Jayd is right. It doesn't matter what type of bird you get, they may or may not get along....BUT they will tolerate each other and it will take time. I have a timneh 4 1/2 years old, a congo, 4 1/2 yrs old ,and amazon 1 yr old, and 2 parakeets. The 3 larger birds are all girls and I like it that way. I don't have to deal with a male bird and 2 females. I think this will help as they get older. Do they get along? Yes, but it took time for the congo, she got down right angry for the first 2-3 months, now she is very happy, settled and tolerates the newcomer. Do they get along well enough to play and preen? NO on the preening, but the 2 greys will play chase and tag by flying and yelling while they chase each other as they fly thru the house. ( what fun to watch) My amazon and timneh will sit on the same perch as long as their is no less than 12 inches between them... But to answer your question, whether they will get along and tolerate each other depends on you, your attitude with them, the attention they each receive, ( my 3 are all out at the same time, I make it a point to always acknowledge them by name when I talk to them as I come and go throughout the day) and whether or not YOU have the time for them. As you know they are a lot of work. I am sure you will make the right decision when the time is right, but as Jill says, they get harder as they enter their teens...:pinch:

Dear Spock & Issac, We wonder if you know how much you make our mum smile and giggle when she comes here daily to read this thread. :cheer: :cheer: She tries to tell us what you write, but of course we already know cause we sneak peeks on her laptop when she's not downstairs watching us. :silly: We even know her password as she types it in when we are perched over her shoulder on the couch. We agree with you guys, trying to figure these parronts out is impossible!! What goes on in those heads of theirs??? What ever it is, I know she says that you guys think and act just like us....how could that be....we don't even know each other!!! Oops, gotta go, she's coming!!!!!! :pinch: Talon, Rikki, Nilah<br><br>Post edited by: Talon, at: 2010/03/27 03:26

What a brave soldier you've raised. You and Maggie should be proud!! I am so sorry for his injuries...I hope all turns out well from his surgery. Tell him THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for protecting and fighting for his country. My thoughts and prayers are with him for a speedy and full recovery.

Hi Jill, Just have to chime in here. I went thru the same thing with Talon last year. She was always so good about going into her play cage when I had to leave for work. Then one day...she said, NOPE! and off she flew. I too would spend 15-20 minutes trying to get her into her cage. She did as Harvey did. I tried everything, I would get so frustrated and mad at her... BUt then I quickly reminded myself, she's only a bird, don't reinforce this behavior, she doesn't really think like I do. We have a large opening in the room, and 2 french doors on the other end. I would close the doors, and I would have to hang a sheet with thumbtacks over the other opening to keep her in the room. Well, all she did is fly around the room. Once I calmed down, I would get a NEW treat, and get her to step up. I would talk to her about something in her cage and I would move gently, but fast.. Just trying to occupy her mind so she wouldn't think to fly off. This behavior went on for 2-3 months. then POOF! it was gone! I had to keep telling myself it was just a stage...it will pass...and it did! Hang in there. Just make sure that you haven't made any changes in his cage that he may be frightened of. Best of luck to you! B)

Thanks crossfit. I will call too, but won't be able to until later in the week.

They do have a policy for exotic pets.......you have o call to get a quote.

That's a good point you make. However, I have 3 VERY needy parrots...needy in they'd prefer TOYS to health insurance.... Just not sure I could put enough away for them vs health ins. I really need to research this more. Thanks for the good idea, it's worth pondering........

Having 5 birds, I am looking into insurance. I would like well bird coverage as well as accident/illness. Does anyone here in the US know if the prices VPI have are per bird vs. one price for how ever many birds you have?

That's so cute! All my 3 LOVE their chicken bones!! Thanks for sharing these pics with us.

Sounds like Isaac is doing great!

WOW! Those are really nice! Thanks for sharing them with us.

Jay & Maggie, I hope and pray that this ne change in his diet helps. Peanut butter has lots of fat in it. I would put it on toast and feed it to him. Cut it up into little squares for him. Spock is in my prayers.....

Dan, you are soooo right! I feel guilty when I work all day and then go out for dinner at night....you can feel your heart strings being pulled. I know I am anxious to get home and spend time with them when that happens.

Oh you poor thing! I know how you feel, I felt that way when we first got Talon. I don't live alone, but I do have to leave them in their cages while we are all gone for the day. I usually put the tv on( nick jr.) or the bird sitter dvd for them. I also give them extra treats/ veggies, fruit, etc. plus when they are sleeping, I pack up their toy buckets with wrapped surprises so they have something to do. Sometimes I put a bowl of water with a small rubber duck in it on the bottom of their cage to play in if they desire. I say be back soon as I am putting them in their cages and they always get a noodle treat when they go in as I am saying it. One of my greys will repeat it back to me. Their days are varied, sometimes they are in their cages all day, others they are out all day. I have found that they actually like their alone, quiet time very much. When they are out, they can get cranky and start to get into trouble. So, I wouldn't worry, your bird will thrive as you are giving him exactly what he needs. Just relax and know that he needs his alone time to nap also. B)<br><br>Post edited by: Talon, at: 2010/03/04 20:53

We all know how much Amazon LOVE to sing. I am curious as to what songs you have taught your Amazon? Nilah sings, La la la la la la la in the scales. I WOULD LOVE SOME NEW IDEAS FOR SONGS!!!
-
Wow! I never knew they were so extinct. Karma for you Jayd and for taking time from your precious flock to teach us so much! :cheer:

Great idea Jooles!!! WHO HAS TIME FOR OTHER INTERESTS AFTER ALL THE BIRD CARE??????????            Seriously tho, My "other" interests besides my birds, cat, dog and horses are: Running, weightlifting at the gym and shooting at Smith & Wesson. I take my 15 year old son there every Sunday. Can't wait to hear everyone else's interests!

hmmm....interesting opinions. Knowing what I know now, if I could only have ONE bird, it would be an amazon. Although I LOVE my 2 greys to death. I really enjoy the 3 different personalities and differences. Having a tag, cag and amazon, all 3 are quite different. As I told my 10 year old one morning as I was at the kitchen table feeding my flock oatmeal and peanut butter toast... "I have 3 birds too many, but I wouldn't have it any other way!" :cheer:

IT'S GOOD TO SEE YOU BACK. Remember, when your grey drives you crazy, it is usually just a stage they are going thru just like children. All greys need the largest cage you can afford...
-
I would recommend you buy the largest cage you can afford. There are plenty of inexpensive cages out there that will ship to you for free. Best to measure the space and go from there. I have bought 3 cages in the last 2 years for 3 of my birds, most are 300-500 dollars.

I had an impromptu visit at the ex's house today while Talon was in the car with me. It's a long story, I will try to make it much shorter... Some of you may know that Talon was originally my oldest son's bird. He is now 21. When I divorced, I took Talon with me since I did most of the everyday care for her. She lived with our family for the first 2 years of her life in the house my ex and oldest son still live in. Then 4 of us left and moved into another house which she has lived in for the past 2 1/2 years. My oldest son stayed with his father, Talon went with me. So today, as I was driving home, my other son was walking home from school in the rain, (it's his day to spend with his father), I picked him up and drove him to the ex's. I had Talon in the car, so I thought I would bring him inside to see my oldest son who doesn't get to see her very often. It was quite interesting to see how she reacted to the house she knew as her home for 2 years......at first she looked around like she didn't know where she was, then as she started recognizing things, she would fly to her usual spots. She was quite happy to see my son and tried to fly up to his room to see if it still looked the same. She used to sleep in his room. He took her, she went right to the window that she loved to look out. She was looking everywhere......I could actually see her look at things, seem unsure, then see her look change as she began to recognize and remember things. We took her through most of the house, she played in the bathroom just like she always did when I was in the shower, did all the things she used to. She got really excited when she was in the kitchen as that is the one room that didn't have any changes in it. After about an hour, we took her home. She was happy to be home, but talked up a storm when she got home. I always wondered what would happen if I took her back there, would it upset her, confuse her? But it seemed like she enjoyed the visit, but was happy to be back home with us and her flock! Just wanted to share with you. :cheer:

I took Talon out for a drive just today when I went to pick up my son from school. She goes in an adventure pak to the car, then I let her sit on my shoulder while I drive. She loves it!! It's only a short trip, I drive extra slow and careful. She whistles and peeps and makes all kinds of sounds!! I have always taken my birds separately for short car rides just so they will get used to it and not freak out if they have to go to the vet.
