I totally agree with the hands on approch and I do mean hands on I don't just have Adaya perching on my hands, arm, or finger. in fact that's rare I hold her like a Baby or cup my hands around her or I hold her like she was a cat or small animal but she is always always in someway close to my body when I am holding her and she loves it she's very confident and isn't afraid of anything yes sometime a little leary at first but not afraid she pretty secure when it comes to checking out new things. I do hope this continues as she gets older at this point she the best thing that ever happened to me. Then again I say that about all my birds I just love them soso much. Even Tyco who was a rescue isn't afraid of much she excepts new toys easily and loves to try new Things as in foods and games I teach her. so all and all I'd say they're pretty happy well adjusted birds.

Hi Erica gosh do I know what your going through My male IRN has just gone fromthe most sweetest lovey bird you could ever want or ask for into the meanest thing I've ever seen He actually tryed to attack my face today and if I hadn't put my hand up when I did I'm sure my face would have beena bloody mess instead of my hand. He's not even old enough yet to be this way but I now know exactly what your going through this is the second time in 2 days that he's done this its totally out of charactor for him but if I didn't know it was hormones I would be afraid of him. So I guess he's going tobe in his cage for awhile and I'll be changeing his diet and sleep times also. With Fergie she just was always trying to build a nest. but with the Boys its obviously a totally different thing. He's extreamly aggresive thank goodness I only have 2 boys and the rest are girls and hopefully my macaw has learned to deal with his hormones a bit since he is 8 yrs old because I would really hate to be attacked by him with a beak the size of his he could really do some severe damage. I feel for you because you have a house full of male birds gosh I've heard that male Amazon can get really nasty. Theres always an exception to the rule lets hope your bird is that exception.

you can do that but what happens at the end of the day. your going to lock him back in his cage. Then wait till he flops down on the floor again to put him on the little stand. I think its going to take him quite awhile before he understands if he's cagge aggresive. It will work allot faster if you can keep him out of that cage completelty for a few days mabie you could set up a sleeping perch somewhere in a corner of a room up a little higher some place where he can see the whole room but has the shelter of 2 walls around him and use it as a place for him to sleep. He will get over his cage aggretion allot faster this way. After a week or so you maybe able to use his cage as a sleep cage again but at first I would try to take that cage totally away from him.

cute video he's definatly practicing I can hear some vocalizations that soud very close to words it won't be long before he's talking your ear off.

Thats so great KoKo's quite the little flyer isn't she thats grey't gets her lots of really good excersize Adaya can fly like that her and my Indian ring Neck play tag or chase or some kind of flying game and they will fly continuously from one end of the house to the other round and round for at least an hour every morning its so much fun to watch them you can just see the altimate joy on their faces and they squeel like little kids when they get really excited. You must have been laughing pretty hard yourself when Koko scared the heck out of your wife.:evil: :laugh:

I got a Severe Macaw about 6 0r7months ago that was totally cage bound and had been for severel years at least 5 yrs his owner developed a severe alergy to him after her cance treatments and instead of rehoming him she locked him up inhis cage in a room all by himself his leg band says 01 so he is 8 yrs old and i'm pretty sure she didn;t have him long before she got cancer. Any way when I got him he was in terrible shape not sick but had not bean taken care of well total sead diet never bathed and no interaction with humans for a very long time. Its been a while since I've had him and he's gotten allot better but up until a couple of days ago he still would not step foot off his cage sometimes he would sit on top but he never leave it and if I asked him to step up he would run into his cage or try and bite me. So I decided I was going to take his cage away from him completely I bought him a playstand that is like a cage only with no bars. (i'll Post a pic) and put all his favorite toys on it. Then I put him on it which was no easy task let me tell you. but since then he steps up no problem. he comes looking for me when he wants some attention he loves for me to give him scritches he's molting and he just loves me to pinch all those pins coming in on his neck and head. the first 2 nights I let him sleep on the playstand the third night I moved him to the top of his cage which is in another room from the playstand but I locked the cage door so he could not go in. last night I opened his cage door and let him sleep inside and let me tell you this morning he couldn't step up fast enough for me to get him onto his play stand tonight I put him in his cage again for bed and he actually said to what are you doing I said its bed time he said why why you doing this he was upset to have to be put in his cage to sleep. He has become a totally different bird in less than a week its almost like someone switched birds on me in the middle of the night. don't know if this will work for a Grey It was just an experiment that I wanted to try because I hated see in me bird being in prison and afraid to leave it so I wanted to show him there was more to life than the way it was. This is a picture of the playstand I got for him its like a cage but it has no bars. Like I said this was just an experiment it worked really well for my bird better than I could have ever asked for but It may not work for yours but it might you never know. I don't think that's true of any talking bird My amazon can whistle lots of different songs and she also talks allot so if its not true of one bird I can't see why it would be true of another

I have a Male Indian Ring Neck he's 15 months old he doesn't even have his rings yet but they are starting to show a little. I thought that Ring necks didn't become sexually mature until they reached 2 yrs old. Mine is showing definite signs of being extremely hormonal this morning he was sitting with me quite nicely and then I noticed he was looking in the mirror at himself and regurgitating and dancing and I said to him what are you doing silly bird. well he turned and bit me on the cheek(face) he didn't draw blood but it was definitely a hard bite it hurt. I guess he didn't like me interrupting him while he was courting himself. I've notice he's doing other sexual thing also like making time with his toys. I didn't expect this so soon or am I wrong when I say that they aren't sexually mature til they are 2 yrs old?

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2009/06/30 09:53

Isn't just wonderful to see them in flight like nature intended. I love to watch my baby's fly there is nothing more awesome than to see the joy on their little face when their playing catch me if you can with another birdie friend.

Well after yesterday mornings episode things have gotten allot better. I guess he just didn't understand that when I said step down it meant to get off me. so after having to take my sweater off with him hanging on to it he got the message that when I say step down its a very good Idea that he do it. Anyway ever since then he has done it perfectly. I also wanted to say that this taking his cage away was the best thing I could have done he actually is coming to see me when he wants to and he can see his old cage from where he is but he never goes back to it. I really wish I had of done this along long time ago. Mabie he would have gotten over being so cage territorial allot sooner. I do use his cage as a sleep cage, but first thing this morning I went in ans uncovered his he came out and I said step up and he did and then I took him to his playstand and said step down and he stepped right down onto his playstand he just seems so much happier and content now I feel bad that he had to endure another 8 months of being in a cage after comeing here oh well thats all in the past and the future looks very happy and bright for my sweet boy.:laugh: {Love-0002011D}

I just finished hand feeding my baby from 5 weeks old also she's about 4 1/2 months old now when the crop is full its like a bubble that should feel firm and nicely rounded. There is a thread in the nursury about hand feeding its very helpful to new owners. have you ever hand fed a bird before if not please be very careful its can be dangerous for the bird if you don't know what your doing.

That's a very nice toy and it does look like its very easy to make you could really get creative and stuff it with tons of different shreadables I'm going to look on ebay for the palm leaves and buy some for my birds.

I use Zupreen pellets and most avian vets carry harrisons my vet only recomends these 2 type of pellet she says Exact doesn't meet the same high standards as Zupreem and Harrisons. -
Thanks for the laugh happy hatchday Schroeder I know it probubly wasn't fun for you chaseing him around trying to put him to bed but It sounds like he was haveing a very fun time playing with his mom I think thats so sweet how on earth did you keep from laughing.:laugh:

I like this topic also I think it will be very helpful for those who are new to birds to understand why their birds have started to bite and maybe help the biting to stop rather than deciding that their bird is just plain mean and rehoming it or locking it away forever so I'm giving you karma for this thread and if I could give you 10 I would great thread Dan thank you for posting it.

The really do sense what your feeling and because you where hurting he felt that and saw the expression on your face He did understand in his own birdie way. Dan I totally agree with you a birds beak is the only thing that he can defend himself with you can never convince me that if a mom and dad bird had something getting to close to their nest that they aren't going to bite what ever it is and do their very best to tear the flesh right off it so the next time its going to think twice. I had a cat that I had to have its tail amputated because he tried to get to the baby's in a birds nest those bird all but tore that cats tail off it had absolutely no flesh left on it. Cost me 400. so there is no way that bird don't bite in the wild they most certainly do. If anything I thing we can actually turn a bird around so it no longer feels a need to bite.

Is this a sometimes thing or a continuous thing if it just sometimes it could be the pitch or the sound he's hearing sometimes Tyco will do that to certain sound on to tv or radio. she actualy does it quite often if I watching a video of other birds talking or if I'm whistleing a song to her. or it could be all those new feathers coming and they're bothering her. and if thats the case a few nice soaking in the shower will help soften them up so the don't hurt and itch to much.

Thats so awesome I have a little girl baby also and she is the most sweetest precious little thing she loves to cuddle and play she is so much fun. I hope you enjoy your baby girl as much as I do mine. have you decided on a name I think the Nevaeh is a great name for a little girl its Heaven spelt backwards. Just a thought I didn't hear of that name until I already named Adaya so if you like it by all means feel free to use it.
