My grey has never had the opportunity to fly. Clipped as a baby when I bought him, he began to molt out his clipped flight feathers and one by one he chewed them off as they got long enough to extend past the other wing feathers. I've heard that you can put plastic ornamental things that stick to the glass on your windows until the bird learns about glass. You can sometimes find them at the dollar store or Walmart. I used to feel that the birds were safer clipped, but after reading all the pros and cons, and after watching Tobie crash to the floor many times, I think it is good for birds to be flighted for a while at least.

I've thought that same thing when I post videos and tell people about what an amazing pet Tobie is. I'm afraid they'll run right out and buy one. -- be that as it may - she really said "I love you forever". And she probebly will.

Shirts, earrings, chewed the carpet off a corner by the steps. Doesn't look so bad. Carpet is just about the color of the wood. I have a dog that has done worse. Now, when I forget to take my earrings off, Tobie just flips them and yells "Quit that". He doesn't actually bite them anymore.

Sounds like you love your Alfie like I love my Tobie! Nice poem sais it all.

Good post. You do have to accept the negatives with the positives. The positives are soooo very positive though. I did some calculations and I decided that it takes about 400 bird poops to make one 50lb dog sized poop - and the 400 bird poops still smell better. Of course I'm not talking about morning bird poops.

I too have read on the forum and elsewhere that the African Grey doesn't like new experiences and is generally a quiet and reserved personallity. Tobie can get nervous - don't get me wrong - but he generally enjoys sitting on my shoulder for walks around the lake and car rides with lots of tail swishing. He doesn't care for strangers coming into the house but what an extravert when it's just Frank myself and Tobie. He has such a great sense of humor and keeps me laughing. What an acrobat he is, flipping upside down and when I say "be careful" he lets go hanging by one leg waving the other and saying "AAOOOOOWWWWWW"

It makes sense. Tobie plays and bites when he plays. I have to let him know if he gets to rough for comfort.

What a dear sweet girl. I love Emma soooo much too.

She was having so much fun. Tobie loves his double ring rope swing. I'll bet he'd love an atom even more.

Tobie too was clipped before learning to fly. He has developed a habit of chewing off his flight feathers when they get long as if he thinks they should be clipped. Keeping my fingers crossed that this year he will grow new flight feathers. In the mean time he has almost no flight- so I take him outside with me without fear of his flying away and he enjoys foraging in the grass and being outside unhindered by aviator vest. Trying to make a good thing out of bad. He gets to just be a bird in other ways than flying.

Tobie just had a birthday and he is two. I hear about the terrible twos and just talked to an owner who describes his 12 year old grey as not too friendly and doesn't like toys. I'd like to know what I have to look forward to with Tobie as he gets older - beyond the terrible twos and into his mature years. I know what a sweet and life loving, funny little guy he is now. How are the older greys - do they still like to play with toys and with owners? Do they still want attention from their owners?
