I found it so difficult to choose a name for my last grey! I had poor Jasper for about 3 weeks before I decided on a name! Like Jen said get to know its personality it really helps. Keep us all updated:)

Hi Sammel, welcome to the forum. Has your grey been ill for a period of time? What exactly is the liver problem and what treatment or meds is he on at the moment. Did the feather ripping start at the same time or after your grey was diagnosed with the liver problem? Sorry to ask so many questions but it helps to get as much information as possible. Caroline

It will be interesting to hear your replies to peoples answers Annmarie! I dont quite know what interest you have as I gather from your previous posts you wont be looking for a breeder in the near future, people normally ask questions like this to advise them? What exactly are you doing with the information from this thread? How is it going to benefit you? I look forward to your response!

Where and when did you find the feathers David? Was Annie at the shop or at home? Did you find them in the morning or throughout the day? Did you notice if the ends had been chewed at all? Its a difficult one to answer, the others have given good advice, my greys when they have been younger have lost them through rough play in their cages as well, but its hard to say for sure. Caroline.

Nims, Sorry to hear about Indy. Lets hope the vet can shed some light when the results are back. Good luck and keep us posted. Caroline.

Ina, I can sympathise with you about the noise but unfortunately ignoring is the only thing you can do and hopefully Charlie will soon get bored when she gets no reaction from you. Another thing you could try is to distract Charlie in some way when she starts the schreeching! Sometimes they can pick these things up and forget them within a week. Why not go have a word with the neighbours and just explain what has happened, at least if you speak to them about it they should be more understanding. Caroline.

Shalom, I understand more of Apollos past now, thankyou for taking the time to explain. Bye the way, I just looked at the picyure on your profile and that is a wonderful set up you have there for you grey. When Apollo is hungry, does he willingly go into his cage for the food and seem at ease when he goes in there or is he nervous going in the cage at all? I think its going to be an issue to get Apollo to stay in his cage, he sounds like he associates it maybe with a bad experience, who knows as we dont know any more about his past. We need to think of a way of making the cage appealing and a friendly space for your grey to go, does he ever go in the cage at all to play with any toys or is it just to eat? Sorry for asking so many questions its just the more information we get,we can get to thinking about different solutions. Will he go into a large carrier if you have one? What is he like in the carrier? Does he freak out in there? I only ask as some people do use a large carrier for their grey to sleep in as well and wondered about the possibility of doing this. I look forward to hearing from you. Caroline.

Yes, I agree with Dan, they love to do all weird and wonderful things to amuse themselves! Sounds similiar to the chicken scratching a lot of them do when they are babies.

Hello Shalom, Welcome to the forum, its great you could join us. Do you know anymore about your greys background? Do you know how long he has been plucking for? Its good news that the tests have come back from your vet saying that your grey is healthy. I just wondered if we could trigger when exactly the plucking started! You are doing all the right things and have obviously done a lot of research. Did the vet blame the clipped wing as the cause of the plucking? Since you had your grey has he always just slept on an open perch? he really should be in a cage for his own safety but this will be difficult to do if he is not used to ever being in one. If you dont want him in a cage full time, i would just buy a small sleeping cage and see if you could get him to sleep in this. Did he injure his self this morning when he fell? Or are you worried about future possible injuries? I do hope you manage to get him to use some kind of cage, I think it will take time but will be a lot safer for him at night time. Caroline.

Dave, Some people do give vitamins or supplements to their greys but I dont. If they are getting a good varied diet they should be getting everything they need from that. Also some people do add a calcium supplement. Everyone will have different answers to this one it depends on their grey and their diet.

Hello Gerald and Cloudy, welcome to the forum! Cant wait to hear more about you both and see some pictures! Congratulations on your new baby. Caroline.

Mark, It will take your baby a while to adjust to the new surroundings, people, routine etc. Take things slowly and let your baby girl go at her own pace. My 6 month old baby is only starting to show his true personality now and I have had him for over three months. They are all individuals as well so you may read of someone whos grey loves to be cuddled all day and others may not. You will find out what your bird is comfortable with. Its early days and it sounds as though things are going really well for you. Have you posted any pictures in the Nursery yet? If you get time please post some in the Baby album for all of us to share. Caroline.

http://www.greyforums.net/forums/the-nursery/73409-handfeeding-a-baby-grey.html Hello and welcome to the forum, congratulations on your new baby grey. Above is a link which will give you a guide to hand feeding and the amounts you should be feeding. I would continue until you can see he is eating more of the pellets and veggies on his own. Try and moisten the pellets if he wont eat them dry, thats what I had to do with my youngest. All greys will wean at different ages, mine were all weaned by 12 weeks others on the forum have weaned before this and others much later! Just monitor the amount that is eaten and like you are doing already, keep a track of his weight as well. I look forward to hearing more about you both and seeing some pictures of your new Tag. Caroline.

I hope everyone had a great weekend! We had a busy one for a change and I actually ventured out into the big City which I dont normally do! It was my husband Daves birthday yesterday so we all went out for a meal on Saturday night. The meal was fantastic, you could choose from Thai, Chinese, Italian or Indian food and eat as much as you wanted! Boy, were we stuffed! Even better when we saw the chocolate fountain for afters, my kids couldnt get enough! Yesterday we had friends come round which was really nice as we hadnt seen them in a while, we put the tree up which looks lovely and it feels like Christmas already! The greys were fine and it didnt bother them one bit! Got up this morning and it started to snow! So christmas tree, snow and Christmas music playing, sat here with my wonderfyl boys! What a great day! Have a great Monday everyone! Caroline.<br><br>Post edited by: casper, at: 2008/12/01 13:06

Hi BarbaraJean and welcome to the forum. So this grey has been in the family for 7 years? How old is he and have your family been the only owners of Billy? This is going to take a long time to build Billys trust, is there a reason why he has been cage bound for so long? You are going to have to take things very slowly with Billy to gain any trust from him. Dont expect too much too soon! When you say you are his carer now has he moved to a different home as well? Start by just talking to Billy, you can do this from a distance he is comfortable with, just sit and read to him, talk to him in general about your day, speak to him in a nice soft voice eventually he will hopefully feel at ease with you. Can he be handled at all? Or has he not had much human contact with being in the cage?. Maybe a bit more information on his background will help us to give you better advice. I look forward to hearing more about you both. Caroline.

I dont think its just luck Sheila, you can tell how close you are to your Charlie and how much you love both of your birds! You are dedicated to both Charlie and Cracker and I am so pleased for you that you have not had any problems! You are a great bird mum!
-
Wow Sheila! 40! He is a good looking fella! Thanks for sharing Blue with us.

Carolyn, I have started saving the safe pieces from the half destroyed toys and placing them in the greys toy buckets they have on their cargo net! They love having a look through and pulling all the bits out. Its as though they have a new set of toys!
-
Annias, Dave has given great advice as always! I have three greys which are all in the same room but in seperate cages. I have found no problems with any of them bonding with me at all. Even though I am lucky that I can now have the boys all out at the same time I always spend one on one time with each of them. I have learnt that they are all individuals and need treating differently. I hope you get to give a good loving home to these greys, please keep us updated. Caroline.
