering the new food. Also let her see you eating your meal and offer some veg of yours.
6. I too seem to throw lots of fruit away.I dice it and put in the fridge.I use the frozen veg and cook before serving. I do give fresh veg aswell but I waste so much.I have not thought of freezing the fruit,I did not think the tropical fruits like papaya and mango would freeze well.Has anyone tried freezing these.
7. Thats a great photo. Angel sure has a big heart.
8. Hi I think as long as you and your husband are willing and able to take on the hugh task and commitment of a grey then go ahead. Remember all the good and bad things of grey ownership and ensure your husband is aware of all it entails. If you take Paco back, my advise is to treat him as a totally new bird. He may well remember you but you need to get to know the older Paco who may have habbits and issues you were not aware of. It will take time and a lot of patience to re establish a bond but it can be done as you will see by reading through verious threads hear. I wish you luck and hope you keep us informed of your decision. Sheila

Post edited by: she, at: 2008/11/16 11:49

Skittles

I have read that taking the bird in to a strange room can help by making you the most familiar thing and being out of view of the cage eliminates cage agression. I think time each day is the answer for skittles. As Pat pointed out a few short sessions a day will see big improvements
14. Hi Lolamay. Welcome to the forum. I hope you love it hear. Yes greys are demanding as you know, but we love them for it. I would not worry too much about the feather.as long as the bird is not bleading.Finding the odd feather in the cage is normal.Larry sounds like a great bird. Please let us all know more about him we love photos too. more the better Sheila

Ice Update

I am glad Ice has a clean bill of health. You are spot on by sugesting handling him as much as possible but on his terms. Will he take treats from your hand, thats always a winner.
16. Hope all Americans get the president they want and need.Hope its a good result for not only America but the world. This is an off topic area so I see no reason why the election which is a major world event cant be brought up. I see nobody pushing their views just general coments on the election.Thats how it should be.Good Luck America.
17. Great video. Harvey looks well.

Ice Update

Ice is probabley a bit nippy because everything is new.Just ignore it and dont pull away. His diet will have to change over time. You can not do it all at once. First cut out the junk food. Then introduce healthy food. Try offering veg in different ways, some like it raw some cooked, some warm some cold.Let him see you eating it and make out its yummy. As Carolyn stated, greys usually insist on having what they cant have.
19. Well, Sassy just loved that shower.
20. If she does it in 2012 she will probably still try for 2016, knowing her. I wish I had part of her grit and determination. 3 mile just about kills me.
21. I am very pleased you found the cause of the problem.Things should improve with the meds.Let us all know of the progress.
22. Yes well done indeed. I was rooting for Paula Radcliff in the ny marathon. The girl done well.I realy admire her.

24. Shanlung is one of the most experianced avian trainers . He is someone we can only aspire to and respect. His training is way way beyond the wildest dreams of even very experianced grey owners, not for the novice.

Post edited by: she, at: 2008/11/03 12:46
