Wait for an invite before petting

You dont have to have a big house to practice flying. Your son should send off, you should receive. Even if your bird can fly! Thats just part of your bird learning... " we are a family!" We work together! I am so happy Sophie loves us all for different reasons, steps up to all. I am always the person " bad news.... this is what Rom wants". Sophie knows I make the final decisions, and we have had many battles! I am also the person that Sophie calls for when she feels " threatened!" Nancy -
There are so many African Greys out there that need forever homes. I personally got Sophie at age two.I personally could not get another Grey, even though my heart is opened to more. My kids and I have discussed it, and we realize it would not be best for Sophie. It would stress her. I am open to another dog..... fighting that pull! Nancy

Bigwick70... LOVED the video of chicken quacking! As far as them answering in " what"? That is one of Sophie's favorite words answering in human form. She immitates kids to perfection to the point, when I yelled " dinner", kids said individually " coming"! They never came. I got so mad! This was a pattern, and I really got annoyed. I confronted them both one day. I had a sit down... explained I work a ton of hours, and work hard to have dinner on the table. I am disappointed that you guys can't respect me to NOT show up on time for dinner when I call you! They both had no idea what I was talking about! I realized immediately that Sophie was the one responding to coming for dinner. ( I have less than 20% hearing in my right ear now, so I can't tell where sound comes from).DAMN my smart girl! ( Sophie always showed up for dinner on time!) Sophie eats with us. Nancy

Happy anniversary!I normally would have said " a match made by heaven",.... but I must say " a match made by you!" Nancy

Many breeders do. Let her grow her feathers back and learn how to fly. Baby needs to develop chest muscles. I am all for a baby learning how to fly, but in the next breath, I am all for " trimming" feathers back, when the baby is out of control! I am NEVER for clipping! When entering terrible two's, I am not opposed with letting my trimmer know what my goals are! My trimmer could trim them to fly anywhere I wanted! I wanted Sophie to fly within two rooms. He delivered. She could fly, but took time to hang with me and learn things. I always wanted my birds to have " free flight", " free cages", but it was a slow process. Nancy

Thank you so much! I have been stressing about it as my oven gets dirtier! Nancy

Please find a birdstore that can help you with a good pellet and seed mix. Adding a good source of fruits and veggies, is also important. Mostly veggies. Nancy

"Terrible Twos" to Sexual Maturity and Beyond.
kins2321@yahoo.com replied to JeffNOK's topic in The GREY Lounge
JeffNOK... great question! I hope many can help! We went thru the terrible two's but never suffered with hormonal surges! I had proof she was a girl, but never saw hormonal changes like I did with my Amazon.I find her to be amazing around 3 and 1/2. I have never had to look back. She continues to be amazing. Nancy -

How old is Wilbur? I watched the video. BEAUTIFUL feathers, by the way. His stance in the cage was guarded, but his eyes weren't pinning. Makes me think Wilbur trusts you so far, but that mutual trust needs to continue to grow. You are doing an excellent job! Love how your son has bonded. Mine did too. Some kids are scared, some not.My kids picked her up from day one, never hesitated. Neither ever got a bite. Just a suggestion... have your son pickup wilbur, then practice flying " away" from cage. Your son to " send off", you to receive. I am a firm believer of practicing things away, if not " off" the cage.( door). You should be proud that you can put your hand in the cage! Most cannot.Greys are very territorial... so try and remove that stress by practicing and teaching away from cage. Nancy -
I have no clue what to say! I'm lucky that we have great water here. My biggest concern would be sulfur. Nancy

I need to clean my oven. I've received posts in the past, wrote it down, but lost it! I have a self cleaning oven, but can't do it due to the fumes.Does anyone have a good recipe that is natural? I am not usually crazy with " all natural", but cleaning an oven, is a must. Nancy

LOL about the bleach stains! I get them also when cleaning pool and adding chlorine! While both my kids have asthma, I don't let them add the chlorine into the pool. Another inhalent, they don't need to be exposed too. I just treat Sophie as an asthmatic, as her lungs are as sensitive as the kids. Nancy

If surgery is the only option, I personally would do it! Post operative care will involve pain management, surgical wound monitoring. Its not that hard and I will be glad to help you! Nancy

We have a family room that is like a " football field!" WAY too big... but it sure is a great room to practice flying! One person to send off for flight, the other to receive. We practiced this with Kiki, but eventually had to practice with Nancy Sophie, as she couldn't fly when we got her at age two. Sometimes they over shot and crashed into the window. I put silly decals in the window, for them to figure out " this is the end zone!" They actually made a difference!

12 weeks is very young. Think of a newborn infant, that can't even hold up their head. A 12 week old,, is very clumsy, has minimal perception of space... will crash if can even fly. I don't know, since I got Sophie at two. I'm just answering on when I had a 16 week old Amazon! Kiki our Amazon, also got in trouble, while climbing in her cage, she was so awkward!!!!!I think most birds are pretty similiar in the beginning. Satisfy the oral stage, make a plan for diet.Safety, should be on your radar. Plug electrical outlets, remove cords that they can choke on. Enjoy your baby! Next on your radar should be the plan to practice " stepup". Its a must. I am not big on putting my fingers in their cage. I always practiced stepup off their door.Of course now I can put my fingers in their cage, don't even have to say " stepup"... but I always respected their space in the beginning and did all my training " away" from the cage. I'll go with you! LOL! I'll NEVER give up my chlorax! I've given up on many things, but a clean bathroom with window opened and door closed, has never hurt my gang. They live to tell another tail, and boy, can Sophie tell a tail! Nancy

It is so exciting when your baby finally has a break!Escher deserves it.I can't wait to hear stories about his new nails and what he does with them!!! Nancy

Sophie LOVED it! Maybe because I thought it was so funny, but she made me repeat it three times. I laughed each time. Nancy

First off... , if the organs are " squished", sounds like a mass that is doing this. My first thought, would be a biopsy of mass, then make decisions! My heart goes out to you! Remember, benign cysts or tumors, can do the same. Nancy

Let Gabby take the lead with your new baby. Don't worry about bacteria. If they are enjoying being together, let them! Let Gabby be mom, friend, whatever role baby chooses her to be.Make sure you take them out separately, to bond with you.Be careful, that Gabby will be protective, and not want you to be with baby. You need to establish, you are the "BIG MAMA", and you will keep them both safe, and meet both of their needs. Its all about trust.... starting with Gabby. Nancy

I am a chlorox hound for boys bathroom. I cleAn their bathroom and open window. ( of course close the bathroom).Sophie doesn't even know that bathroom exists! Nancy

Muse... NOT the THING! Its amazing how confident they can be, then encounter the one true thing that freaks them out. Its usually something simple, that we humans get confused why they are afraid! Sophie does that, and I just offer her my support, she usually prevails. Many times, I just remove what she is afraid of, and she gives me her cluck of approval! I also give her " my cluck of disapproval", and let her know she should have given what she was afraid of, a chance. Of course, her feeling of safety, is MOST important, so she knows I will get rid of anything she fears. Nancy
