  1. Yes... you can have birds that dont live together. I have had birds that have figured it out, for past ten years. They have figured it out....do well, with personal choices. Nancy
  2. Thank you : bam bam! We hope new parents are welcomed to our enviroment! Nancy
  3. You have asked excellent questions! Follow your heart... as I did! Make your own decisions! Observe their behavior together. Let them choose. Sophie, Kiki and Sunny, worked it out. They made their own decisions! Nancy
  4. Sophie is very comfortable with any of us, going on vacation. We tend to alternate. She always has someone at home. Nancy
  5. Buddy, will show you the way! Leave the door open, encourage him. I always follow the advice I received... " Listen to your bird!" Sometimes, I cringe... remind myself... "listen!" I continue to follow the advice. Nancy
  6. We provide a diet of pellets, fruits and veggies, from the birdstore. In addition, we provide a diet of fresh fruits and veggies. Alternate their diet of fresh fruits and veggies. They pick and choose what they like. They eat well, so don't go crazy about what they pick and choose for natural healthy living. We dont deal with diet, for behavior changes. Food is food. NEVER is part, of behavioral modification Nancy
  7. I would be glad to help! I have three birds of different origins. They all get along. Nancy
  8. Bedtime, is bedtime! While we have " open cage", if they walk out past 8pm... I put them back in their cage. Tell them... Shhhh... bedtime! I don't cover their cage, but their room is dark, and their is no stimulation. My birds are all ten years old. Bedtime, was established eight years ago. They go to bed, at 8pm. Nancy
  9. I hope it works! I'm here to support you. Nancy
  10. Wow! I'm lucky that Sophie has survived plucking, doesn;t go crazy to pluck, or is itching to get a bath! NOT! She will NEVER desire a shower( I wish!) Sophie will never pluck, will never shower.I do have issues with Sophie. But not the basic concerns. Nancy
  11. Sunny adopted after many years of abuse. ( not sure how old he was) He would attack people's jugular. He loved my son Ryan. Once he came home, I got sick with pneumonia. Cage was open, I was sick. He came out quickly, as he was worried about me. We bonded quickly. Nancy
  12. Unfortunately... you are responsible for dinner with a possible " cost", to the bird enviroment. NOT worth it!D on't try to establish something, that doesn't exist! My family has understood for years! ( i'm sure they didn't get it, but understood!) Once I did have dinner, or my family visit, Sophie was excited to meet them. They were scared at first, but eventually, they got to know Sophie. They now know her so well, its not an issue anymore. Sophie has been my baby for years. We balanced it out. I was always the youngest that "LOVED" animals. They learned to accept what was important to me. They like Sophie so much now, they come to visit often. They don't fear her, nor do they freak out if they find Kiki sleeping on their shoulder. ( kiki really likes my brother-in-law) Nancy
  13. Moths always thrive in homes, where there are healthy grain food available. ( guess thats good we have healthy food!) I also follow the freezer idea. Just got done battling the fruit flys! I won! YAY! Nancy
  14. all greys speak at different times, just like children. We adopted Sophie at age two. She came from a loving family, but her vocabulary was minimal. She is 12 now, speaks so well. Lots of phrases and words. Mimics everyone and everything. Nancy
  15. That is amazing!!!!! Way to go Timmy. He is certainly very smart. Sophie has been " perfecting" the song... Take me out to the ballgame... for years. I LOVE when she improvises! LOL Nancy
  16. Sophie of course, routinely farts, snore, burps and sneezes. Once in awhile, she will increase her sneezing and start wheezing. As I work alot... I immediately know when one of the kids are sick. They both have asthma. They won't tell me they have been wheezing. Sophie lets me know. She is better than a doctor! Once their sick... within three days of the cold, they will either get VERY sick, or be fine. Sometimes they need to go on steroids. She lets me know to pay closer attention! God bless her imitating! Nancy
  17. We got our sunconure first. A rescue. He fell in love with my son at daycare, hated everyone else. Then came Kiki, our orangewinged Amazon. He picked my other son. I felt left out, got Sophie our grey at age two. They all are unique in their own way. They seem to " balance", the entire avian family. Kiki is the " tester", for all new fruits and veggies. Noone will try anything, until she approves. She is the best flyer.... they all only attempt to fly when they see her do it first. Kiki test all new toys first as well. If she likes it... they all like it! Even though it sounds like she should be the leader, Sophie my grey is. Sunny the conure and Kiki, are in love, so they are together alot. When Sophie got her new cage and hated it... they let her come live with them! Oh brother.... three birds in one cage is crazy! Other cages are there... they just gather dust. I think two greys, unless they are a bonded pair, can develop a " war", struggling for control. I am lucky the three different species temperment, interests, balanced out. Nancy
  18. I tend to offer toast, that is buttered, sugarsnap pea's, green beans, grapes,, apples and pears, right off in the morning. They can all be quite demanding for fruits and veggies, Nancy
  19. I have a sunconure, Amazon and grey, that all get along quite well. Open cages. Sophie, our grey, rules, but is fair, with her decisions, for entire bird kingdom. While they have three cages, I find them all the time, living in one cage. Nancy
  20. Wow! Sounds like alot of greys bite! I would LOVE to join. Nancy
  21. They are sooo messy! We all do different things! I put newspaper at the bottom of their cage. I also put painters plastic, underneath their cages and gym. I tend to clean cages quicker than I change the plastic. We clean together. Kids are involved, and we attack the mess together. Nancy
  22. You will never forget about Cody. Don't even try.He is a permament part of your life. Remember everything about him. Think about things he did that were so fun! Share your stories with us. We care, and have been there. Nancy
  23. I am deaf in my right ear. It is hard for me to distinguish sound, where it is coming from. Sophie imitates all of us so well, I don't know if kids are responding, or Sophie. She imitates everyone to such perfection, kids know, with my hearing deficit, they need to respond in person. She's that good! Nancy
  24. You obviously have never met Sophie! LOL While Sophie call me " Rom", instead of mom, she certainly lets me know, when I don't meet her needs. I have to remind her sometimes, " I need to let pups out!" She tells Ollie and Zoey,,, " go out now. Time to pee!". She knows exactly what she is saying. Occassionally, Ollie escapes under her cage. She's okay with that, saying..." Ollie... do you want a peanut?" If he pee's on her plastic under the cage, she totally freaks! Screams Ollie! Ollie! Outside now! He runs away. Sophie rules! Birds, dogs, whatever.Sophie is our queen. We're okay with that. Nancy
  25. Just joined this site. I am lucky to be the proud owner of an " oranged wing Amazon," as well as a grey. Kiki, our Amazon is eight years old. Sophie. our grey, is ten years old. There is a HUGE difference! An orange wing Amazon, is not a great talker. Screams at the top of her lungs between 3-4pm. LOVES showers, is more adventurous then all our birds, loves toys. LOVES trying new diet, especially fruits and veggies. She is the " tester", for all new fruits and veggies. She is also the best flyer. Sophie, our grey, is a GREAT talker, has the ability to " think", up to the age of a five year old. She imitates Kiki, ( really annoys her)... My son, is Kiki's owner, Sophie, the grey, is mine. I feed all of them. I love them both. While I love our Amazon, there is NO comparison between the two. While they balance each other out, in how different they are, I would NEVER think of choosing an Amazon over a grey. There is NO comparison. A Grey, is amazing! I have to remind my grey.... NOT to make fun of Kiki! ( she stops!) You need to decide, do you want the bird with " intelligence", more work as a baby, or the bird that is more into toys, diet and adventure. I'm lucky that I have both in my life Nancy
