Judy I'm not afraid of the bird I'm afraid for my house. I have so much natural wood everywhere. Before I bought my home it belong to the chief of the Indians that live on the researve. He was very into keeping things as natrual as possible and when he added the addition of the sun room he put up natural beams and all really beautiful natural wood around the windows and I can just picture what its going to look like when if Harley gets his beak on it. I know its just training none of my other birds have touched it. I just got to make sure I have lots of toys and things to chew so he doesn't get any ideas thats why I have to get some large toys made quickly.

yes I have been wondering about that also. Is he a girl or a boy sparrow we need an update.

Do you think its to early to pick up Harley I'm so excited. Today I get my very first very large bird. I don't know if I have a carrier large enough for him to even bring him home. I'm scared now I've never been nervous about bringing a bird home but I'm very nervous about this one. I've been reading everything I can find on Harlequin Macaws all week and when I was bringing home Jeepers I did a ton of research on Macaws in general but the thought of having such a big bird in my house scares the daylights out of me.

Well I have 6 and I was hoping to stop at 5 but It seems there is always someone that wants me to take a bird that needs rescuing with My baby Grey I guess I could have said no to that one she didn't need rescuing I always wanted a baby Grey and when the breeder said he would give her to me for really cheep how could I say no. I have a week spot for the birds that are in desperate need of a good home. The ones that have no toys and live on a total seed diet and are crammed into cages that are way to small and left there 24/7. With very little attention. I just feel a responsibility to all these poor birds that we humans took into our home because we thought they where beautiful and wanted to make pets out of them and now there are so many that are homeless or that need homes and there is no way that they can be returned to the wild so its up to us. We as a human race have a responsibility to what we tame so I try and do my part. If I had lots of money I would open a sanctuary for parrots. I don't so I do what I can within my means. I guess I'm just a crazy bird lady. I can't take in any more now I'm completely out of cages and I have no room to put the ones I have all ready I'm still trying to figure out where I going to put Raja after I move him into his new cage. Right now the cage he's moving into is sitting in the middle of my kitchen table because I don't now where I'm going to put it when I bring Harley home tomorrow. I really have to clean out my spare bedroom and turn it into a bird room its just full of furniture and I don't know where I would put it all. Maybe I should have a yard sale or something.

Grey't news I'm glad Spock and Jim are becoming good friends. Your lucky to have such laid back easy going birds. Its so nice when everyone gets along.

I ditto what Judy says I'm waiting to hear that your baby has arrived safely.

Your formula should be mixed with warm water til it is the consistency of pudding or gravy make sure its not to hot or the baby's crop will burn just so it feels barely warm on the inside of your wrist like you would test a baby's bottle. Tube feeding can be dangerous your better off to just use a syringe because if the tube falls off it could get stuck in the baby's crop. Since you don't have any Avian vets around this could be fatal. make sure the formula is nice and smooth you don't want any undissolved formula because your baby may have a hard time digesting it and if it sits in the crop for to long your baby can get a bacterial crop infection. If the crop is not completely empty at least one every 24 hours it is dangerous you can help the baby empty its crop by giving him of her a little apple sauce but only if the crop is not completely emptying between feedings. I hope this helps a bit and welcome to the family.

Welcome to our family its great that your doing your home work before getting a Grey that is so important. I have a few birds including 2 Greys and with each new bird its always tons of research so I have some Idea what I'm in for. I'm adopting a Harlequin Macaw and I've been reading everything I can find on them for the last week Its hard to do when its a rescue situation and you don't have much time. I try. I have quite a bit of knowledge when it comes to birds in general but I still like to do research on personality and temperament every bird is different and so much fun because they are. I hope you get a baby soon I love baby pics and I would also like to see some of those toy you make I make toys for my guys also

The vitamins should help build her immune system. What a stupid person that guy is I don't let anybody touch my birds if they own birds themselves unless they wash their hands first. I even carry that dry wash disinfecting stuff in my purse just in case there isn't a sink around I always pick up a couple of bottles of the stuff when I'm at the dollar store. I'm always washing my hands Its so important when you have birds

I often thought it would be fun to teach my birds a few tricks like that cockatiel I even bought one of those plastic toys for kids that have the different size rings to place on the pole. all my birds did was chew up the plastic rings. I did teach them how to turn around and I taught Tyco to wave but It seems lately I just play with them and talk with them. maybe I should try some clicker training I hear its great discipline for them and they really look forward to it and love to learn new things.

Don't worry you will be a wonderful mom just be calm and love him and he will love you. thats a wonderful cage you got for him good for you.
-
Apparently Harley is an escape artist and the cage that I'm giving him has the same kind of latches as the cage he has now. I don't want him to escape when I'm not home because he lets all the other birds out and makes a huge mess. I know pad locks can cause metal poisoning so I was wondering if anyone knows of something I can secure the food dish doors and the door so that he won't get sick.
-
Don't worry just leave the door open he will come out when he is ready. how old is yummyumm if he's older love and patients is the key to getting him to love and trust you you'll be just fine and so will he.
-
Thats so grey't I'm glad he is home safe and sound. he really wanted to tell you all about his adventure on the plane didn't he I'm so glad he has decided your the one for him and I look forward to hearing about your first day together. Please don't forget to take some picture to share with us. maybe even a video or 2 would be nice. Have a wonderful time with your new Baby.
-
yes you must keep the pecking order for awhile at least until the new baby is an excepted member of the flock your 1st Grey should always be first first to get fed first to get attention last to be put to bed at night. he must be shown that he is still #1 bird in your eyes and always will be.

€Tomorrow which is Sunday I hope anyway. I only owe another $50 dollars on him and I work tonight so I should make more than enough to finish paying for him. I'm not even close to ready for him. before I go to work at 5pm I have to make some Macaw size toys I went and bought a bunch of ABC children's wooden blocks and I also bought some small dowels to string in between the blocks then I have a 2"x2"x10' piece of spruce that I have to drill holes in and cut into rectangles and squares and I have a couple of nice White Alder branches he can chew I also have a swing that I made a few months ago that I have to hang from the ceiling its a really big one so he should have lots of fun with it. And I still have to clean his cage and and switch Raja into another cage clean Rajas cage so Jeepers has a sleep cage. I have about 6 hours to get it done. I don't think its possible. I guess as long as I get the cages done that's the most important. I'm off work for 4 days after tonight so I can spend those 4 days getting all the toys and swing and stuff ready for him I'm sure Its going to take him a while to get used to how things work at my house. I also have to make a vet appointment. I think he is going to need a beak trim maybe also when He gets Home I'll post some pics so you can tell me what you think. maybe just some stuff to chew on will take care of that. I'll give him a couple of the other birds toys until I get his made they have boxes full but I'm sure with the size of him they will be chewed to nothing in no time.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2009/08/01 11:49

I wonder what she did wrong Tyco never says I love you I think maybe she has said twice in the last 2 years I've had her. This morning she must have told me 10 times Ilove you mom. She must have done something wrong but I haven't found it yet maybe she's figured out I'm getting another bird and she just securing her place in my heart {Love-000200C3}

I would check out last years Baby's I'm sure as long as the breeder has continued spending time and socialized them well you may very well find the perfect bird for your family. I would not hesitate buying a 1 yr old Grey. I'm in the process of buying a 2 yr old Macaw and I consider him/her still a baby and expect the bonding process to be no problem at all.
-
Thats grey't news sounds like Jim is finding his place in his new home I'm so glad things are going so well
-
I was thinking the same thing I've heard of birds being found 4&5 hundred miles from their home.
-
I think your baby just needs to be shown that all kids are not the same as the kids that run around in the pet store the managment should really have a talk with that kids mother and tell her to control her children when there are baby birds around. I think as long as you introduse kids slowly to children and teach children how to behave birds and kids can get along just fine.

I'm sorry to hear that what an awful thing to have happen just before you go on holidays you must be sososo upset. Thank goodness it happened at the vet at least he couldn't be in a better place getting the best of care. Try not to worry to much you can always call everyday to make sure he's doing Ok He's in good hands. please keep us updated and I will be praying that it isn't anything serious. maybe he was scared to be away from you and it was just stress like the DR. said.
-
oh my that's terrible news. I hope everything will be OK. I hope its nothing serious. maybe the Dr. is right when he says its just stress after all the preparations for your holi and the stress he senses from you and being taken to a strange place where he's probably knows he going to have to stay for awhile That's enough to scare any bird. Thank goodness it happened there and not at home it must have been terrifying For you I could just imagine I would be a total basket case.
