  1. Wonderful post and nice pictures, glad your Koi's ok'...Karma...
  2. Our Spock and Joey are very neurotic about the color of their cages and their cages themselves. Spock will not go to any other cage besides his own and his has to be white. Spock is out all the time and has only a sleep cage because that is all he will go into...(it's white) Joey only likes his cage and it is black. We brought in a cage for one of the other birds and Spock and Joey both had a fit! We had to take them out of the room and bring in the cage before they came back in. We brought in a white perch stand and Spock would not go near it. He is just now going to Joey's cage (after all this time) and the last couple of days, he has been landing on the top and eating out of Joey's seeds (sheesh!) Maggie
  3. All our fid's are *Abundantly fed*, given more then they would ever eat and changed often. We blend with "Volkman Sunless" seed mix: flax seed, [spock only, sunflower seeds hulled], almonds, Brazil, filbert, peanuts[shelled],sesame seeds[hulled],pumpkin seeds, and Nutra-berry's. All the fids smash consists of: sweet potato, carrots, organic peanut butter, [one at a time] apple sauce, pear and/or banana. [This is how we give them there palm oil] Their mash consist of all these items but not at the same time: couscous, orzo,[trying oatmeal]seven-grain hot cereal, quinoua, legumes, balsamic brn rice, yellow and green split peas, lentils. We also blend: [we grow these veggies]chard, collards, mustard greens, kale, broccoli, red, yellow and orange bell peppers, [we don't grow] carrots,chayote,cauliflower,sugar-snap peas and green-beans, some corn on cob.beans, squash[winter, zucchini, yellow, butternut,] There fruit in moderation:pears, apple, orange, pomegranate, grapes, true berry's,bananas, cantaloupe dried papaya and mango's. their treats besides whats mentioned above are: Salt free pretzels, toast, yogurt/sesame/peanut balls. Our daily food prep time exceeds 2 hour's, all is fresh. Our 2 Too's eat 50% pellets. We have tired every brand of pellets on earth more than once, we tired Harrison's 3 times this year alone. Most our fid's are "rescue or re-home and that makes it hard. I know we forgot something, we love watching them enjoy themselves... Jay and Maggie <br><br>Post edited by: Jayd, at: 2010/03/07 20:59
  4. Thank you all, your wishes and prayers mean so much. Spock quit eating his formula 2 weeks ago, we tired mixing it with other foods to no avail. Spock's feathers and biting was his first signs of a problem followed by his stools. The only places we've seen him preen is the back of his neck,[feathers ok there] flight feathers and bend of his left wing. His chest and wing tops are curly cues and he must do it at night when covered. We got him to eat a little oatmeal[1tsp] last night. Jay and Maggie Note :We just did a post in "Bird Food" you might find interesting...
  5. :woohoo: In this short video Salsa is playing like a puppy with Jay's hand...too funny...Jay says "OOOWWW!! A puppy with one sharp tooth!" :blink Maggie
  6. Salsa had her first chicken bone the other day. At first she was skeptical. ...She sniffed at it like a dog and was not impressed at all. Once she worked up her courage enough to pick it up though, she was in 7th heaven. Maggie:P <br><br>Post edited by: Jayd, at: 2010/03/07 02:25
  7. Spock here, Thank you all. They forgot to mention that I eat at least a teaspoon of organic peanut butter a day, [ going to try it on toast tonight...]that's my favorite food.... Spock<br><br>Post edited by: Jayd, at: 2010/03/07 01:19
  8. Thanks all, and thanks Dave, I'll dfinitely follow your suggestions. Here a detailed break down: Rice milk, stopped, Yogurt/cottage cheese, vet recommend, cottage cheese stopped, yogurt he gets 1/4 tsp, Fruit I'll reduced as you recommend, I like pectin in apples but will reduce also, Pellets, Spock won't eat *any pellets*,His veggies are kept in his cage 24/7, changed often,[were known for our use of veggies in birds diet], a special seed mix is kept 24/7 and changed 2 + times a day, Problems with Spock eating oatmeal [will try harder] but eats his piece of toast, Yellow cheese, will do, assorted nuts [fresh] are kept available for him at all times, He's on Palm oil...Spock weighed 580-590 grams when this started....They determined Spock has a high metabolism and higher then normal body temp, has since a baby. Again, Thank You...Jay and Maggie Note: The amounts I posted were the amounts he ate not amounts given..<br><br>Post edited by: Jayd, at: 2010/03/06 20:44
  9. This week's Amazon is the Red-browed, Red-topped or Red-crowned Amazon Parrot (Amazona rhodocorytha). The Red-browed Amazon is among the largest of Amazon parrots, adults averaging ~ 13.8 - 15.7 inches (~35 - 40 cm) in length and 13.2 - 22.9 oz (375 - 650 g) in weight - with males usually being heavier. The most distinctive feature of the species is the red forehead and crown, which fades toward the nape to a reddish-purple tinged with blue. The lores (the regions between the eyes and bill on the side of a bird's head) are yellow-orange with cheeks and neck blue. They have a horn-colored upper beak that becomes pink at the base, orange-brown irises and grey legs. Their eyes are large and visually appealing. Males and females look alike. Although the yellow lores (the regions between the eyes and bill on the side of a bird's head) may extend downward on to the throat in females, whereas in males the lower part of the lores is blue. There are exceptions and the only way to guarantee the gender is to DNA test. Young birds look like adults, but the hindcrown becomes washed with green. The occiput to the back of neck is green. The feathers are edged black and the lores (the regions between the eyes and bill on the side of a bird's head) are yellow. The ear coverts (feathers covering the ears) to forecheeks and throat are blue. There is a little red on the bases of the two outermost secondary feathers and a little red on the side tail feathers. The bill is pale pink tipped with grey/white and the eyes are brown. They are endemic to Central-eastern Brazil where they inhabit humid lowland forests to montane forests (interior highlands to 3300 feet or 1000 meters) and estuarine mangroves. Red-browed Amazons like to roost and feed in the tops of primary forest trees, and are usually seen in groups, occasionally even large flocks, intermingling with other parrot species, specifically the Orange-wing Amazons. Fun Fact: Red-topped Amazon Parrots often roost and feed together with Orange-Wing Amazons. Once a common parrot in its range, the Red-Brow Amazon is now extinct across a large portion of its natural range due to deforestation, human encroachment and poaching or trapping for the pet trade. There are so few left that some populations are genetically isolated. It is estimated that there is 250 mature birds or less left in the wild. Efforts are being made to save this species through captive breeding programs but the Red-topped Amazon is one of the most endangered of all neotropical parrots. The species may only survive in captivity. Unfortunately, captive numbers are not large and the gene pool is limited. Many of the captive birds are closely related. Due to its critically endangered status, it really is highly recommended that any captive ` specimen be placed into a well-managed breeding program. http://ibc.lynxeds.com/video/red-browed-amazon-amazona-rhodocorytha/bird-bush-opening-bill-second-individual-appearing http://www.avianweb.com/redbrowedamazonparrots.html http://www.parrots.org/index.php/encyclopedia/profile/red_browed_amazon/
  10. No change except he is still losing weight, he's down to 432 gram's yet he eats so much. Daily he eats [approx] 6 tbs smash, 2 tbs seed mix, 4 tbs rice milk with crushed pellets, Veggies: 3 grapes,2-3 sugar snap peas, greens, 1 carrot stick, 1/4 slice apple,2-3 bites squash, a bite of yogurt/cottage cheese, 1 unsalted pretzel and 1 tsp pasta etc...We keep getting the same report,*He's not adsorbing nutrients..* they don't know whats wrong!!! I hate writing these, We want him well...We can't wait for him to go to sleep and rest at night, then we can't wait for his wake-up time so we know he's ok...At times he looks so tired...

  14. In the home that the fids graciously lets us share with them, their day begins at 9am due to my (Maggie) work schedule. When Jay gets up, he has to clear his sinuses. This signals the start of a new day. In the living room we have the six large birds and in the bird room, we have the remainder of Spock's flock. From the main room, you can hear six good mornings. You hear one good morning from the other room plus the wonderful chirping of small bird greetings. When he reaches the living room, Jay replies with an individual good morning and scritch for each of the birds (I join in this fun routine on my days off). The first one that Jay lets out is Joey (the 3 year old rescue) and makes his way to the kitchen to make their morning smash. At this point and time, Joey commences to imitate Jay clearing out his sinuses, sneezing and coughing followed by Tango (our huge 'Too) doing the same thing. Then, Joey starts "tooting" two or three times and Spock starts doing the same...(we did not teach these birds to do this) while Salsa is in the background laughing and Freddy is yelling "Pretty Fred". About this time, Jay has the water running and Spock and Joey start yelling "Good water" and start imitating the sound of running water. Then Joey and Spock start imitating the sound of the buttons being pushed on the microwave and the door being opened and shut. I call from work at this time to check on Jay and I hear seven "hello"s answer the phone when he answers. If Jay's not fast enough with the food, Joey and Spock do the phone ring and Good Water game until he comes over to feed them...This is in the first half-hour of the day, seven days a week, (except when Spock doesn't feel good and he is quiet)... Maggie and Jay{Feel-good-0002006E} --------- ;)
  15. When our phone rings, we have 7 fid's that say *Hello*, and we feel like we own 7 microwaves.....<br><br>Post edited by: Jayd, at: 2010/03/05 20:07
  16. All our fid's have is us, don't ever take anything for granted, in a wink of a eye everything can change. We can have a perfect bird safe house and they can find a bead or piece of alum foil, or chew on a sponge when were not looking, or maybe a open door, a boiling pan of hot water and we turn our backs for one second...There's always going to be some sadness in the Forum, that's life, please read the good posts as well as the sad one's, we have to be aware at all times, so much can happen in one second...Jay

  21. The Forum is the best...These people you can count on...Sit back and keep a open eye... Jay. Karma for your concern...
  22. Yes it's sad, so many of our feathered friend have lost or are losing there natural habitats, and when there original homes are destroyed, what will be missing from our captive raised fid's? Pearllyn, 1st post Karma, Thanks... Jay:)
  23. This week's Amazon of the Week is a Yellow-headed Amazon and it is a favorite among Bird keepers. It is also deeply disturbing that it is almost extinct in the wild. Believe it ot not, the Yellow-headed Amazon (Amazona oratrix), also known as the Yellow-headed Parrot and Double Yellow-headed Amazon, is an endangered amazon parrot of Mexico and northern Central America. It runs 15 to 17 inches in length and is stocky with a short tail and a yellow head. It's favored habitat is in mangrove forests or forests near rivers or other bodies of water. It is a popular pet and an excellent talker. The Yellow-headed Amazon is robust with a bright green body, yellow on the head, dark scallops on the neck, red at the bend of the wing, yellow thighs, rounded wings and a square tail. {There's also a number of mutations in captivity.} The flight feathers are blackish to bluish violet with a red patch on the outer secondaries. The base of the tail also has a red patch, which is usually hidden. The outer tail feathers have yellowish tips. The bill is horn-colored. The eye ring is whitish in Mexican birds and grayish in others. The popularity of Yellow-headed Amazons as a pet continues to fuel poaching efforts, which have nearly driven it to extinction in the wild. The wild population has declined from 70,000 to 7000 or less in the last twenty years. An estimated 90% of poached Yellow-headed Amazons die before they are sold. Jay;) http://www.avianweb.com/yellowheadedamazon.html http://www.avesinternational.com/dyha.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow-headed_Amazon Post edited by: Jayd, at: 2010/02/27 05:57<br><br>Post edited by: Jayd, at: 2010/02/27 05:59

  25. Karma....Top notch Jill, Salsa and her 3 friends still made that same noise at 12 weeks old when I feed them there formula, after they were done eating in the evenings, they'd all do their "nite-calls" all 4 at once for about 10 min's:woohoo: Jay:P
