  1. Can you call an avian vet and ask? That's the best advice.
  2. Believe me.....I feel horrible..... :( This is something I have always done, cook with a bird on my shoulder.....not because I want to, because one will always fly to my shoulder when I am cooking. Usually I engage them by talking to them as I'm cooking to distract them from wanting to go after what my hands are doing. This usually works well, but tonight, I was distracted and quiet.... Talon has been taught that "HOT" and "DANGER" when said, means she is to stay away. Rikki after a year and a half of hearing this, finally understands......I neglected to say anything when I was cooking the pasta tonight.... Rikki is in bed right now. Some of the skin on her foot is red....I will watch for any signs of it worsening or infection as I worry about. It doesn't appear she is bad enough to see a vet, but if anything changes, we will go immediately. Having the time to look back, I'm quite upset and feel so bad for her. She relies on me to keep her happy and safe.....I failed her and the consequences could have been tragic when I think of the suffering she could have gone thru because of my negligence..... I will not allow her in the kitchen again while I am cooking for her own safety. Thank you everyone for being here for me. No one else who doesn't own birds would ever understand.<br><br>Post edited by: Talon, at: 2010/01/04 03:05
  3. Peek-a-boo!! That was Talon's first word. Curious thread, I look forward to learning more here! B)
  4. I love your bird room! I want one....:woohoo: :woohoo:
  5. I'm glad she is happy! Talon has the same cage for her downstairs play cage. It's a beautiful cage.B)
  6. Lately when I am in the kitchen, Rikki has taken to attacking boxes of pasta or anything that has RED on it. I usually keep a spray bottle near the stove as this keeps her away as she hates it. Tonight I hadn't noticed it was gone.....I had a pan of boiling water on the back burner, Rikki was on my shoulder as usual...(for the last time when I'm cooking). When I poured the pasta into the boiling water, Rikki dove at the box and pasta pouring in, she went into the pan of water!!! I instinctively flipped the pan of water and pasta over to get her out......she flew off to her cage in the darkened room. There was hot water and pasta everywhere in my kitchen, counter, floor, pouring down the stove, etc. She seems to be okay......no blistering of her foot that hit the water. She has some wet spots on her body that still feel pretty warm. I checked her skin and it seems ok. She is a bit subdued right now, she just wants to be with me. I will keep a very close eye on her. She is still flying and had some pasta with us for dinner. What a frightening scare. from now on, she will be put in her cage when I am cooking. We are so lucky it wasn't worse........<br><br>Post edited by: Talon, at: 2010/01/04 01:31
  7. What a beautiful story. Thank you for sharing this with us. A BIG thank you from all the birds you have rescued from terrible situations and shown them the love they deserve. Bless you and Maggie.
  8. Judy, Judy, Judy, don't ignore your hunger, eat 5-6 smaller meals per day. Just watch WHAT you are eating, stay away from refined sugars, starches, etc. Eat more protein, fruits and veggies! DRINK MORE WATER!!!!!! Fun Fact: Do you know if you starve yourself to try and lose weight, your body will actually hold onto the fat and let the muscle go.......you will lose muscle first. :pinch:
  9. I agree with you on the differences of the two species. It's fun to watch and see the difference! Rikki is saying everything I have taught Nilah, Talon my tag is too smart for that nonsense!! :pinch:
  10. As many of you know, I have been teaching Nilah to say, "FIRE FIRE FIRE, WOO WOO WOO!" My nephew is a firefighter and I wanted her to say it when he came over for the holidays. Of course she didn't dissapoint me and says it ALL the time!! Well, now Rikki is yelling, "FIRE!! WOO!" No matter how many times she hears fire fire fire, (we always do it in threes) she will only say it once! I find it interesting. An Amazon says it 3 times, a grey refuses to say it more than once! It really makes me wonder what goes on in that little brain of theirs....
  11. I agree with the others. I would NEVER free fly my birds and risk loosing them.
  12. Dan, I too have brought my 3 birds up as you have Dayo. My oldest son came over my house just the other day, (he hasn't been in my new house since I moved 2 years ago for reasons I won't go into here). His exact words were..."you really are the crazy bird lady!" He couldn't believe how every room had a tree or play stand in it, or things hanging from the ceilings for my birds. 3 potty baskets on my counter. Baskets of toys everywhere, plus 3 large cages! My birds are specified in my will as to who gets who. Having younger children that are brought up with my birds, I like to think that they know nothing different about how to keep parrots healthy and happy. They feel obligated to let them out of their cages as soon as they get home. They don't mind the potty, the birds eating off their plates, chewing homework etc.,...it's a way of life for them. I believe that my birds will continue to live in the lifestyle that they are used to, well, that's my hope anyways... If ever I thought my children wouldn't continue to love my birds the way they are accustomed to within reason, I would be offering them to some members here. Dan, you are to be commended for the parent and family that you have shown us and Dayo. He is one of the luckiest greys out there. You will do right by him as best you can. I wish I was much younger than you, I would take him and give him the life he is used to. God Bless you and Kim for giving Dayo the best life possible. Who ever he ends up with, he will flourish as his roots as a loving bird have been established thanks to you and Kim. You are not making a mistake in treating him as family as opposed to a pet. Trust me on that. The right person will come into your life one day that will love him as he is loved now. When that day comes, you and Kim will know it in your hearts.
  13. OH, I am so sorry to hear this. I don't have any experience with this. Your bird needs to see a vet. Here is a link on others that have had this happen. http://www.greyforums.net/forums/health-room/175208-heavy-metal-poisoning.html#175502 http://www.greyforums.net/forums/health-room/95638-crackers-metal-poisoning.html#95638 good luck and please keep us posted. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
  14. Dan, this is a wonderful link. Thank you for finding this!! So much information on Amazons, I'm loving it. Karma for you!!
  15. It seems I have “ruffled some feathers” in my decision to open up an Amazon Room. That was never my intention to slight anyone or any Other Bird Species. Opening up rooms for every individual bird and finding moderators for each room would be a huge task that would be a bit taxing on the forum software. We have an Other Bird Room and threads can be started for each bird. This site was developed and built by a loving and devoted grey owner who shall remain nameless, (as per his desire). Our focus here has always been our beloved African Greys. When Ceasarsdad and I first joined this forum, there were 3 rooms, 1 admin, no moderators and under 1000 members, we have dedicated our spare time to build this forum into what it is today. There are 20 rooms, with 5332 members. The only thing we have asked of our members are two things: 1. That they remember that this is a family forum,. 2. That we are from all parts of the world and everyone is to be treated with dignity and respect. Ceasarsdad and I have spent countless hours of our lives here for the past 3 years. Many of those hours and work is undetected by most members because we are working behind the scenes. We have used our own personal financial resources to offer gifts to members who won contests and to pay for conference calls to our moderator team from all over the world. We do not own this forum, we donate our time as do all the moderators here. There is no pay for anyone, and the owner of the forum does not generate any income from this site as well. We are here because we love our birds and want nothing but the best for them. Here we have developed a family of members that are full of knowledge and are willing to spend their time helping others give their birds the best life possible. That being said, after all the many hours spent here on my own, and after searching with no success on finding an Amazon Forum, rather than leave this wonderful community and the many friends I have made, I have decided to “reward” my efforts for the past 3 years and open a room that I wanted. To share and learn with the many other amazon owners here. Many of us own both amazons as well as greys and many other bird species. Some of you make think that this room is selfish of me, maybe it is, I have always done what I feel is in the best interest of our members, but this one time, I have opened this room as I see it as a great resource. Those of you that have Amazons, know how different they are from greys, not only in personality, but their requirements and their needs are very different from other birds. So, if I have offended any other bird species or members, I apologize. I was very excited about opening this room, but that excitement is now met with guilt. This is not directed at any one member in particular, I just wanted to clear the air about my reasons for singling out a bird species and opening a room dedicated to them. Sincerely, Penny
  16. Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! Me first!!!  I have had Nilah (YCA) for 2 months. She is 8 months old. She is such fun! She can say, "FIRE FIRE FIRE! WOO WOO WOO WOO!" She yells, "HI BIRDS!" which is what I do whenever I walk in the door. She says "hi Nilah", "Your a good bird", "you okay?" and she laughs like I do. My 2 greys can say what she says and mimic her amazon call. She is incredibly outgoing and such a big show off. When ever a new person comes over, she lights up and shows off all her talents! She was the hit of the party on xmas with the relatives. The only thing she is afraid of is the vacume cleaner. Anything else you show her, she loves instantly! Well, that's all the bragging for the moment...as you can tell, I adore her!
  17. Those are adorable!! Thank you for sharing them with us, Just loved the one on his back. :woohoo: :woohoo:
  18. Ahhhh...yup, a little late I am on the moderator announcement..... Sorry, stopped to eat some dinner with the birds....YUP, they LOVE lasagna! :woohoo:
  19. Please Welcome Moderator......Jayd!!!! Those of you that have read Jayd's posts, know he is a wealth of information when it comes to Amazons. He is always here ready to help and off his expertise when needed. He and his wife Maggie have the kindest hearts in their rescues of birds as well. I am certain he will be a great asset to our moderator team and this room will be full of learning and fun excitement! CONGRATULATIONS JAYD!!!!!
  20. Welcome to Our Amazon Room! Why are we singling out Amazons for a room you might ask, when we already have an Other Birds Room? Well, I will explain….many members here at Greyforums have Amazons in their bird family. Most of you know that I recently adopted a Yellow Crown Amazon (Nilah) when I went to the Bird of Paradise Superstore. After doing lots and lots of searching for info, reading, even looking for forums for Amazons where I could learn as much as possible, I have found that there really is no place out there where you can get anything other than the usual generic information. I have learned more here from the many members that have them already than I have anywhere else. We have such a valuable resource in our forum family from members that have Amazons. I thought why not use our resident “experts?” That being said "WELCOME TO OUR AMAZON ROOM”! A room for sharing, asking questions, offering advice, telling stories, learning about their diets (as they differ from greys), sharing pictures, (you know what show-offs they are), or just chatting about their crazy antics. I am very excited about this room, and look forward to welcoming everyone’s Amazon into our Grey Family! Penny<br><br>Post edited by: Talon, at: 2009/12/28 23:31
  21. AbbysDaddy wrote: I know what you mean about worrying that they fly to the wrong places where they may get burned by lights, etc. I keep a small spray bottle nearby and when they fly to dangerous spots, lightly spray them. My greys HATE being sprayed by the "evil green bottle", and now I only have to pick it up and they fly off or change their minds...
  22. I love the shower picture!! She is a beautiful amazon. Thanks for sharing her with us!
  23. Luvparrots & Katana600, You guys said it perfectly..."it is priceless" to watch the delight in their eyes when they are finally able to fly! And those many tries and clumsy falling are well worth it when the day comes and they master that flight for the very first time....they really do "whoop" with excitement! What a precious moment to witness!
  24. Thank you Dave for taking the time to reply and do it with such class. Yes, the admin like to give members a chance to straighten up. We have been very patient with Jamal and have given him numerous chances to be a contributing respectful member. He has chosen a different path, one that we do not tolerate. He is no longer welcome here. We will watch carefully for any sneaking in.....and that will not be tolerated either. THIS THREAD WILL REMAIN LOCKED AND PLEASE JULKLSY, ON BEHALF OF OUR ADMIN TEAM, ACCEPT OUR APOLOGIZES FOR SUCH AN UNACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE HERE AS A NEW MEMBER I HOPE YOU WILL STAY AND SHARE WITH US YOUR EXPERIENCES AND JOIN OUR FAMILY! B) Penny
  25. I HATE starting this heated topic up again....Wing Clipping....please do a search on it, some of us have very strong opinions on this debate. This is what I think about the subject....clipping a bird that knows the delight of being fully flighted as they were meant to be, thus given their wings...is like cutting off someones legs! That is my own personal opinion....sorry if I sound harsh. I DO understand that others have their own reasons for thinking differently. I just will never agree with them and that is fine. We are all entitled to our own reasons and opinions. But remember, we respect everyone's reasons for doing as they choose.
