Alex the Congo African Grey parrot and his colleague Dr. Irene Pepperberg were a part of a study in parrot cognition for over 30 years at his death. Alex could identify a number of materials by touch. This was done in a lab type setting using curtain phrases as not to give a clue to the object, like (what matter is this) that way they knew for sure if he understood the question. This process was complicated. As I read about it I got lost in the process, but they can learn to identify objects.

My live in mouth piece competes with the T.V., the phone, with the dogs or with anything that may take the attention away from her. Have you ever heard the phrase, spoiled rotten. Well she has the rotten part down pat and not bad at the spoiled part either.

For the past number of weeks I have been looking into the Crickets Amazon room archives for ideas for some new threads in Crickets Amazon room when I came across a thread that said (Welcome Ray) It was a thread that Penny started to welcome me as a new moderator to the Amazon Room. I remember how excited I was to be a moderator. When I looked at the date of the thread it was 09/04/2011 and than I felt bad because when Cricket passed away it was like the wind was taken from my sails and I just could not start or answer threads. Well to make a long story short Penny never gave up on me and I will always be eternally grateful for that. As you all know she has added more rooms to my list to help do what this forum is all about. A trip to the archives can tell you where we came from and where we want to go and it will also tell you why we are here. A FEATHER BROUGHT US TOGETHER.

When Corky is out of her cage it`s a full time job just to keep her out of trouble. She gets into everything. It`s no Corky don`t eat the wood work, No Corky get off the frig. No Corky you can`t have that. If you don`t behave it`s back to your cage, OK that`s it !!!! Back to your cage !!! and than she will do something sweet (damn it). Than she will give you kisses and rub her head up and down your cheek until you calm down and than it`s back to her old stand by and that is trouble. Dose this sound like your red tailed trouble maker ?!?!!!!

You did not know that it`s their way or the highway ??

OH they are just being a TOO. but yes there comes a time that you need some relief. A TOO has the loudest scream in the parrot world.

First things first, I am not an advocate against shouldering your Parrot and I am not an advocate for shouldering your Parrot. All my parrots are and have been shoulder birds. Many so called experts say you should never shoulder a Parrot because of the damage they could do to your face. I will not argue the fact. but I will say that many care givers come to over time a very special trusting relationship. It`s the most beautiful relationship you could ever have with your companion It`s based on a strong bond and mutual trust and that each has no fear of the other. If you are afraid a parrot is going to bite you, well guess what, they will. Good comes with trust and bonding and the building of a relationship. When working with your Parrot, talk to them and not at them and make sure your presence is non-threatening, This is just a start to a long time partnership. It`s up to you so make it a good one.

May this birthday be the best ever and each birthday after this be better than the last.

In the last 15 years or so all of my birds have had full flight ability,, but it was not always that way. Back in 1970 when my wife and I started with our cockatiels it was a common and acceptable practice to trim the wings of your bird. It was believed that with trimmed wings they would be easer to train, handled and keep track with limited flight ability and that they could not fly away if they got out, but over the years things do change.

As neoow pointed out in the thread Cage aggression tips the door perch is also a good way to get your fid to go back in to the cage. When I work with a new bird I also use the door perch when it comes to returning them to their cage. When it1s time to go back I would let them see me put a favorite treat into their cage as I move them to the door perch and each time they see me put in a different place in the cage. As they get used to the treat always being in the cage it`s no longer a punishment to go back The next step after they know there will be a treat in the cage is not let them see you put their treat in the cage so when the go back in their cage it`s fun to watch them go looking for it. When working with your fids always make it fun and rewording and they will love you for it.

Birdhouse brought up some very important things as our little snots can get into anything. Something else to remember is that open doors are a place that they love to perch on. If you are in the kitchen and opened a cabinet door make sure they are not perched on them as they may be there just to be with you, Also you may have screen doors at your entrance so you cn keep your doors open when the weather nice so make sure they are not perched on them when you close the doors. Many a birds have been injured by doors. Thank you Birdhouse for your input.

When it comes to their health it`s not always about nutrition or their social development. It can be about the dangers in your house which is their home. There is the cooking stove a ceiling fan that are some of the most obvious things you may think about. If your grey is like mine when she is out of her cage she gets into every thing you can thing of. Corky will walk around on the floor so when you come into a room you have to watch where you step because she might be under foot. S he likes to chew on things like the lamp cords. On the counter it`s the coffee maker cord or the toaster cord. On the counter we can unplug the toaster and the coffee maker but the lamp not so much Health Room Assignment For some of us older members lets help out new or want to be parrot care givers with a list of things we need to do to our homes to make it safe for our companion parrots be it a Grey, Amazon, Cockatoo`s or what ever I will start with the first one Keep the lid down on the toilet. Unless it`s a duck.

My story is not that long but, the wife and I had been looking at and for a grey for about two years. We had seen many greys in that time frame and one day we stopped at a pet store that we dealt with for many years and they had just received a clutch of greys that were 9 weeks old. Well we asked to see them and when our friend opened the cage this one grey came out on her own and run up my wife s arm to her shoulder and took a poop. Well we put down a deposit and took her home at 16 weeks. I guess you can say it was love at first poop.

We all know that some parrots have cage aggression, This goes back to their life in the wild as they will do all they can to protect their nesting site. It`s their home so you have to stay out !!! That may be OK in the wild, but there are many reasons that this is not in their best interest in the home. You need to go in their cage for cleaning, to feed them, to change their water and move or replace their toys from time to time. Most cages have food and water doors for feeding and changing their water. You may be able to do some of the other when they go to the other side of the age. So what if there is an emergency and you need to remove them from their cage and get them to safety in a hurry. A weather emergency (storms) an environmental emergency or a emergency in your own home (Fire, gas or what ever) and you only have seconds. There may not be time to chase them around their cage and get them to safety. This is something I have done for many years and with a great deal of success. First; your parrot must know step up and know it well. Second; train your parrot with treats to come to their perch when you tap the end of the perch from out side of the cage. Third; Install a door perch and make sure it will clear the door frame when you open the door and the perch is low enough so your parrot does not hit their head on the door header. When you want to let your parrot out just tap the door perch from the out side of the cage along with a treat they can see. when they step onto the door perch just open the door and swing the door open easily until they are completely out side their cage and they should step up from the perch with out any trouble. Use this method when ever you take your parrot from their cage so it becomes routine. After this the cage aggression may just go away in time.

this post is for the person that would like a companion parrot. You will read a lot about doing lots of research when it comes to choosing a companion that may be around a long time. It may be a Grey, Amazon or cockatiel or one of the many species that are available to you. You check out size, species, are they a good family companion, what are their health issues just to name a few. The one thing we here at the Grey forums want to see is a successful long term and a happy relationship with you and your new family member. On this forum you will read about proper nutrition, housing social interaction, relationships and bonding. Its important to look at ourselves also because we can suffer from a thing called allergies that could effect our long term relationship. There are many types, pollen, dog hair and dander. Different species of parrots will have different degrees of dander, to name a few, African Greys, Cockatiels and Too`s are high dander parrots and if you are highly allergic to dander a grey may not be a good choice for you as this may become a health issue down the road and you may need to rehome your companion. Amazons are a lower dander parrot but may not be the choice for a new parrot care taker or family. There are many species of parrots to choose from so choose one that can come close to your lifestyle and one that slip into your routine so you both can have a long, happy and healthy union together. some of my joys of life.

Even in the wild any parrot can damage a feather and have a little blood loss. The fact that he is doing all the thing that he dose on a normal day, playing, talking like nothing happened is a good sign that nothing happened. For your own well being just keep an eye on him for a day or two because I know you will out of guilt. YOU DID NOTHING WRONG except having fun with your parot and that's not so bad.

Even grumpy Too`s need some one to love them. Good looking boy.
