You described that so well. I could see the whole play unfold. Can't wait to read your book, but I think you should write it in your own words.

How could we possibly get tired of Emma. She's a dear!!

I just wanted to post this. It's my favorite showering video. Not a grey - sorry.

I've recently wondered if Tobie is normal. Before Tobie I've noticed other parrots, amazons and others sitting in their cages in pet stores and other places and sleeping during the day. It just occured to me the other day that I've never seen Tobie sleep during the day. On days when I'm home with Tobie he is either in the cage with the door open or downstairs with me on the back of the couch. He NEVER sleeps. He is playing, chewing, preening, eating, talking, or sitting on one foot and just staring at nothing. Is this normal?

Lots of tears being shed for your Joey. I don't know what happened, but you gave him a chance at life that he didn't have before you had him. For that you should be very happy and be happy for all the good times you had together. Joey showed you what love is all about, and you showed him how to trust and love.

Tobe never stopped chewing the straps of the flight suit until I stopped putting it on him. I guess they were uncomfortable to him. I put new straps on that were longer etc. Now I use the aviator harness - still a little hard to get on, but we are working on it and he doesn't chew the harness once it is on. I miss the poop pouch though.

If you think you have problems with frisky greys

Oh my gosh!! I just saw this on facebook and I had to laugh all over again seeing it here. Imagine a wild parrot climbing up on his arm and then having a mating behavior with a camera man. I don't know what the poor bird was thinking. -
Lovin his shower! Tobie only very rarely fluffs up for a shower. He likes them but mostly just gets under the spray and sits. Great video of the shower.

What a smarty pants you've got there.

I was trying to figure out why I don't have time anymore for some of the things I used to do. Then I came to the conclusion that Tobie is just so entertaining and can actually "ask" for my attention and I end up spending more time with him than I am aware of. Does your grey laugh when it's funny?

Katana and Jane - Those stories were wonderful. What little tricksters. Karma to you for having the cleverest little tricksters. -
Yes, Tobie gets palm oil - a finger full on the edge of his vegetable dish almost everyday. He goes to that before eating anything else. Thanks Judy - at least I know Tobies not alone.

Ha! "Dayo hot, wanna go inside" I think there is another grey that knows what he is saying. Thanks everyone for your comments! I think Frank is responsible for Tobie's enthusiasm for football. Now when he sees it on TV he announces it. -
I look at it so differently now than I did when I bought Tobie. I still have anxiety over him flying away. I lost a cockateil that way once and still have dark moments when I think about that and it was 14 years ago. I used to be glad he was clipped because of that fear. Now I really want him to fly and think about all the other ways I can keep him from flying away other than clipping.

Thanks for your comments on the video everyone. I'd love to see a video of Charlies horse laugh casper. When Tobie is saying something off the cuff - of his own design I notice it isn't as clear as a practiced thing and I often don't notice these little tidbits until I video it. Like when he said Tobie's going back in. Can't be sure thats what he ment to say, but it sure sounded like it. I'd love to see videos or hear stories about bird that surprised you with words or phrases. Maybe I should start another post. -
Did reality measure up to your hopes?

How could he know if he liked me or not. I just assumed that he was anxious about being handled by some one he didn't know and being away from his cage. Overall he just sat wide eyed staring at me. He was wonderful with the girls that work there and so I felt that he could get to know me. I couldn't have made a better choice. He lets me wear red shirts now. -
I haven't figured it out yet. I thought Tobie had stopped chewing and some six months later he chewed the two flight feathers coming out at the very end of the wing. Some how he has grown an almost perfect wing on one side. Its almost worse, because now he spins when he trys to fly down. Lots of baths and misting seemed to help Tobie stop the habit when he first started and he was in a heavy molt. I used aloe vera juice that I bought from Walmart to spray his body and wing feathers too. Something stoped it.

Jane 08 - that is so funny "Lets go for a ride Toot- Toot". I'll have to see if Tobie will say that the next car ride. Dans right from what I've seen. What throws them for a loop is something in their own environment. A new toy in their cage is more upsetting to them than passing a huge noisy truck when we are out for a car ride. Tobie loves to go for walks and car rides and seems to love it when I take him places. I've tried to do that since he was a baby.

And the Nominees for Best Supporting Act are......

Wonderful post. My husband rarely wants to handle Tobie. However one day I went into the livingroom and there he was with Tobie on his shoulder. He occasionally will bring him to the T-stand in the dining room for dinner. He just adores Tobie from afar though. Tobie picks up words much more quickly from Frank than he does from me. Tobie sounds just like Frank. We both laugh alot more now than ever before. That bird has just added so much to our home. -
I forgot how cute they are when they are young.
-
sounds so adoreable. Try to get a video.
-
Yea!!! Tobie is so jealous.
-
Does your grey laugh when it's funny. Asside from his chattering and practice sessions does he know what he's saying when he wants to communicate. I think Tobie does. Anyone else have some video of your birds being brilliant with their words or laughing at their own jokes? Here is Tobies latest video.

I wonder if it matters if you actually meet the bird first. I picked Tobie in a very clumbsy uninformed kind of a way. I knew very little about african greys and was choosing between Tobie and an amazon. Tobie wasn't all that relaxed with me as a 3.5 month old, but the amazon was worse- trying to fly away and wouldn't allow me to hold it quietly. The second time I visited Tobie he hated the red shirt I wore and attacked it. I thought we would be better togeather once I got him home and well the rest is magic. There certainly was no chemistry at the pet store.
