JillyBeanz wrote: Lol, my baby Yoshi is almost too quiet, it makes me worry! But he is only 5 months... I'm sure that will change in time... I'd think, lol. I've only had Yoshi for about a month, but I love him to pieces... yes there is work and lots of mess involved lol, but I already know that as I used to have a Quaker Parrot Don't worry though, if you are willing to put up with the mess and devote time and love to your bird, you will be just fine Research ahead of time and know what you are getting into, that sure helped me Good luck!

So I hand-fed Yoshi earlier tonight, and he gulped it down like he always does... he sure does eat a lot After he was finished, I get up to put the bowl in the sink and start to leave telling Yoshi I'll be back in two seconds... when he calls to me and takes a huge leap from the floor and I'd say he got about 2 feet in the air before falling back down to the floor... This sort of stuff keeps happening... I've caught him flapping his wings a couple times randomly and he keeps making 'suicide leaps' off of stuff to get to my husband and I or to his cage or play gym... I worry about him as he lands especially the last couple days because he always lands on his feet but it seems so hard. Doesn't bother him though, I think he is just eager to be able to fly! We purchased him a couple days after the breeder 'trimmed' the wings... well I guess the trim wasn't too much because he is starting to gain a tiny bit of altitude... I'm excited for him and worried. The breeder trimmed his wings after only 1 or two flights, so he barely had them. I want him to be able to fly, so we are definitely leaving him alone for now, and he is such a sweet baby... but if problems start coming from allowing this, or if it turns out dangerous, or if he keeps flying away all the time... he may have to be clipped. Definitely keeping an open mind Yoshi is trying so hard, I don't wanna take that chance away from him!

lol ranaz... we still don't know if Yoshi is male or female, luckily Yoshi is a name that I think works for both The DNA test was rejected, we were supposed to get results today actually... but another test will be sent out... so we have to wait another week to know the sex.

So I'm probably just being a worry wort again but I don't know... Yoshi is so cute... so lovable... and so quiet... and I'm starting to wonder about the quiet part. I've never heard him squawk loud at all, almost always the tiny squeaks... he pipes up a bit if say he is on his playstand and I am doing something interesting sounding in the kitchen and wants to join me... but even that isn't very loud, nothing like my Quaker Parrot used to be. Often he is completely silent if say I am in his room studying or something. Yoshi is almost 5 months old now, don't know if he is still a quiet baby or something? Also, while he is eating plenty pellets and seeds and bits of fruit and veggies and cereal, etc. he is still accepting his baby food, I guess not completely weaned. The breeder said he would surely be rejecting it in 2 weeks tops, but it has been two weeks and while eating less, he still likes it. Will he eventually refuse it or what? Yoshi seems to eat all day too, like that's his favorite thing to do in life. Is he just a growing bird, or do I need to regulate his foods more? Also, goofy Yoshi is still sleeping on his bowls, rarely on his multiple perches, rarely eating or drinking in his cage just on the playtop, and still doesn't really play with his numerous toys in his cage at all. He seems like a happy baby, gets lots of love, goes to my husband for scratches all the time, loves pistachios, is still undecided whether he loves or hates getting wet I believe... nothing wrong really. Lol he isn't fond of our new Roomba Discovery robot vacuum for automatic cleaning we bought today. It's loud and when it bumped into his cage he glided/crash landed across the room in fright. I think tomorrow I'll introduce him to it slowly, let him poop on it ans stand on it and then hold him while it cleans a bit. He seems very brave, not much freaks him out. I try to say "Your Okay" as I do anything loud or move anything big, or when I save him from the place he has crash landed at, so hopefully he will understand that everything is alright I love my Yoshi

Good points danmcq! I was thinking likewise... Leia, I understand your frustration at some of the replies you have gotten, but you need to do research and know your facts before you post such a reply. I respect your decision to clip your birds wings, but please learn exactly what you are doing to your bird and the downfalls as well as the benefits before you do. From your statements that an unclipped bird is more at risk outdoors than a clipped one, as well as many other statements you made, it is obvious that you do not know what you are talking about. Sorry for the frustration on the Forum, I've found nothing but help from being on here.

I have also heard that having a mirror in the cage can stop a parrot from wanting to talk/bond with you as much. Not saying it's true, just what I've heard in a couple pet stores, would love to know the truth...

My Yohsi's wings were trimmed when we first got her, still trying to decide whether they will be staying that way for not... We will wait and give her a chance and see how it all works out because I'd love Yoshi to fly but not if it puts her in danger. Do the wing feathers just keep growing out after being trimmed or clipped, so that the bird can eventually fly again, or do they fall out and be replaced? Something I've never quite understood...

My baby is still finishing hand feeding too, I didn't want to wait either I know exactly how you felt. I understand a busy schedule, that was my problem with Kiwi. School all week then I wanted to go out partying and watching movies with friends. I didn't give my Kiwi the time she diserved. That's excellent that you will keep trying, that you are determined to keep her. Go slow, don't give up. I can tell that you want her. Do you know her favorite foods? Let her come out on her own, encourage her while you do homework to come out, give her treats. What do your parents think of her? My parents were not bird people and that just made everything so hard. Kiwi ended up stuck in my room because my parents didn't want bird poop everywhere. Now I live with my open-minded husband, and I can choose to have playstands in different rooms and have my baby out wherever I am. This is very convienient because then instead of sacrificing the things I like, like eating at the dining room table with my husband or watching T.V., Yoshi (my grey) can join in with all these things.

Socialization is an important factor in raising a parrot. If your bird is freaking out at everything and everyone, it has obviously not had much socialization or a chance to explore different places and get used to different sights. Do you change around what's inside the cage often? How big is the cage? I'm glad you came to the forum for help. It shows that no matter how many mistakes were made in the past with your bird's upbringing, you are wanting to fix everything now. I just hope you aren't looking for a fast fix and actually have the time to change things.

Sounds rough! I think you need to give us MUCH more detail of your parrot's daily life and routine. How's the cage? With the loud noises, is she getting much sleep at night? She needs time out of that cage. I think there is a lot more going on here and that you need to consider the way you are treating your bird and what it has to put up with. You can't just expect it to be 'lovable' if you don't put the time, effort, and proper care into your Grey. I'm not trying to sound mean here. I just feel that I can relate to this. I am a new Grey owner, but in High School I used to have a Quaker Parrot. I loved him at first, but in the end I was too young to have this responsibility. I didn't have the time for him, or the money to spoil him, and I was just unprepared. He started biting and this just resulted in hurt feeling and more time in his cage, which obviously ended up just making everything worse. He went from the sweetest baby ever to being uncontrollable. Giving up Kiwi, my quaker, was a very hard thing for me, I begged my parents to death to get him, but in the end it was for the best. Since then he has been living with an experienced older friend that spoils him rotten and is happy as can be. I leant from that experience that taking on a parrot is a big responsibility, and as much as you may want one and as much as you love him, you have to be ready to take on the responsibility and willing to give up time as well. I will never make that mistake again. Just my thoughts...

What are some beginner training ideas for me and Yoshi to try? He is just finishing hand feeding and there aren't a lot of foods I can tell he just loves, but he does pick all the sunflower seeds out of his food before anything else, so yesterday I sat down with him for almost 15 minutes, showed him the sunflower seed, said "Do you want one? Step up!" and tried teaching him that he can be rewarded for doing something simple. For the first 5 minutes he ducked around my hand and was determined to find the hidden sunflower feed, ignoring the step up command. Then it clicked, and he realized quick that all he had to do is step up, hear me say 'Good Job!' and the hidden seed would magically re-appear! I got him stepping as far as he could (wings are clipped so he can't fly just yet, although he keeps attempting to lol). Now what should I try without getting too complicated for him, cause he's still young
