HELP!!!!!! my CAG eats only sunflower seeds!!!!!
Luvparrots replied to 7abasheeko's topic in Bird Food
If my parrots could eat only what they wanted, they would eat seeds all day too. I feed my parrots the things I want them to eat for breakfast, first thing in the morning when they are hungriest. I find I have the most success then. I do not give me parrots sunflowers as sunflowers are full of fats. They like safflower seeds which are low in fats and very good for them. You new CAG is still getting acquainted so I wouldn't worry about his talking and let him settle in more. Just keep talking to him so he can relax. It takes time for some CAGs to feel welcome so enjoy the getting to know time. -
I have trouble getting Ana Grey, the Tag, to bed. She will go into the birdroom and sit on a perch on her cage but when I try to step her up to go in her cage.... off she flies. Sometimes I have switch off the lights in the room and then there is no problem stepping her up in the semi-darkness. Now Louie, the Zon, and Sterling, the Cag, are sweethearts at bed time.

So I was having a very pleasant quiet morning when all of a sudden I hear this parrot screaming and flapping around with pure terror in his voice. With my heart in my throat and terrible thoughts running through my mind and visions of disaster in my sights I ran to the bird room. All is quiet with Louie and Ana Grey but Sterling is thrashing around as if he were dying!!!!! I quickly open the cage door and there is my sweet Sterling thrashing and clawing around at the top of the cage ceiling he has his beak caught in one of those screwing toy hangers and he is struggling to free himself. Janet to the rescue!!!!!! I knew I was in for numerous scratches and bites but I couldn't let Sterling break some part of his beak or leg or any part really!!!!! So I cuddled him in one hand and as he scratched and clawed I found the lock on the toy hanger and opened it enough for Sterling to free his beak. Then of course, I got a bite, because whose fault was it that Sterling got caught????? Why mine, of course!!!!! Sterling is fine and has forgiven me. I'm just grateful that I hadn't left for the store yet and was there to "save" the day!!!! Sterling's nick name is "Bam Bam" because he is a big clumsy fool. Remember it was Sterling that got his leg all tangled up in that chain months before. I guess it's a guy thing!!! LOL!!!! Needless to say, I spent several minutes checking all the locking toy hangers in all the cages and at all the perches to make sure they were all locked nice and tight!!!!

My greys are also shoulder creatures. They are both flighted so I just flick them off and they go to the many ceiling perches I have in my home. They soon learn that there are other places to sit and still be in the middle of everything. It has not changed anything with their caring for me. I let them know they are loved by talking to them and letting them know what I am doing or where I am going.

I have folding wire travel cages for my parrots. I like them because they are are quick to assemble and also easy to store. I use them for cages for my three when I go to my daughter's home for the weekend or so. They are large enough for my parrots to climb around in and small enough to be convenient.

CAGrico, Lucia is beautiful, I look forward to seeing and hearing about your new zon in the Amazon Room. Can't wait to see your Amazon post (hint, hint)!!!

I have my three in the same room all the time. They are not friends but I keep a close eye on them and they do have a "pecking" order that they have figured out for themselves. Why do you assume that your parrots will not like each other and would be pluckers??

My fids are not real good pellet eaters. I mainly keep pellets in their cages only to make sure my parrots always have something to eat. Zupreem Veggie Blend Flavor is the pellet that my fids all will pick at. Louie, I believe actually does eat some. Sterling Gris tosses it around and Ana Grey munches the pellets into fine grain and leaves it in the bowl. I give my birdies lots of "real" food and it makes us all happy.
-
Now I believe differently, I would think having the "favorite" spraying your fids would be better then the "unliked". That to me would mean it must be all right if "Dad" is bathing/spraying me. In children to me it was always easier if the "favorite" parent did the asking or sending to bed.

My three love spraying/baths. They open their wings and turn and get totally wet. I use a very fine sprayer/mister I got from the beauty shop/hair stylist. I spray them upward so that they are not really hit in the face. If I forget to spray them, their cages are totally soaked with them splashing in their water bowls, big mess. I do this a couple times a week in the earlier part of the day so they will all dry out. I mix 1/2 water/1/2 aloe vera juice.

I am a great fan of pomegranate juice and my grey loves it! She and I share a glass once a day. Ana Grey loves to eat with me so she is always there when I eat.

SKW, I believe it all depends on the atmosphere a parrot is in. My two greys came to me as newly weaned babies. They were bred by very caring an involved breeders. Both are very independent and self-assured parrots. My zon was put outside when his male owner became sick and the ladies of the house more or less called him "wild" when I purchased him. He will not let me touch him but he is very sweet and active. And will go in and out of his cage as I ask him. So I believe, it is how you when you get your parrot treat him/her and how confident you are as a parront. I was a member of this forum for about two months before I got my first parrot. I asked questions and everyone was very helpful to answer them. I did oodles of reading because all the questions have been asked before and the answers are all here if you are willing to look.

I have a TAG, a CAG and an Blue Front male amazon. Louie my zon is a real clown and as active as any parrot I have every seen. He loves to fight with his toys and swing round and round on the boings of my home. He speaks Hindu and is learning English and he is very good at it. So to me, amazons are great talkers just like greys. Greys and amazon are very intelligent parrots, I have both and I am very satisfied with them all.

how to get a amazon to eat his veggies
Luvparrots replied to Codys Mom's topic in Cricket's Amazon Room
My amazon loves fresh snap peas. He could eat those all day if I let him. He has a pretty good appetite as he is always moving and fighting with his toys. I very active guy my Louie! -
Very nice Keywe. I think come next spring I am going to look into finding a carpenter to make my fids an aviary. I appreciate everyone's ideas!
-
Very nice Rebecca! Amali should love them.
-
I have a couple of animal ears for my parrots. My Louie is a chewer so he usually is the one to throw them off of the top of the cages.
-
Well, howdy Joey and Blossom. What a pair of cuties!!!
-
Amali certainly is a real cutie! Luv those TAGs! Thanks Rebecca!
-
Hi Rebecca, so glad you and Amali have joined the Grey family! I look forward to hearing more about Amali and how the two of you are bonding! Pictures please, we luv pictures of the dark eyed young greys.

I have three parrots, a TAG, female, my first parrot, very spoiled and aggressive with the two males I have. Ana Grey is the smallest and feistiest of my flock, she is 3 1/2 years old. Louie is my BF Amazon, a re-home and very sweet and self-assured. He will fight with my other two parrots if they don't give him ground or pester him. He is 3 years 10 months old. I have never held him or given him a head scratch but he follows me around and goes back in his cage when I ask. My CAG is the largest and is 8 months old. He will go after what he wants and the other two will back off if Sterling Gris wants something or a certain spot to perch. When he gets older I think my other two better watch out and stay on his good side. As you can see my three do not love each other but will tolerate each other and I do have to watch them like a hawk so that everyone remains in one healthy piece. Just like my three grown children use to be!! LOL!!! My parrots are all fully flighted and out of their cages all day.
