1. Thanks guys! I of course think the baby is beautiful. I saw the parents yesterday and they are Gorgeous! All of his breeder birds are knock out gorgeous with the most vibrant feathering I have ever seen. He is an exceptional breeder whose care of his birds is an example that all breeders should follow. I feel lucky to have found him. Do you notice the second set of red feathers on the wing? The breeder father has that extra red so passed it on to the baby. Pat, I still do not know if it is a boy or girl. There was a problem with the cards he was sending to ABI and finally the problem was figured out and new samples submitted so I should know by the end of this week. I was assuming a boy because it is soooo big. But the mother of this baby is larger than the father so it may still be a girl. I am in love with the baby either way. I got to hold and pet and it cuddled up on my chest and went to sleep. I did not get to do this with Whisper so I am really enjoying it.
2. How about if you slowly conditioned him to outside the cage. Instead of taking him to another room when you get him off the cage..try staying in the room with the cage in sight for a while until he enjoys being off the cage but still has it in sight for security and then gradually getting him further from it. As for getting him out of the cage..Can you lure him out with his favorite treat. Only use that treat for getting out. Also take all perches out except for one until he learns to step up. When out of cage put him on floor and work on step up until it is automatic for him to step up when you say it. Use lots of praise and treats when he obeys. Of course you have to leave food in the cage when you are gone but when home remove the food so he has to come out to eat. Feed him on a nearby playstand so that he associates it with being fed. Feed the good stuff at this time.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/07/12 17:08

6. I visited my baby at the breeders yesterday. Of course I took some pics. I could not believe how fast they grow.
7. When I checked out at the groceries I told the clerk "the healthy stuff is for the bird. The junk food is for me".
8. Mark, I am very sorry for your loss. Don't give up the idea of having a bird. I did a google and it seems cockatiels wean at 10-12 weeks. It sounds like your bird was not properly weaned when you got it. Don't give up just next time do your research and find a breeder who properly weans the babies.
9. Ah Pat. Sorry to hear you are under the weather. Get better soon.
10. Great video. Glad he got over his camera shyness. He does sound just like you. For those of you whose birds are camera shy.. Here is what you do. Put the video camera on a tripod and leave it near the cage. After a while it will become just another piece of furniture to them and they won't pay any attention to it.
11. Did you guys notice you are asking for pics from a really old thread?
12. I found the same thing in Whisper's cage the other day. It has obviously clotted on it's own so nothing to worry about.
13. I am 52 yrs old and I guess I have reached an age when I don't give a crap what people think. It is rather liberating really. I don't have anything against cat people. I was just making an example of the way society labels anything that that is different.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/07/03 06:26
14. Hey Judy it could be worse. We could be crazy old cat ladies. You know the ones that have like 20 cats. I actually had someone say to me the other day " You take a bird to the vet?" I said "well yeah. Don't you take your pets to the vet?" Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/07/03 05:29

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/07/03 05:29
15. Yes, I will admit it. I am also a crazy old bird lady. At least I will be as soon as I get old. People I work with did not think too much about having one bird but when I mentioned I am getting a second one they are like WHAT? I think the fact that I live alone makes them think it even more so. They probably feel sorry for me. Poor thing, all she has is her birds. HA! So yes we are eccentric but also special. Not everyone will know the joy and special bond we have with our fids because not everyone is willing to do all that it takes and make the sacrifices it takes to have a relationship with these marvelous creatures. Today's society is basically selfish and self centered so that is one reason it is hard for them to understand.

My new baby DYH

Hopefully I will know this evening.
17. Whisper goes through a 5 lb bag in about 6-8 weeks. Have you tried the Power Treats? It is Whisper's favorite thing. You can only give them 3-5 per day though.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/07/02 03:09
18. Jeepers is a good looking bird. I think he is camera shy.
19. Thanks guys. I am glad you enjoyed the video. I will get some of the other up soon.
20. I don't see this very often but Whisper has done it when I have had to put her in her cage for some reason when I am still there and she wants OUT. She is nearly always out when I am home so I only see it occasionally.
21. Oh my! Have you tried putting PVC pipe over the chain to keep them from climbing up there?
22. Judy, that looks awesome. You took some wonderful pictures. Thanks for sharing them with us. I saw your post about your planned trip there and I googled mapquest to see how far it would be for me to join you. It was over 7 hrs. It sounds like you had a wonderful time.
23. Good. I think it is best you are playing it safe.
