1. Good luck! Tobie was two last june 15th. I believe he would have a full set of flight feathers by now, but he was upset with them for being so long, or they were uncomfortable just coming in one here one there. Dave described to me why he chewed them off and it made sence that it would be uncomfortable and then there were the ones he broke off in his clumbsy attempts to fly. He now has one pretty nice looking wing and one that is missing too many flights for him to fly. I'm not sitting on pins and needles anymore waiting for new feathers to grow in. It will happen when it happens. Like LUV said - You guys will hear about it - I'll be shouting from the roof of my house - Tobie can fly!!! Tobie can fly!!!!!
2. What a scare that was. So sorry! Hope her eye heals quickly. Glad she is OK.
3. Tobie sleeps high in his cage on a twisty rope perch. I've never covered his cage. Should I? His cage is in a corner but if I get up in the night he can see me coming out of the bedroom.
4. congratulations! It's funny how they like to talk to the dogs.
5. I think I'm a hybrid too. I'd like to be an african grey, but I'm not that smart.
6. It depends on their mental attitude at the time. If Tobie is on alert his eyes are perfectly round. If he is very relaxed and puffed up a bit his eyes are more eliptical. I'm looking at him now and he is on my shoulder making cooing noises - they're round. {Emotions-00020070}
7. Tobie does something like that. Makes a loud popping or banging noise with his beak.. Puts his beak on something metal or the wood work and pops his beak. Makes a really loud sound no more movement than there is.
8. I think you should get 10 more greys. {Feel-good-0002006B} Then you won't have the time to worry about every little sound they make. Kind of like people with 10 children don't go rushing them to the doctor every time they get sick.{Characters-000200D2}
9. My reaction was the same as chimaysmommys reaction when I saw the add. It sounds herbal, but that doesn't make it safe.
10. Chimaysmommy, I was thinking of another grey because I think Tobie would get along best with another grey. Again I wonder if I'm doing this for Tobie or for me. If I chose another type of bird (not really considering it) I've always loved the beauty of the eclectus. Riley on "you tube" is a scream. I noticed a comment by Samsdad on the other post comparing adopted vs starting with a baby. "I had adopted a 8 year old Amazon and it worked out very well until I learned I couldn't be a two bird person. I overestimated my ability to give my two birs the attention they needed. " I guess fear of that situation is what keeps me a single parrot owner. I am working 9-10 hours four days a week though. On the days I am home from work I spend at least half the day away from home. Tobie goes with me if he can but so often he can't. The company would be nice for Tobie. When I had cockateils I never just kept one. I made sure they had each other for company.
11. Thanks so much for sharing your situations and advice. I guess I need to decide if I'm doing it for me or for Tobie as Emmas mom said and others have said in other ways. Also, Frank loves Tobie though he doesn't personally handle him much. I wouldn't want that to change because of all the time my birds are taking away from him. Two does sound like the right number though. Tobie would get to experience having another bird around and that couldn't be anything but good.
12. Periodically I consider getting a little sister or brother for Tobie. Usually these urges pass after a while but each time they come they are stronger - kind of like trying to decide if you want to have a child or not I guess. I'm wondering what everyone who has two birds in the house or more think about it. Does it overwhelm you making you doubt your sanity when you brought the other bird in. Are they flighted, are they male and female or two males or two females, how do they get along togeather and how old was the first bird when the second one came? These are some of my questions. Just thinking about it. Would it be good for Tobie, or a big stessful event?
13. Thanks so much Dave for the explanation. Now I've got it. I see why you shouldn't encourage that behavior. Ohh! I just saw the video. No, I've never seen Tobie do anything close to that.

Post edited by: Janfromboone, at: 2009/09/22 21:56
14. Samsdad, I didn't take the time before to read your long post and just came back to it. You said it all. I think every perspective bird owner should read this - the good and the bad.
15. Dave, I know I'm dense sometimes and have to have it spelled out. Exactly what kind of behavior is sexual on the birds part? Samsdad sais that what I described that Tobie does is simply begging, (also Tobie is only 2yrs old) so maybe I don't understand. You said they would become flexable and wrap themselves around your hand? The only thing close to that that I have seen is Tobie swinging his head around and it ends up between his legs all in a twist lying over onto my neck almost upside down. Is this sexual behaviour? I thought he was just being playful. I guess I need some graphic descriptions. Anyone got a youtube video?
16. Dayo is having a ball with the toilet paper. Tobie's paper was a roll of adding machine paper. Dayo is just as content with the toilet paper though. Great cheep toy.
17. Tobie never screams. He just talks alot - especially in the morning and evening. He can get pretty enthusiastic with his whistle sounds. I need to make a video of that sometime. It's pretty remarkable - to me anyway.
18. So glad to finally see a video of anna grey. Pretty girl.
19. #30 They can sound so profound and intelligent and actually carry on a conversation with you - they just amaze you everyday.
20. Tobie kind of pants, drops his wings and moves them away from his body and rocks his head like he is going to upchuck, but hasn't. I guess this is what we are talking about. I usually just walk away from him when he does this because I don't want to encourage it, but frankly jen has a point. I had cockateils once and the females would masterbate on a perticular branch in the cage - and seem to satisfy themselves. The male I had always had the female (who sometimes preferred the branch).
21. Wow! what great comments to pearlyn. I wish I could bookmark this article for reading later when I need it.
22. I found it!! It was our darling Emma.
