I will be picking up Sadie within the next couple of days, The lady has agreed to take 300 for the bird and cage which is a good price, I will be her 4th home in 6 or 7 years they aren't completely sure of exact age but think it is either 6 or 7 years old. So I know she will come with her share of baggage thank God for all of you guys. I have owned birds for almost twenty years now but they have ALL been hand-fed babies no rescues with the exception of poor sweet Angel that was actually Barb's bird and I feel now she was a little over our head of expertise. Sadie was sexed so for sure she is female. Her diet will be the first thing I will have to start on, all she has been given is canned mixed veggies and left overs from the table. Just in case I haven't mentioned it before let me take the time to do so now you are the nicest group of people "All" gather in one place to help others that I have ever come across and for that I am so thankful. It is what gives me the courage to take Sadie in and hopefully give her a life of happiness. I have to admit I am excited about her too!! Although to date I already have a cag, tag, zon, a halfmoon conure and a budgie. In a few days that will be 2 CAG'S. I will let you know when she get's here. Karen

I started re-homeing without even thinking about it, people knew in this small town I live in that I love birds and I get ask all of the time if I want a bird, as a matter of fact I may need to come up with a plan. I can only care for so many birds and have the time to give them what they need. So please do think about the throw away babies too. Karen

I went last night to look at a grey a lady is trying to rehome, she is about 7 years old and she has a plucked chest but she took some food from my hand and ask me if I wanted some as well, her name is Sadie and the last thing I need is another bird but even my husband that went with me felt she needed a little more TLC than she was getting. The lady has, a U2, a CAG, a B&G, and a blue front zon. The zon was completely untouchable but very talkative. the U2 was plucked but a sweetheart she would have gone home with me in a heartbeart. The grey was plucked as well talked a little but I think she will be totally workable. The blue and gold had me in tears all of the way home. I have never seen a more naked bird that just bobbed his head up and down over and over non-stop I know it sounds crazy but I almost had a feeling that the macaw was a little insane she said she only liked men but I would have liked to at least tried to help that poor sweet bird somehow, ANYWAY! back to my original story I will know tomorrow if she is going to let me have her I could only offer her 300 and hubby will shoot me for doing that but I'm too much of a softie and apparently my name is out there as being the bird lady this one was in Virginia City of all places...LOL. Keep your fingers crossed. Karen

Looking for Opinions on Shipping via Airlines...

I lived about 600 miles from my breeder I met him half way and picked up my TAG she is wonderful and and we are best of friends. No before hand meetings, but if you can afford to do it by all means I would do so. Karen -
To make a long story short I had for many years a bourke parakeet that lived a long happy life and passed away at a ripe old age named "Little Bird" My grey and Zon both talked to Little bird every day and after his passing my Grey would ask me where is Little Bird so I would say that Little Bird went bye-bye. A few months later we got a Half moon conure named Shorty. The first thing out of my Zon's mouth was "Hi Little Bird" to which my Grey quickly responded "NO Little Birds gone bye-bye, hi Shorty" I thought I was going to fall over...LOL...she so amazes me! Granted Shorty had been with us for a little while before they chose to speak to him but Gabby knew exactly who she was speaking to. Karen

Congrats, on the the TAG, I have a baby Tag myself only about 4 1/2 months that is already mumbling and wanting to talk. I also have a CAG that is about 17 years old that I have had since a baby and there is nothing that she doesn't say she is convinced she rules the house the dogs and the other birds and even tells my husband not to use too much salt on his food. They are a riot! You are going to enjoy her/him very much and Barbara is right just start saying the right words at the right times and it doesn't take them long to get things figured out. Welcome aboard this is an extremely friendly and helpful forum, Karen

I called the Spca, Nevada's humane society, the health dept, The local bird rescue, and the Reno police dept. I was spoken to rudely by some, felt blown off by others and told once that I was a busy body. I use to have a friend that always said" I care about me and my 4 and no more" He must of convinced quite a number of people to feel the same, but I refuse to believe the we are without hope. Thank you greywings for the info you sent I will contact her asap. I also found out about a feret rescue in a neighboring town I am going to give a call tomorrow and see if I get anything that can help me there as well. Please keep your fingers crossed the lady from the boxer rescued did say the conditions there are extreme. Thanks everyone for your support, Karen

Hello Guys, Boy am I in a dilema, I just received a phone call from a Boxer rescue group in Reno that heard of our rescue of Angel and ask if there was any info or if I would be interested in helping with a lady that they have gotten info on that has 182 birds in a small house. From what I understand the conditions are pretty bad. I'm not unwilling to help but I am not that experienced in this area. I work in a drug rehab, we don't deal with OCD or any type of mental disorders which this clearly is I am not familiar with hoarding and what the law allows in regards to bird ownership which I understand she can call herself a rescue or breeder and have quite a large number of birds. I know we got no where legally with this so called gentleman that had been Angel previous owner, birds for some reason have less rights that cats and dogs do at least in this state. What should I do? or better get what can I do? I have googled this in everyway I can think of and actually read a case where a lady had over 100 macaws and other birds and as soon as she got things cleaned up she was given the birds back. Any advice I hate to just refuse to even offer a suggestion of any kind I am going to be making calls tomorrow to the humane society, etc, etc If I am to be a completely honest I am a little gun shy right now after all that we went thru with poor sweet Angel but I'm not the type of person to just sit idle either. What do you think where do I start? I also thought about contacting her family but from what I understand her husband has already passed on and she has one son that moved to Boston because his mother refused to accept his gay lifestyle. There is a bird rescue in Reno as well but this lady isn't looking to have her birds rescued. Any and all suggestions are most welcome. Karen

Will A Rehome Grey Be More Likely To Pick A Particular Gender???
Karcar replied to FirstPenguin's topic in The GREY Lounge
There are many many reasons a person will re-home a bird and you are aware that there are less than honest people out there that will tell you exactly what you want to hear to get rid of their bird. Most re-homed birds come with a lot of baggage and you will need to be prepared for all of it. Many times a bird will pick you as his/her favorite human no matter how it was planned the best thing to do in my opinion is for both of you to work with the bird equally and help it to socalize with you both. That way you can all enjoy each other you should start working with the senagel as well and soon you could be handleing and enjoying his company too. Karen -
Thank you so much everyone the whole thing has been so emotional from trying to do the very best we could for Angel's health and her mind, the fear she suffered was heart breaking and the autopsy report has shown she had also been abused many broken bones that had healed improperly. She truly was an Angel she has touched my life in a very special way and opened my eyes to just how in tune these wonderful creatures truly are, I do continue to battle the "IF ONLY'S" but I also know Angel is finally at peace and one she so richly deserves. Thank you all so much for your kindness, and Jay you and Maggie are tops in my book thank you so much for all you have done to help us. Karen

Not sure if it is normal, to me is doesn't seem like it should be but my new baby TAG (Kenya) gives her head a quick little shake over and over thru out the day, she is due back at the vets for a recheck and I am going to mention it to her at that time but just thought I would ask the forum what you thought in the meantime. Thanks, Karen

Welcome, I too have a new baby TAG and a 16 year old CAG. They are both wonderful of course! Karen

3 Diseases Humans Can Get From Bird Poop Histoplasmosis Histoplasmosis is a disease caused by a fungus, which grows in pigeon droppings. It also grows in soils and is found throughout the world. When cleaning droppings a person may breathe in some of the fungus, which in cases of high exposure can cause infection. Common activities, such as cleaning off windowsills, will not result in high exposures. Symptoms of histoplasmosis begin to appear about 10 days after initial infection and include fatigue, fever, and chest pains. Most people, however, do not show any symptoms. Those with compromised immune systems such as cancer patients or people living with HIV/AIDS are generally more at risk of developing histoplasmosis. Cryptococcosis Cryptococcosis is another fungal disease associated with pigeon droppings and also grows in soils throughout the world. It is very unlikely that healthy people will become infected even at high levels of exposure. A major risk factor for infection is a compromised immune system. Researchers at Albert Einstein Collage of medicine in the Bronx found that 70% of urban children have been exposed to Cryptococcosis. Psittacosis Psittacosis (also known as ornithosis or parrot fever) is a rare infectious disease that mainly affects parrots and parrot-like birds such as cockatiels, and parakeets, but may also affect other birds, such as pigeons. When bird droppings dry and become airborne people may inhale them and get sick. In humans, this bacterial disease is characterized by: fatigue, fever, headache, rash, chills, and sometimes pneumonia. Symptoms develop about 10 days after exposure. Psittacosis can be treated with a common antibiotic
