  1. I'm not very good with dimensions, but according to the internet... Although the price is good, I'm not sure the size is quite big enough, especially since your grey will be spending 8 hours a day in it. What's your budget? Perhaps someone on here can help you find a cage in your area that is larger within your budget.
  2. I'm sorry if I offended anyone! I know personally that my Shelby would probably fly right into them if they're on, so I did not respect that your parrot is most likely different. Again, I did not mean to offend. Is it possible to clip a parrot so he would only be unable to fly for say...a week or so? When I move I don't picture myself being able to make everything "bird safe" overnight.
  3. Thanks! I have a quick question. This apartment will allow me to keep as many companion animals as I want, but it's in Staten Island. I only want to live here another year and a half or so...do any of you apartment dwellers have a hard time finding bird friendly apartments?
  4. From what I've learned about parrot bites, I usually don't pull away. The bird will bite me, and I will complain about it without actually pulling my hand away (as much as that hurts, ack!) Russian is your native language? My boyfriend is Russian, so his dog Kappa only answers to Russian. That's how I've been building my vocabulary! Previet Kappa! Ahh-dee-suuu-dahh Kappa!
  5. I hope someone with more knowledge of hand feeding comes to help you soon! I wish you the best of luck
  6. Yes, I think it's awesome that you adopted instead of getting a baby. Not that I'm not going to totally get a baby as soon as I can...
  7. Hehe! Well...when you find a PURPLE hamper for five dollars, and someone gives you free computer tower and you bought a nice bowl and chopstick set and stainless steel pots and pans...everything just keeps piling up!
  8. Harping on that point, does anyone know why parrots "dance" to music? My 'tiel will bob his head and my Senegal will sway back and forth, wiggle is head, and slide down his body.
  9. Thank you!!! So, I spoke to the powers that be today and they said that they're getting a lawyer next week, and that if all goes well, the current tenent will be out before January. I really hope she comes to her senses so that she doesn't get in too much trouble...but I'm dying to have my apartment and my CAG!
  10. Thanks for the support you guys! To be honest, I'm not even upset about me having to be in the small room in my parents house. I'm upset that, as I type to you right now, I'm in my living room, and my birds are up in my room. I want to be able to have them out whenever I'm home without fear of a large Golden Retriever (there are three here) chasing them down. I want to have safe cookware to cook them meals in, and I want to be able to give them the sort of play area that they deserve. Is that messed up that I don't even care about the apartment for me, I want it for my fids and my future CAG fid?
  11. I'd much prefer dubstep or the Mieville-esque jungle, but no...all they want is Ke$ha. This is why I will never have kids.
  12. Hello everyone! First off, I want to thank everyone for welcoming me into this wonderful community with open arms. I have earned a wealth of information from this forum, and have met some very interesting people. Now, please excuse me, my lovely parrot loving kin, as I go into a rant. I was supposed to move into my first apartment at the end of August. I am currently living in a small room in my parents house while going to school full time and working an internship. I have two small parrots, a cockatiel and a senegal parrot. My goal when I joined this forum was to gather information on African Grey Parrots, as they are my dream bird, and to adopt one when I moved into my first apartment. I've been waiting patiently, saving money, for that day to come. That day has now come and gone, because the current tenant feels that even though her lease is up and she can't pay the rent, that she has the right to stay there. So here I am, in a tiny room that is filled with a hoarderseque amount of apartment items that I had bought slowly over time. My fids are getting less and less out of cage time as their parrot friendly space is no longer parrot friendly, and I am getting restless. The tenant has basically said that she won't move out until there is a court order to move her out. The landlord can't afford the lawyer without the rent. It's a vicious circle that I fear will end up with me graduating undergrad in may, finding a full time job, and then moving to a bird friendly apartment next summer, while she still lives rent free in what is rightfully mine. All I want to do is pack up my things, buy a manzanita tree, set up my apartment, buy the CAG cage, and put a deposit down. Now I spend every day anxiously hearing if I'm going to be stuck in my small room for the next eight months. Sorry for venting, I'm just really, well...as my title says...frustrated and upset.
  13. Congratulations on your new Grey! I'm still in the process of saving money for my future one. You are certainly right about their intelligence, which is why hitting isn't really a good idea. Could you imagine hitting a three year old child every time they didn't behave? I personally don't think it's good for development. Are you and your roommate equally sharing the grey? What about when one of you moves out?
  14. Gintox...Spock is the perfect name for a bird for a child with Aspergers! Animal therapy works wonders, and I'm glad you've decided to go that route.
  15. Does anyone have links to corner cages that have the litter tray pull out in the front? This is perfect for my apartment space, unfortunately I am disabled and pulling the cage around all the time would be a pain.
  16. He is such a cutie! He looks so spoiled. =]
  17. I am a lover of 80s post punk and classic alternative. Naturally, my fids love Ke$ha.
  18. Well, I did not realize from prior pics that Bunsen was a lutino, but I am thinking she is a she. From the way she perches in these new photos, I want to say female. Now, don't go by that 100 percent, and if you want to know your best bet is a DNA test.
  19. You know...this is something I've wondered about all animals. Did Alex the grey have Aspergers? Is that why his cognitive ability was so amazing? I'm not saying this to brag, or anything, I'm honestly not, but my cockatiel Shelby is freakishly smart compared to other Cockatiels. His cognitive ability with speech really scares me sometimes. I've never met a Cockatiel with this level of speech understanding.
  20. Here is a good example from the internet...males, like my Shelby, always hold themselves upright:
  21. Well unfortunately with Bunsens mutation the only way I can really tell is if you can get a good picture of the tailfeathers on the bottom side. The way Bunsen is standing in the latter half makes me think female, though, as males tend to carry themselves differently when standing.
  22. Don't be fooled! Budgies are actually extremely bright. While they may not seem so outwardly intelligent as a Grey, they certainly hold a candle where parrot intelligence is concerned. What exactly are you looking for in a companion animal parrot?
  23. Do you have any larger pictures of him? I'm pretty good at visually sexing mutated Cockatiels.
  24. You....live...so...close...to....me! I wish this ad went up a month from now! Good luck finding her a home!
