  1. Hello and welcome to the family, Dona, glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Danni. In an ideal situation, a grey is not the best choice for a first bird but that is beside the point now that you already have it and you seem to be doing ok so far. You are smart to want to learn all you can so you can properly care for and deal with a grey, not everyone can handle one. Please read thru the many threads on various topics for lots of useful and helpful information. And if you have specific questions just ask and we will do our best to get an answer and help you in any way we can. You say you adopted Danni about 8 months ago, so how old is Danni? If you have a picture of Danni you would like to share with us we would love to see her.
  2. Well they are just like small children and they certainly prefer the paper and boxes to what was actually in them. Don't you worry Mario, I have got my birds taken care of for Christmas but thanks for the reminder to take extra precautions when guests are in the house.
  3. Whatever is on the menu and I haven't planned that out yet, but I don't fix a big meal for Christmas Day just Christmas Eve, thats when the kids and grandkids come and we open presents.
  4. Sandra you bring up a good point and frankly, I am an older person and set in my ways and I ain't gonna change now so take me like I am or ignore it, whichever is easier for you, but I yam what I yam. {Feel-good-0002006E}
  5. Well congrats on having such a good looking bird and I know it cost big bucks to have him say he is in perfect health, but he is worth every penny.
  6. Thanks Kristin for that advice, I have heard that you should pull out a broken blood feather or it will continue to bleed. I haven't been faced with that yet but its good to know if and when the time comes.
  7. Thanks for the update on Makena, Andrew, I saw the post and wondered myself for I have not actually seen Josey's preen gland but glad he is ok, but I understand the vet visit, I would have done the same thing. And thanks to you Mark for the warning about the quick stop, I have that on hand just for such an emergency but now I won't use it, I will use cornstarch.
  8. I seem to remember that in some other threads it was mentioned that cooler water for a shower was preferable to warm water shower, would be more like what they would be accustomed to in their natural habitat, rain is cool water.
  9. Thanks Birdmom for sharing that story of the ice water party at Joannes living room, I might have to try that and see if it gets the same reception that yours did. What a hoot that must have been to watch.:laugh: :laugh:
  10. Bruce your birds do have down vests, think about it!!!
  11. Now thats a nice winter scene at -8, brrrrrrrrrr, are you sure 10 cords of wood will be enough. I know we go thru a bunch of wood, we have a woodstove for backup for we never know when our power is going to be off and we use our fireplace in the family room almost every night.
  12. Hello and welcome to the family, Mike, glad you could join us and I know you are going to enjoy your stay with us. We have a lot of members who are always willing to help out each other whenever we need any help or advice. Please read thru the many threads on various topics for lots of helpful information and don't hesitate to ask any specific questions you may have, we will help you in any way we can. So you mention other birds and you lost your quaker and senegal, but do you still have any of the lovebirds or the sun conure in your household right now? I have a sun conure and she is a real clown but she can be a bit loud, my grey is quiet in comparison.:whistle: If you have any pictures of Mumbles you would like to share with us we would love to see him.
  13. Yes we have mesh grating on the front of the fireplace but neither of my birds goes near it but I think they appreciate the warmth from it as well as we do on a cold winter's night.
  14. They are exactly like small children, they will push you to see how far you will take it and what they can get away with, but you need to let them know you are in control and you won't have as many problems, hopefully. Just like kids, they love to push your buttons.
  15. We have a wood burning fireplace in the family room where my grey is and we have used it with no problem, now I don't know about a gas fireplace as I don't have one.
  16. Tracy, how about Lucky, for he is very lucky to be coming to live with you.
  17. Gosh this is beginning to sound like a broken record, but it is good advice, we all need to be more careful especially on the highways for accidents can and do happen to people every day and we never know when it may be our number that is called. I don't know BadKarma's story but we have all heard Beccy's story and I would hate to have that happen to anyone here on this forum or anywhere for that matter so lets everyone slow down a little and enjoy life and continue to enjoy each other here in our family of grey lovers. I know I would miss any one of you for I love each and every one here. {Love-0002012D}
  18. You are his favorite and that is why he does that, I know this hurts your wife's feelings but this is what happens a lot and you just have to live with it. Maybe she can be the one to give the treats to him, that way it is a little more incentive for him to get to love her a little more, not that he loves her less, he just has a different relationship with her than with you.
  19. A general rule is whatever is comfortable for you is fine for them, I don't think there is a particular temperature that your house has to be for them to be comfortable in it.
  20. Josey goes into her travel cage with no problem and I think it is because she goes with me occasionally to work and so forth. She is used to going places other than the vet's office so it is a pleasant experience and if you do that sort of thing then the carrier is more inviting a place to get into. I would never resort to using gloves to get a hold of her, it would freak her out and I wouldn't blame her, I wouldn't want someone coming at me like that. I too clean her beak off after she has had her morning breakfast, that oatmeal and baby food mixture is messy and I just hold her head and clean it off, she protests a little but otherwise is fine after I finish the job. I may just be lucky and have a grey that is more easy going than some of you have, she is a delight to have.
  21. If it does not have any teflon to it, that is definitely not safe, but don't put the heater too close to the cage and turn it off when she is out so there is no possibility of her getting burned. Why don't you introduce yourself in the welcome room and tell us a little about yourself and Danni.
  22. That one has been around before but it is still funny, thanks Mario for a laugh, we all can use it right now. {Feel-good-0002006E}
  23. Sounds like a good Christmas gift, then you can watch him whenever you want, hope Santa brings it to you.
  24. Jimmy loves to share pictures of Cosmo and he obviously loves him and we love looking at pics here so Jimmy keep em coming.
