1. A breeder pair is so bonded with each other that you are not welcome. A male will go to great lengths to protect his mate. Just like everything there are good breeders and bad breeders. The good breeders take care of their birds even though they are not pets. They have a mate and do not want to be your pet. The breeder that I recently got my baby Amazon from is in the process of building a paradise for his breeder birds. A jungle like setting with a waterfall, water mists that go off throughout the day, lighting that comes on slowly simulating sunrise and sunset, side doors that open up during the day weather permitting to allow fresh air and sunshine. When it is finished he is going to have me take photos for his website. I will be sure to post some. I am one of the few people that have been in his aviary. His breeder pairs are absolutely gorgeous birds. he has a pair of Yellow Napes that are the most beautiful I have ever seen. The same for my babies parents. Absolutely gorgeous. Obviously well taken care of. They also have regular vet care. He told me that recently the avian vet went through his entire aviary at an expense of $10,000. I can only imagine what the new aviary is costing him to build. Something that was kind of funny..He has a pair of Green Wing Macaws. When we stepped inside the male stretched out his wings to cover the female and protect her. I thought that was kind of sweet.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/08/11 03:44
2. It sounds like the noise Whisper made right before she regurged for me. She was being especially lovey lovey at the time too. We had another episode where she made the sound again, was really affectionate toward my fingers but I distracted her before any gurge took place. It scared me when I heard it too but when she puked I knew what it was. Just like you I looked around to see if there was something she could have eaten. I don't think you need to worry. If it was breathing problems it would continue.
3. I am so happy you have your baby back again.
4. It looks good. As far as I am concerned there is no such thing as a bad rescue.
5. He is a very handsome boy. I don't use the seed catchers on my cage.
6. Ahh Pat in a perfect world that would certainly be true. When my husband and I were together we had a dog. The dog was sick and vomiting so forcefully over a period of time that I was afraid and I don't get afraid easily. I called the dogs vet and got an emergency answering service whose first question was "is the dog a patient of dr so and so?" I said yes but what if she was not. If not then I had to take the dog somewhere else. So dear Pat in this cold world we live in they will not crawl out of bed if you are not a regular patient. This vet by the way is right down the street from me.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/08/09 22:49
7. But what about an emergency situation? The vet in Louisville does not take emergency call. Their patient's are referred to vet hospital without an avian vet that is another 30 mins away from there. Total nearly 2 hrs in an emergency. The local here would not see them because they are not a patient. I have never had an emergency but it would not be good, It would be me alone in a car with a sick or injured bird driving 2 hrs while nearly hysterical. I guess there is just no win situation for the emergency. I will just have to hope and pray I never have one. Thanks for your input. I guess I just need to hear it from someone not emotionally involved.
8. Well Kim you would know better than anyone about Dan. Dayo is just the best.
9. Sorry but this will be a long post. I am really upset and undecided about what to do for a vet. Whisper has been going to a wonderful vet that even though she is not avian certified her practice is exotics and she has been treating birds for 18 yrs. She also has a very close relationship with the avian vet who is about 1 1/2 hrs away in Louisville. So I felt comfortable with her expertise and she was wonderful with Whisper. She took emergency call and the one in Louisville does not so I felt it would be better to have someone near for emergencies especially since she is so experienced. She moved to Iowa where she took a position with Iowa state teaching an exotics program. She had an associate in her practice but she only has 2 yrs vet experience and that is not enough for me. The vet who bought her practice does not treat exotics. Neither of them take emergency call. Emergency call is taken by another vet in town and he does treat exotics but of course not avian certified either. While I was fostering the Cockatoo I rescued and rehomed I took her to the vet in Louisville to check him out since I new my vet would be leaving. He has a terrific reputation. Treats the Eagles for the state and is very well respected avian vet. He sees more birds in a week than most vets do in a year. The breeder of my Amazon thinks he is the greatest and has a long relationship with him. he is working with the drug companies on some trials and i don't know if you all know it or not but there is very soon going to be a vaccine for PBFD in large part because of his work. But..when I took the Cockatoo to see him I was not really impressed with him or his office. He may be a very intelligent man but his communication skills were sorely lacking. When he called me back with test results he said some things that made no sense to me at all and when I questioned him he got kind of huffy and smart. He said some things that would have went right over the head of someone without a medical background but I questioned. So I don't know what to do. I want my birds to have the best care possible but I also want a vet that handles my bird gently and is able to answer my questions. The third option is to check out the vet here that is taking emergency call and see what he is like but as I said he is not Avian certified. I worry about if an emergency happened being able to have them seen by someone who is capable. What are your thoughts? 10. Whisper had to have hers trimmed not too long ago too. She just doesn't do enough chewing to keep it trimmed down herself. It it painless for them. Just like you getting your fingernails filed.
11. This site has some good info and a state by state listing. http://www.avianwelfare.org/index.htm Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/08/09 16:08

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/08/09 16:09
12. I got some pics of Tango doing what Amazons do best. They are known for being great climbers. It is sooo hard for me to believe he is only 8 1/2 weeks old.
13. Have you tried giving him the nuts first? I know that if I put almonds in the food dish along with the sweet potatoes that I want whisper to eat she will eat the almonds and may or may not eat the sweet potatoes and fruit. So I started waiting and holding the nuts til the end. Maybe you could do just the opposite with Harley.
14. What a cutie. Keep the stories coming. We love them!
15. Congratulations! I can't wait to see more pics.

17. My baby is home. Meet Tango. He is 8 1/2 week old DYH Amazon. I am finishing out his weaning. I have hand fed before. It was a while ago so the breeder gave me a refresher course. He only lives 40 mins away and we talk everyday so he and I both feel confident about my weaning him. He is already perching and can fly all the way across the room! Isn't he beautiful? 18. Wow what a difference! He has really blossomed and thrived under you loving care.
19. Happy hatch day Ana Grey. Sounds like you had a greyt one!
20. I am so sad to hear about another lost bird. Others here have recovered their bird. I am praying that you find yours too. Look low to the ground in shrubs too.
21. That is just about the cutest thing I have ever seen. Funny how he looked like he was sneaking over there.
