Although Parrot Palooza takes place on the same weekend as my beloved New York Comicon, I still plan on going on the Saturday. Is anyone on here going? I'm excited to see some CAGs and TAGs up close in the same place! I also wouldn't mind saying hi to any East Coast grey parronts.

Some photos of dayo outside today after his shower.

Such beautiful pictures! -
Not only repetition (which is important) but also feeling! I have found with my birds that when you say something with enthusiasm (such as the curse you let out when you stub your toe), that's what the bird is going to want to copy.

The only bird I've heard of that with is Cockatiels. It is said that if you teach a tiel to whistle, it will NEVER talk. Mine does both with joy. Simon will talk if/when he wants to talk, I believe.

Almost became a grey companion... Rehomer backs out...

You have a senegal, right? If there's one thing I know about senegals it's that they are VERY possessive! I can't have my sennie and my tiel out at the same time, due to the fact that Jon, my sennie, would likely attack him. If you get a Grey I think you need to consider the possibility of having to giving them their separate out time. -
Spring Chicken! I remember when cell phones were just used for talking and texting!

I've heard of CAGs with red factor, but not TAGs That's really interesting, though! I can't wait to see pics! I wanted to mention that I don't know if it's because your TAG is young, but I FREAKING love the white coloration on her face. It's amazingly beautiful, and works well with the contrast of her beak coloration.

Does that apply to just AG's or African parrots in general? My Senegal takes a bath in his water dish every morning, and gets really excited when the misting bottle comes out! My Cockatiel from Australia on the other hand hates water, and screams when he sees the misting bottle.

Thank you for taking this Grey into your life! I do thin k a week is too short of a time to find the owner, although I think you guys are pretty set in keeping him now! Do you have pics of the cage? I have found that this forum has an amazing wealth of information.

Hello everyone, I fancy myself a bit of a writer (in case you couldn't tell from my overly flowery posts) and would love if perhaps a few people with AG's could tell me a few behaviors. I don't have an AG yet, but I find them so inspiring. I have read quite a few stories on here about hot headed AG's, but the one I'm writing about has a disabled woman companion. This AG is very gentile with her....but especially ferocious against anyone that tries to come near her, in a protective sort of way. Anyway, I'm looking for some stories about...well...here are some examples: Your AG thinking they are 'defending' you. Your AG sensing you are sick and what they did about it. Your AG 'speaking' for you. Your AG getting frightened by something. I appreciate any stories you can share with me. This woman isn't the protagonist of this project, but I think she's my favorite supporting character, and I'd like to do her companion AG justice.

When I adopted Jon, the woman that runs Fancy Feathers Aviary gave me this product called 'Cream of Tweet'. I had forgotten about it until last night, when I was doing some training with Shelby. He has gotten a bit thinner, and absolutely refuses to eat anything but his zupreem pellets (trust me, I have tried it all). So I went into my birdie bin, found the Cream of Tweet, and decided to make it. After allowing it to cook and letting it cool, I tried giving some to Shelby. He turned his nose up at first, but then began to take small bites...progress! Of course, Jon started to scarf up every bit he could. Has anyone ever used this as a supplement to their parrots diet? Is it okay to use to try and get a bird to gain weight, or should it be a once in a while treat? ingredients: Basmati ricek pearled barley, cracked corn, green split peas, whole wheat, rolled barley, banana chips, raisins, dates, cinnamon, anise seed, with additional calcium, vitamins and minerals. Guaranteed analysis: crude protein min. 7%; crude fat min. 3%; crude fiber max. 4%; ash 4%. Picture:

Thanks! I always find myself writing little stories about my birds. Just today another one of Shelby's tail feathers molted off and was replaced with a big black one.

*is a 20 year old college student* I'm just saying, it's not an impossibility. I think it was wrong to list the bird...my family once adopted a dog from a newspaper ad that said they could no longer take care of the dog. We had the dog for a week, became attached, then the owner came knocking on the door saying she made a mistake. It hurt, incredibly. Good luck in your search! The right AG will come your way! That's what I'm waiting for. -
Is Bird Times still in print? From their website I can't find an issue from much later than 2004?
-
Their cage is supposed to be their safe place, the place that they live in, sleep in, and play in. Using it as a punishment will only cause different behavior problems.
-
Welcome! Buddy looks really sweet. Do you have the dimensions of the cage, or perhaps a full pic? Also, I don't see much of a variety in perches/toys. Just a heads up!

Bird Talk! I freaking love this magazine, and it was the best thing I ever did to get it every month! The only thing I dislike is how objective they are about certain parrot foods, and I think they need to be pickier with their ad's, but otherwise i've gotten some major advice from it. Not to mention there are always funny stories about AG's at the start of every magazine.

One thing I know NOT to do is use his cage as a punishment. He should not look at going into the cage as a bad thing. As for discipline...the only thing I can think of doing is positive reinforcement. My senegal Jon HATEd my boyfriend, and always ran to attack him every time he was over. He would then lash out at me when i tried to stop the attack. I make sure he knows I'm mad when he does this, and when he sits politely on Ilia, my boyfriend's, finger, I give him lots of cuddles and scritches. He now sits on my boyfriends hand with no problem, because he knows he will get rewarded after! Also, if you ever need a cool down, since I'm in NY I can always watch him for you for a few days. My father is a dog trainer and more than once I've seen couples fall apart over how to discipline an unruly animal, and sometimes it's best to just take a bit of a break.

I can't believe it has been ten years. Being from NYC, this day is burned into my mind.

Shelby is Molting By Eshana I awoke this afternoon to the sound of the 'Classic Alternative' station blaring out 80s hits. 'I must have fallen asleep on the couch...' I thought groggily, as one is wont to do at twenty years old. I picked myself up, rubbed the sleep from my eyes lazily, and dragged my feet to the kitchen. After grabbing a "Toffuti Cutie" soy ice cream bar and a bottle of iced tea (the breakfast of champions), I headed to the stairs that led to the upstairs hallway. I grabbed hold of the old, wooden banister and took to walking up the steps. As I reached the top of the stairs, I could hear my Cockatiel Shelby calling to me. The muted sound tugged at my heartstrings as I felt that usual stab of guilt; I had spent the night watching television and doing homework downstairs while my birds...my children...were left to entertain themselves. I pushed the door to my room open and gave a look around. My floor was covered in clothing that needed to be washed, and textbooks that should be in my bookshelf. I threw my breakfast onto my bed; a broken twin mattress with a ripped pillow, covered in more textbooks and oil paints. I shuffled through the mess on my floor to get to my cages. I gave a vague hello to my rats, who were all asleep, and then crossed the room to the birds. Jon 'squaked' with joy to see me. His bright green feathers almost fluorescent in the sun light. Shelby was running around his cage, jumping from this perch to that, obviously anxious to get out and have a good fly around the room. I laughed and opened his cage. That was when I saw it. A long, thin, tail feather sitting at the bottom of Shelby's cage. I grabbed it and put it into the old ice tea powder container that I kept the rest of his feathers in. This was his second to last tail feather to molt, I reflected, counting the feathers in the container. Shelby landed on my shoulder and have me a cheery 'Good morning' whistle. I smiled to him and took out my phone, to look at pictures. I didn't realize how much Shelby has changed. Here is Shelby when I first got him: and here is Shelby now: After spending a few hours with Shelby and Jon, I left my room, wondering what Shelby will look like in the next few months.

What type of Zon is that? So cute!
-
I want to put another vote in for the Cockatiel. My 'tiel, Shelby, not only talks and cuddles, but he will fly to any person he sees, even if he never met them before. I don't know if that's just my 'tiel or 'tiels in general, but he's the only bird I'd let strangers hold.
-
Aw, so cute! This makes me wonder if two companion animal CAG's bred, would that change their personality? I know many people say that breeder birds are less social with their humans.
