I'd love some pics... do they all have cages of do you have a bird-room or what? I'd love to hear more! Welcome btw I wanna come visit haha

So I keep going to a Petsmart near here, and every time I go I see this cute little Green-Cheeked Conure there who by now recognizes me and jumps to the front of its cage pushing its head through the bar for scratches... usually I'm not a fan of Conures, but this little guy is a cutie and so friendly! Today, I'm scratching her through the bars when an employee asks if I want to hold her. Yes please, I say, and inside the little area we go... He tells me that she is very hard to get out, grabs a butterfly net, and reaches into the cage with it! I was like what the hell... he trys to grab the bird through the net and it jumps away flipping out... such a drawn out fuss, I thought how ridiculous... I say I'll try to get her and said I don't mind getting bit because he was looking at me like I'M BEING RIDICULOUS... yes I got bit a couple times and it took a minute, but then she came out and settled right down for a nice neck scratching session all close and personal... she was really a sweetie... using a net on her is silly... and she is 10 months old and doesn't even understand stepping up on a finger yet... I talked to the guy who cares for the birds. He was nice, I have nothing against him. He freely admitted though that with the Petsmart schedule, you have no time to actually spend with individual birds so they are practically left untouched every day except for food and water changing... it's so sad I left Petsmart feeling a little sad that I can't buy another bird and angry that Petsmart can't take the small cut in an hours pay extra a day for one employee to spend a small session of time with their birds... Sorry for the rant... I knew you guys would understand my sadness though best...

I little early I know... but a friend shared it with me and it's pretty cute, thought I'd post it before I forgot about it! A GREY PARROT'S CHRISTMAS (By Old World Aviaries) T'was the night before Christmas and all through the nest, not a wing was a flutter; we birds were at rest. Our feed cups were hung by the cage doors indeed, in hopes that Santa would fill them with seed. We Parrots were perching all snug in our beds, while visions of pine nuts danced through our heads. After another long day of taking our flap, Mom and Dad settled down for a long winter's nap. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my cage to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, chewed open the shutters and threw up my mash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow, looked as bare as my chest (well, what do you know?). When what to my beady eyes should appear, but a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer. With a little grey driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment he wasn't too slick. Hey Senegals, and Conures, and Yellow Napes, and Toucans, Macaws, and Eclectus, and all you Moluccans. To the top of your perches (don't splatter the wall), now listen, now listen; can you hear our loud call? As seed shucks that wild parrots make fly, when they meet with an obstacle; take that in your eye! So up to the nest-top those reindeer they flew, with a sleigh full of toys, and Santa Bird too. That's when I heard it, (was it The Real Macaw?) the scratching and digging of each little claw. As I flew back to my cage and was turning around, down the chimney Santa Bird crashed - - a terrible sound. He was dressed all in feathers from his head to his foot, and his wings were all tarnished with ashes and soot. Zac Squiggles' safe toys he had flung on his back, and he looked like a vulture awaiting a snack. His eyes, how they twinkled! His strutting, how merry! his grey wings enormous, his red tail like a cherry! His sharp little beak was as black as a crow, and the skin on his chest was as bare as the snow. The stump of a cracker he held tight in his bill, and he gobbled the crumbs 'til he'd had his fill. He had a grey face, and a round naked belly, that was as ugly and pink, as a ham from the deli. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly grey elf, and I laughed, when I saw him, cause he looked like myself. But, he let me know I had nothing to dread, everything was okay, cause my tail was red. He spoke lots of words, while he continued his work, and filled all the treat cups, then called me a jerk. And laying a wing-tip aside of his beak, up the chimney he rose like a sneak. He sprang to his sleigh, to the team gave a whistle, and away they all flew, like the down off a Quetzal. But, I heard him shriek, ere he flew out of sight, "Pine nuts to all, and to all a good-flight!"

Any ideas for homemade Christmas toys?

Oh yes, Yoshi will lean until she is off-balance and will start lifting her wings as if to say "Take me or I'll jump!" She is clipped right now unfortunately but still determined to use her wings, they just don't get her anywhere at the moment Except on the floor a few feet away

Oh no, these don't work at all in here, lol... and I was trying to learn how to do them... Check out the link though, I think Ascii Art Parrots look pretty cool http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:d0rbUVqS7Q0J:www.skye4birds.com/ascii.htm+parrot+ascii+art&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

Post edited by: jessdecutie18, at: 2009/10/21 20:26

I'm not any help as Yoshi was halfway into the weaning process before we got her, but I hope everything turns out okay for the baby, keep us informed!
-
Yoshi did the same thing exactly until she hit 5 and a half months... Someone is usually home though, so she spends a lot of time outside the cage. Now she will eat inside her cage as a last resort, but prefers to eat outside the cage with us.

So I’ve mentioned this before, but never in detail, and in the last month I’ve started thinking more and more about it as the time gets closer… I think I’m in need of some advice! I’m in the Air Force, and February I will be gone almost the entire month for Network Administration training in Mississippi. Well, the more I think about it the more I really want to bring Yoshi with me. Here are my thoughts/problems: The lodging on base houses pets (some of it) but I really don’t know if I’m allowed to PCS with a pet. I still have to find that out somehow… It will be a 10 hour drive for me… I’ve taken Yoshi on 30-40 minute trips in her pet carrier and she is totally fine, even to the point of trying to sleep and playing with toys. The car doesn’t seem to bug her. But 10 hours is a bit different… will she be okay? Is the pet carrier fine, or should I get a small cage? I don’t have tons of money, lol, so I won’t be getting the ‘deluxe travel cage’ or whatever, but I do want to do all I can… Now, her cage at home is very big, possibly too big for my trunk, so I have to measure that still. At least if I could get the cage in there, it has a play-top and plenty of room and toys and stuff to help occupy her, as well as being something so knows… there is no way a cage and her play stand will fit in there… The cage was very difficult to put together, but perhaps I will have to try and take it apart some. It seems like this will not be easy… but I really don’t want to leave Yoshi behind. If I have to I can, my husband will take care of her I’m sure. But he just isn’t as eager to be with her as me. Another option is the breeder we got Yoshi from, she does babysitting for $5 a day, but she has a big room with about 30 cages in it at a time, all birds she is babysitting… and do I really want Yoshi around all that? It’s loud and she won’t get much one on one time at all… I’m rambling here now… tell me what you guys think Thanks! BTW, Yoshi is like 6 and a half months old and we change things constantly in her room, and her cage, and just our whole house, so she doesn't seem to be afraid of much at all. Hopefully that will help!

Lol how cute We try to give Yoshi 'non-mushy' food until she is in her cage for that exact reason

My Grey is banded too, as was my Quaker Parrot I used to have. Isn't it usefull in tracking a lost bird, or tracking the breeder down and finding out information about the bird? I'm in the military, and the possibility of going overseas is high. Is the band needed for any paperwork going out of the US? I've never even considered getting the band taken off...

Post edited by: jessdecutie18, at: 2009/10/20 19:58

Mine show up that way too... changed after I added a couple pictures a while back... glad to know it is in the process of being fixed.

Lol, we don't have cats but I never would have thought that could happen! Thanks for the tip!

Lol, I got some laughs reading these replies I love the babbling too, it's cute, can't wait till some words start coming out of that beak

So a little update on Yoshi, lol. Yoshi has definately started making the weird noises, nothing at all understandable though, yet ONLY either while she is alone and I'm in the shower and the loud water is running, or after WE are in the shower and she is drying off close to me and being crazy ONLY while I've put on music while she is being crazy. The minute I turn the water off in the first scenario, or turn the music off in the second scenario, it stops... Weirdo Don't know how I can get her to practice more, she is a really quiet bird at any other time... Also, we have been trying to get her to turn around, and my husband actually called me today at work to tell me that just today, he said turn around while dangling a morsel of cheese in front of her, and she scuttled around happily, then gave him a kiss Yay Yoshi

Oh I love the pictures, especially that last one What pretty birds

Lol how funny Yoshi often accompanies me to the bathroom too, and I honestly never thought about that

Thanks guys Maybe I'll try another one sometime

So this is probably terrible, as I'm not really a poet at all But I had some extra time at work today and was thinking about Yoshi and some of the stuff I've heard lately from people giving away their birds... just felt like trying a poem Tomorrow your new baby comes home. How exciting it must be. But have you done your homework? There is a lot you might not see. When you bring this lovely creature home. You probably do not know. Just how very smart it is. Nor how your life will go. Such a lovable creature. So you buy it and take it away. But alas you don't yet know. What challenges will come each day. Sometimes they bite. Sometimes they scream. They make lot's of messes too. Another thing to remember is; They'll probably out live you. Feathers will fly everywhere. The dirt devel is your friend. With food all over the floor. Will the mess ever end? Parrots are wild creatures. But live in homes you see. They depend on us to give to them. All the things they need. They need to have their showers. Don't forget their Doctor too. They cannot live on seed alone. So Sad That many do. They have different moods. Just the same as us. Don't give them what they like. They are bound to make a fuss. They need Love and Understanding. when they are scared or hurt or sad. They do not understand it when. What they do makes us so mad. We must always remember. They were meant to be free. We must give them more than just a cage. For they would really like a tree. So when you take a parrot home. Please keep these things in mind. It's up to you to understand And always to be kind. So remember your task when it seems hard to do For your kind loving friend will appreciate you. Love your baby no matter what. She will always love you too. The love my Grey shows me. Keeps me from feeling blue. I will always love my Yoshi. She is a part of our family forever. No matter what the circumstances. I promise we shall always be together. Never give up on your baby. Try not to get mad. Treat your baby right. He will be the best friend you've ever had. Post edited by: jessdecutie18, at: 2009/10/13 22:24

Post edited by: jessdecutie18, at: 2009/10/14 22:04
