  1. Well Mike he obviously favors you over her and there is not much you can do about that but accept it, for they chose who their favorite person is. The decorations and lights could be the difference that is causing him to react this way, sounds like you really have a high strung grey that is bothered more about sudden changes in his environment. Most greys do not like kids very much, they are too loud and quick moving, makes them very nervous so hence they will growl. If you can you really should slowly try to get him used to a towel for there could be times that you will have to towel him for some reason. I have played hide and seek with Josey using a towel and now she is used to being in and around a towel. But now that yours is already scared to death of it, it may not be possible to ever get him used to it but it is worth a try. Mike, I see this is your first post, why don't you introduce yourself in the welcome room and tell us a little more about yourself and Mumbles.
  2. I wish there were more stores like this one scattered over the US, I have to buy most of my stuff online for we have no stores that specialize in birds. The pet stores we have only have a few birds at a time, I could go nuts in your store, BMustee, and spend all day there.
  3. I hope the vet visit goes uneventful and he gets a clean bill of health, no he won't be happy about it but maybe he will be one of the forgiving kind and get over it quickly, my Josey does. Be sure to keep us updated when he gets home and share a picture with us if you can, we would love to see him.
  4. I do allow Josey on my shoulder but it is only at home and with only immediate family there, I feel I have control over my situation and if I were somewhere else besides home it would be different. Yes this is an individual decision and we all make our own and whatever works for each of us is right.
  5. If you don't feel comfortable with her on your shoulder then don't allow it, I do allow my grey to sit on my shoulder but I watch her body language and I have had no problem so far. I have scratches on my shoulders and back from her sharp talons, you would think I had been in a cat fight, but they can be trimmed so they aren't so damaging. Why don't you introduce yourself in the welcome room and tell us a little about yourself and your grey.
  6. Thanks Mark for the information and I have noticed some of what you are talking about and Josey is 18 months of age also. Its funny how so many of us have greys that are so close in age to each other.
  7. HEPA filter sounds like a good idea.
  8. And I know about the goat kids, my daughter had a goat that had babies and they are so adorable when they are little and do some incredible acrobatic moves. Must be a fun place to work.
  9. Maybe sometime when I come down to Florida I will just have to come in and visit this store where you work.
  10. Thanks Mas for the information, I was wondering myself, lets hope they don't use the same formula. Be sure to let us know if you find out anything new.
  11. Hello and welcome to the family, Lalalatv, glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Totoro, what an unusual name, but I like it. You are not bragging are you, of course he is adorable, aren't they all, and especially when they are still babies and yours is no exception. I see you already have the right reading material, a highly recommended book on greys in that first photo. Is this your first grey and first parrot? Please read thru the many threads on various topics for lots of useful information and ask any questions you may have. We will do our best to get an answer and help you in any way we can. Thanks for sharing some photos of Totoro with us we love to admire each other's greys and love the babies.
  12. My sentiments exactly, wish all pet store employees could be a quarter as knowledgeable, caring and loving as you are. You go girl!!!
  13. Well if anybody can it will be you Tracy, and Indy deserves a chance to be all he can be, at least he will have good role models.
  14. Oh Tracy you are such a good woman with a huge heart, I am so proud of you for taking on yet another grey. I know you will have your hands full but this little fella needs your love and attention and if anyone can help him it will be you. How pitiful a life he has had, the poor soul just sitting there on a perch not moving around. I will be thinking about you on Saturday when you go get him and bring him home to your loving arms and keep us updated on him, I really do care. God bless you Tracy for what you are doing and I give you karma for you deserve every one of them.
  15. Hello and welcome to the family, Kerri, glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Ajax. Congrats on adopting a rehome grey, even though he is 18 years old, he will make a fine pet and companion, he just needs the love and attention that you are going to provide. You are so right, his owners are scared of his beak and the bite, but their loss is your gain. Just be patient with him when you bring him home and he will come to trust you in time and I don't really see a problem with Keno except that you should continue to feed, clean his cage and so forth first since he was there first. Keeps him top rung and helps to keep the peace to know that he comes first even though you will love both equally. You will have to quarantine Ajax from Keno for at least 4 to 6 weeks in case either would be harboring any kind of disease or illness, this is just standard procedure when you bring another bird into the flock. Please read thru the many threads on various topics for lots of useful information and if you have specific questions you would like to ask we will do our best to get you an answer and help you in any way we can. When you get some pictures of Ajax would you share one with us we would love to see him and you can post one of Keno in the other birds room if you would like, we would love to see him also.
  16. We have occasional power outages also and I have lit oil lamps and if it is only for a short while it will be ok for the birds. I don't use candles too much and certainly not the scented kind especially if they are out of their cage. The heat being off is not too much of a problem as long as it does not last too long and it is not bitter cold outside. Of course we have 2 fireplaces and a wood stove for backup if we need it, out here in the country where I live it is necessary sometimes. I'm sorry you freaked out over nothing, but we do worry about our loved ones don't we, but now we can laugh about it. Thanks for sharing this story with us.
  17. Thanks for the links, BMustee, I just took the information out of a grey book I had on hand.
  18. Ok Jimmy, some safe trees would be apple, ash, birch, crabapple, dogwood, elm, magnolia, peach, pear, poplar, spruce and willows. Some unsafe or toxic would be cherry, locust, oak, red maple and yew. This is what I found so far, I know there are more safe and unsafe but this will get you started.
  19. In the pharmacy part is where I found it.
  20. Ziggy is right, Goofy is stressed, and he needs to settle in his new home before he will feel more comfortable. But I would not worry about one feather coming out, he is probably going thru a molt so don't worry needlessly. It takes time for him to learn to trust you especially since he is 13 years old and has been taken from the only home he has known so give it time and be very patient with him.
  21. The tone of voice is what we all miss here in the written word, the tone tells us a lot more than the words themselves, glad there are no hard feelings, we all want what is best for our birds and that is the most important.
  22. Well now that you mention it, there is yogurt on the market now that is touted to be good for keeping the intestional tract in good balance and it has to do with the live active cultures that are in the yogurt.
  23. I got mine at a Walmart store, comes in a gal container and was about $5, not too bad.
  24. I'm sure they do, I would too if it gets down to -22, who wouldn't, thanks for sharing that with us.
  25. I haven't heard that about low-fat yogurt but we have some members who would know and maybe we will hear from one of them, I would like to know also.
