That's very cute

It's so nice when they come for you, and you know they love you and want to be with you too... Yoshi will call for me when I'm close to her but busy, and if I don't notice and respond in some way, she will take a daring leap and flap/crash on the floor only to come scuttling over as if to say "don't you dare forget about me! I need you!"

So a while back Yoshi found a softball on my desk, you know those foamy ones you get from marketing giveouts and stuff? She enjoyed shredding it to pieces with her beak, so I stuck it in her cage on a piece of leather and she beat it around and shredded it, lasted her about a week. My question now is, thinking back, are they safe? Is anything foamy like that safe? I'm thinking she would like to do the same with those packing peanuts or even another softball...

Since the beginning my husband and I have held Yoshi and when heading with her up and down stairs we say 'Upstairs, Flap, Flap, Flap!' and run up and down the stairs. Yoshi likes going up the stairs most and now it is so funny seeing her flapping her wings building those muscles like a crazy bird. She enjoys the attention and the occasional pistachio she gets for working those wings! My hope is that by making flapping fun and rewarding to her, she will try extra hard and have a good jump start at flying when she gets those feathers back! She's only had 'one initial flight and was clipped straight away' says the breeder

Well I'm no expert in this matter, but I can say a few things... are your birds clipped? That could make a difference... If Louie can fly away from your Grey then she should be safer... I used to have a Quaker Parrot and a Parrakeet, both fully flighted, and as long as they were out of their cages they were fine, but then one day I had my Quaker out and she got onto my Parrakeet's cage and bit into one of her little toes... it was terribly scary... I would say never leave them alone together without supervision, because you just don't know. Also, every bird is different, so watch how they interact and I think you will soon be able to tell if they are going to be friendly or not. Hope that helps, and good luck with your babies! At least they are both young... hopefully they will accept each other before long

Glad Gizmo can fly, hopefully it doesn't take long for him to learn to avoid the crash landings! Yoshi is 7 months, clipped after one meager first flight as a baby, so I expect I will have some trouble with her practicing at first too! Good luck!

Those look fun! Bet Biscotti is having a blast

Aww I'm sorry Jilly... Yoshi has had a couple time outs... guess it happens to everyone You gotta love the little devils though

Also, Yoshi has been introduced to foot toys after all that playing with little kids toys at my brother's house, and loves them Especially the noisy ones... I've had to tie a string on them so they don't just fall to the bottom all the time

So Yoshi had a fun Thanksgiving too! Off we all went to my Brother's house, and Yoshi was as relaxed as ever in the car, I guess since she is used to it. She preened herself as if preparing herself for all the people she was about to meet. When we arrived there were 3 kids and a dog running around, as well as 4 adults and my husband and I, so she was pretty nervous, a lot more commotion then she is used to. Plus, she hasn't spent much time around kids yet so she seemed a bit edgy. Before long though, she was settled in, either riding on my shoulder and sharing the appetizers I was eating (cheesy crackers, broccoli, and nuts) or on her portable table top stand watching everything that was going on. She warmed up to the kids, especially the littlest one, who got out his bucket of toys and thought it was hilarious as he gave her one toy after the other, which she held and nibbled on then dropped. While we had our dinner, I put her back in her carrier in the other room for some relax time away from all the craziness, then after everyone was settling down talking and watching TV, I got her back out, fixed her some turkey, mash, corn, a couple nuts, broccoli, etc. and fed her. She had a blast Not long after, you could tell she felt the effects of eating a lot and wanted to relax too, because she fell asleep on her stand right there in front of all the family... one foot up and her head back, happy as can be. I was worried bringing her would be a mistake, and yes it was extra hassle and stuff, but in the end I sure am glad she could enjoy thanksgiving too Sorry I didn't post this earlier but I've been busy Here is a pic of her eating food from me(First pic I've ever posted on here with me in it, lol)

That does sound good! I'm glad for you and your Talula, looks like the love and hard work is paying off eh?
-
I'm glad her living conditions have improved somewhat... I'm sorry she doesn't get much time out of her cage or that you haven't dared to take her out yourself. That's great about the volunteering, but don't forget your baby, and if I was you I'd try to spend one on one time with her getting her outta that cage and onto your fingers! I know bites suck but in the end you and your bird will be much happier with the freedom to interact without fear from either of you being together. It will make you guys understand each other better Good job on keeping a difficult bird though, and good luck to you!

Lol, what fun
-
Lol it's funny seeing them two interact with each other

There is no hurt in trying to show Tobie It just shows that you love your baby and want her to know 'home'... but hopefully she will never get loose Jan!

Baby boy is obsessed with Scratchies

Yoshi LOVES her scratchies I have NEVER been bit while scratching, lol, she just turns into a furry goofball and scratches with her foot to show me where she wants scratchies. She'll cuddle down in your lap and close her eyes and relax to a full scratching session almost any day. She has her 'don't touch me' moments sometimes, but most of the time she is excited to hear 'Wanna scratch?' from us and turns her head upside down and is goofy. Here is a normal relaxing scratching session for her taken just the other day: -

Awesome pic -
Aww Looks like Koko is right at home... you make me want to harness train Yoshi so much, with all these pretty pictures of Koko's outings... My husband and I are not really outdoor people, so he sees no point in it. But I'd like to take Yoshi out on a walk or to the beach or park... now I've just gotta convince him
-
Lol, Dayo doesn't know what to do with 'Furbie' and probably wonders what on earth it is
-
Okay, so I've been thinking about this, and I know you guys won't think I'm as crazy as some Every time my husband and I go somewhere fun, I'm thinking of Yoshi and missing her, especially if we are out for more than a couple hours. Tonight we went to an outdoor restaurant by the beach and some guy had a Cockatoo there on a stand (yes, he was unharnessed and just chilling there) and it made me think about Yoshi, and all the stuff I'd like her to come to like that... I know there is the flight harnesses, and I am considering getting one of those for Yoshi soon, even though a couple years back I tried the Feather Tether with a Quaker and didn't get much success... My big question is WHERE can you take your birds? Those that have there birds leashed for the outdoors, where have you found is parrot friendly enough to bring your baby along? Or is it just for the walk outdoors? I don't want people to think I'm dumb for wanting to go places with my bird I know you guys do it so I'd love to share some of your stories with family... we do live less than 10 minutes from the beach too and I bet Yoshi would like to see that... Thanks!

Post edited by: jessdecutie18, at: 2009/11/25 05:40

Good question BTW...
-
I expect that after they get spooked or caught up or whatever, they are taken out of their comfort area, and the area they know. They are then in unknown territory and without guidance from us they are lost. For those with clipped birds (like me for now unfortunately) even if they see you they may not know how to get back to you. They are scared and lost... I expect it's like if I got lost in a big scary maze without any of the comforts I know... I'd just freeze up and not know where to go...

Looks like Koko found lots of perches in that gym

So I couldn't help but check out some of Youtube's free flight videos... some of them are lovely I love going to a good bird-show and seeing professionals and their birds... Yet I know the scare in free flight, the fact that anything could happen to make your baby fly away, no matter how close they are to you... I came across this video... and thought it served as a sad, unfortunate reminder that even if your bird means the world to you and you want the best for it, this free flying activity can be a disaster. (At about 2:30 minutes in he talks about the actual incident, if you are in a rush.)
