  1. Greys can cost anywhere from $600-$1600. You will find a variety of prices depending on what part of the US you are in. I had my bird shipped from FL to MA. There are many possibilities. More important than price, is where the bird comes from. Is the breeder a reputable one, etc. Many things to think about when you get a grey. Is it a rescue and if so, are you prepared to handle it's needs if it has any, do you want a baby? You have lots of time, read thru the many topics here, research and know what you can handle. Best of luck to you. We will help you anyway we can. Just ask away!! Welcome to our family!
  2. I personally would wait if I were you. You will have to prove that your bird is not wild caught and it will have to have a health certificat from your vet. You will have to put your bird in a US quarantine for 3 months. That means for 3 months, your bird will not be living with you. After only having it for a short time before going thru all this, I think it would cause a lot of stress and confusion for your bird. Others will have more advice. This is my opinion, too wait and aquire a bird in the US. One final note, you will pay for the quarantine and I don't think its cheap.
  3. I never knew how Salsa got her name. Thanks for sharing that with us. I LOVE this topic idea!! When we were driving the 5 hour ride home from the bird store with Nilah. We were talking about what we would name Nilah. I have 2 greys, and my son named Talon and Rikki came to me already named. I wanted to be the one who named Nilah since my kids just recently named our new kitten. Our dog came with a name already too... My daighter was on her ipod looking for ideas, I wanted something exotic like in the rain forest. She was suggesting names, Nilah was one of them, it means "one who succeeds and acquires. I LOVED the sound of it, it sounded pretty and sweet for such an exotic and sweet bird. So the decision was made!! Nilah it was!!
  4. This is a very important topic. One that as grey owners, we tend to forget the importance of when allowing our birds to snack on our food through-out the day. Thank you for starting this thread as an important reminder. Nilah is 9 months old and weighs 384 grams as of 12/19. She is due to be weighed again. You are right, they will eat anything!!:pinch:
  5. What great pictures!!! Thank you for sharing them with us. (Although, I think crazed is the word!!!):silly:
  6. Hi everyone. Sorry for not updating sooner. It was a long work day. When I got Rikki up this morning, she seemed happy. She really wasn't too hungry tho...she was talking. When I held her, the bottom of her Left foot felt really hot, that's the one she keeps holding up. I felt bad I had to go to work and couldn't stay come with her. when my daughter got home from school, I called to check on her, she thought Rikki seemed ok. When I got home from work, she was glued to me. She kept on my shoulder and when I would sit still, she would go to sleep. She ate dinner with us and she continually kept fluffing up her feathers, I knew she was uncomfortable. I just put her to bed early as she was so tired. I feel so bad for her, she really seems to not be feeling too well tonight....I will see how she is in the am. Her left wing has some messed up feathers from where it went into the water.... :( Thank you to all for your kind words and concern. It really is nice to have this family to share our ups and downs with. Others who understand..... I will update again tomorrow. Unfortunately, Monday and Tuesdays are my long work days.....
  7. Can you call an avian vet and ask? That's the best advice.
  8. Believe me.....I feel horrible..... :( This is something I have always done, cook with a bird on my shoulder.....not because I want to, because one will always fly to my shoulder when I am cooking. Usually I engage them by talking to them as I'm cooking to distract them from wanting to go after what my hands are doing. This usually works well, but tonight, I was distracted and quiet.... Talon has been taught that "HOT" and "DANGER" when said, means she is to stay away. Rikki after a year and a half of hearing this, finally understands......I neglected to say anything when I was cooking the pasta tonight.... Rikki is in bed right now. Some of the skin on her foot is red....I will watch for any signs of it worsening or infection as I worry about. It doesn't appear she is bad enough to see a vet, but if anything changes, we will go immediately. Having the time to look back, I'm quite upset and feel so bad for her. She relies on me to keep her happy and safe.....I failed her and the consequences could have been tragic when I think of the suffering she could have gone thru because of my negligence..... I will not allow her in the kitchen again while I am cooking for her own safety. Thank you everyone for being here for me. No one else who doesn't own birds would ever understand.<br><br>Post edited by: Talon, at: 2010/01/04 03:05
  9. Peek-a-boo!! That was Talon's first word. Curious thread, I look forward to learning more here! B)
  10. I love your bird room! I want one....:woohoo: :woohoo:
  11. I'm glad she is happy! Talon has the same cage for her downstairs play cage. It's a beautiful cage.B)
  12. Lately when I am in the kitchen, Rikki has taken to attacking boxes of pasta or anything that has RED on it. I usually keep a spray bottle near the stove as this keeps her away as she hates it. Tonight I hadn't noticed it was gone.....I had a pan of boiling water on the back burner, Rikki was on my shoulder as usual...(for the last time when I'm cooking). When I poured the pasta into the boiling water, Rikki dove at the box and pasta pouring in, she went into the pan of water!!! I instinctively flipped the pan of water and pasta over to get her out......she flew off to her cage in the darkened room. There was hot water and pasta everywhere in my kitchen, counter, floor, pouring down the stove, etc. She seems to be okay......no blistering of her foot that hit the water. She has some wet spots on her body that still feel pretty warm. I checked her skin and it seems ok. She is a bit subdued right now, she just wants to be with me. I will keep a very close eye on her. She is still flying and had some pasta with us for dinner. What a frightening scare. from now on, she will be put in her cage when I am cooking. We are so lucky it wasn't worse........<br><br>Post edited by: Talon, at: 2010/01/04 01:31
  13. What a beautiful story. Thank you for sharing this with us. A BIG thank you from all the birds you have rescued from terrible situations and shown them the love they deserve. Bless you and Maggie.
  14. Judy, Judy, Judy, don't ignore your hunger, eat 5-6 smaller meals per day. Just watch WHAT you are eating, stay away from refined sugars, starches, etc. Eat more protein, fruits and veggies! DRINK MORE WATER!!!!!! Fun Fact: Do you know if you starve yourself to try and lose weight, your body will actually hold onto the fat and let the muscle go.......you will lose muscle first. :pinch:
  15. I agree with you on the differences of the two species. It's fun to watch and see the difference! Rikki is saying everything I have taught Nilah, Talon my tag is too smart for that nonsense!! :pinch:
  16. As many of you know, I have been teaching Nilah to say, "FIRE FIRE FIRE, WOO WOO WOO!" My nephew is a firefighter and I wanted her to say it when he came over for the holidays. Of course she didn't dissapoint me and says it ALL the time!! Well, now Rikki is yelling, "FIRE!! WOO!" No matter how many times she hears fire fire fire, (we always do it in threes) she will only say it once! I find it interesting. An Amazon says it 3 times, a grey refuses to say it more than once! It really makes me wonder what goes on in that little brain of theirs....
  17. I agree with the others. I would NEVER free fly my birds and risk loosing them.
  18. Dan, I too have brought my 3 birds up as you have Dayo. My oldest son came over my house just the other day, (he hasn't been in my new house since I moved 2 years ago for reasons I won't go into here). His exact words were..."you really are the crazy bird lady!" He couldn't believe how every room had a tree or play stand in it, or things hanging from the ceilings for my birds. 3 potty baskets on my counter. Baskets of toys everywhere, plus 3 large cages! My birds are specified in my will as to who gets who. Having younger children that are brought up with my birds, I like to think that they know nothing different about how to keep parrots healthy and happy. They feel obligated to let them out of their cages as soon as they get home. They don't mind the potty, the birds eating off their plates, chewing homework etc.,...it's a way of life for them. I believe that my birds will continue to live in the lifestyle that they are used to, well, that's my hope anyways... If ever I thought my children wouldn't continue to love my birds the way they are accustomed to within reason, I would be offering them to some members here. Dan, you are to be commended for the parent and family that you have shown us and Dayo. He is one of the luckiest greys out there. You will do right by him as best you can. I wish I was much younger than you, I would take him and give him the life he is used to. God Bless you and Kim for giving Dayo the best life possible. Who ever he ends up with, he will flourish as his roots as a loving bird have been established thanks to you and Kim. You are not making a mistake in treating him as family as opposed to a pet. Trust me on that. The right person will come into your life one day that will love him as he is loved now. When that day comes, you and Kim will know it in your hearts.
  19. OH, I am so sorry to hear this. I don't have any experience with this. Your bird needs to see a vet. Here is a link on others that have had this happen. http://www.greyforums.net/forums/health-room/175208-heavy-metal-poisoning.html#175502 http://www.greyforums.net/forums/health-room/95638-crackers-metal-poisoning.html#95638 good luck and please keep us posted. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
  20. Dan, this is a wonderful link. Thank you for finding this!! So much information on Amazons, I'm loving it. Karma for you!!
  21. It seems I have “ruffled some feathers” in my decision to open up an Amazon Room. That was never my intention to slight anyone or any Other Bird Species. Opening up rooms for every individual bird and finding moderators for each room would be a huge task that would be a bit taxing on the forum software. We have an Other Bird Room and threads can be started for each bird. This site was developed and built by a loving and devoted grey owner who shall remain nameless, (as per his desire). Our focus here has always been our beloved African Greys. When Ceasarsdad and I first joined this forum, there were 3 rooms, 1 admin, no moderators and under 1000 members, we have dedicated our spare time to build this forum into what it is today. There are 20 rooms, with 5332 members. The only thing we have asked of our members are two things: 1. That they remember that this is a family forum,. 2. That we are from all parts of the world and everyone is to be treated with dignity and respect. Ceasarsdad and I have spent countless hours of our lives here for the past 3 years. Many of those hours and work is undetected by most members because we are working behind the scenes. We have used our own personal financial resources to offer gifts to members who won contests and to pay for conference calls to our moderator team from all over the world. We do not own this forum, we donate our time as do all the moderators here. There is no pay for anyone, and the owner of the forum does not generate any income from this site as well. We are here because we love our birds and want nothing but the best for them. Here we have developed a family of members that are full of knowledge and are willing to spend their time helping others give their birds the best life possible. That being said, after all the many hours spent here on my own, and after searching with no success on finding an Amazon Forum, rather than leave this wonderful community and the many friends I have made, I have decided to “reward” my efforts for the past 3 years and open a room that I wanted. To share and learn with the many other amazon owners here. Many of us own both amazons as well as greys and many other bird species. Some of you make think that this room is selfish of me, maybe it is, I have always done what I feel is in the best interest of our members, but this one time, I have opened this room as I see it as a great resource. Those of you that have Amazons, know how different they are from greys, not only in personality, but their requirements and their needs are very different from other birds. So, if I have offended any other bird species or members, I apologize. I was very excited about opening this room, but that excitement is now met with guilt. This is not directed at any one member in particular, I just wanted to clear the air about my reasons for singling out a bird species and opening a room dedicated to them. Sincerely, Penny
  22. Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! Me first!!!  I have had Nilah (YCA) for 2 months. She is 8 months old. She is such fun! She can say, "FIRE FIRE FIRE! WOO WOO WOO WOO!" She yells, "HI BIRDS!" which is what I do whenever I walk in the door. She says "hi Nilah", "Your a good bird", "you okay?" and she laughs like I do. My 2 greys can say what she says and mimic her amazon call. She is incredibly outgoing and such a big show off. When ever a new person comes over, she lights up and shows off all her talents! She was the hit of the party on xmas with the relatives. The only thing she is afraid of is the vacume cleaner. Anything else you show her, she loves instantly! Well, that's all the bragging for the moment...as you can tell, I adore her!
  23. Those are adorable!! Thank you for sharing them with us, Just loved the one on his back. :woohoo: :woohoo:
  24. Ahhhh...yup, a little late I am on the moderator announcement..... Sorry, stopped to eat some dinner with the birds....YUP, they LOVE lasagna! :woohoo:
  25. Please Welcome Moderator......Jayd!!!! Those of you that have read Jayd's posts, know he is a wealth of information when it comes to Amazons. He is always here ready to help and off his expertise when needed. He and his wife Maggie have the kindest hearts in their rescues of birds as well. I am certain he will be a great asset to our moderator team and this room will be full of learning and fun excitement! CONGRATULATIONS JAYD!!!!!
