1. Congrats! She is so smart I KNEW it was a girl.
  2. That is hilarious. I had something like that today. Whisper just today started saying "You wanta go outside?" Of course she sounds just like me so every time she says it the dog runs over to the door thinking she's going outside. She then looks back at me like "well are we going or not?:
  3. I am not sure about how it is treated but the first step would be the blood work to screen for heavy metals. What makes you think the bird has heavy metal poisoning? That would cost what most blood work cost I would think. I think that birds with heavy metal poisoning have vomiting and eventually seizures. If that perch your were talking about was stainless steel then it should not be a problem. My vet told me once that some birds can be in a cage for 20 yrs with lead, zinc ect and never get poisoned because they didn't chew on it.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/07/28 00:45
  4. Whisper won't touch her concrete perch.
  5. Ahh Pat you have such a big heart. I am happy for Harley to be getting a good home.
  6. I recently taught Whisper to say "Who's the boss?" I knew there would come a time when it would be hysterical and it happened this morning. I was very busy cleaning this morning and I guess she got frustrated because she wasn't getting the attention she thought she deserved. She decided to take out that frustration on one of her toys. She was beating the crap out of the toy. Banging it as hard as she could and screaming "Who's the boss?, Who's the boss?" It was hysterical.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/07/26 17:03

Yes I will. The Cockatoo that I rescued and rehomed gave me a little taste of what it is like to clean up after 2 birds.
  8. I think that Whisper is too young (only 20 months next week) for this gurge to be anything sexual. It was over in a few seconds and I did not acknowledge it anyway. The vet told me it could happen at any age. I agree with you guys that it is best not to encourage it or stimulate them sexually in any way.
  9. Well, at least your Sachi is a quiet bird. To answer your question, Whisper is not really what I would call extroverted. But she Yaks all day long and likes a lot of attention. If she were I would not be getting the Amazon. Now that will be by extroverted bird.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/07/26 04:32
  10. Somebody has been bad. Very bad.

Very soft and gentle all over my fingers and then she kind of whimpered and then came the upchuck. I know just what you mean about the baby breath sounds. I live alone and I am the only person in her life so all her sounds are for me.
  13. That is wonderful news. I am so happy for you.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/07/25 13:03

I know I have her attention then. I just said it every now and then In a clear distinct voice. Sometimes I would use her name sometimes I would not. It took 3 days but today she said it. So far she will say EVERY thing that I decide I want to teach her. Say it with inflection in your voice the way the old fart oops  I mean Dave was explaining.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/07/25 02:58
  17. It is very dangerous to trade spit with you bird. Your mouth is full of bacteria that they have no resistance to. You can make your bird sick. If you don't believe me, Ask your vet.

  19. right now Whisper has a lot of her flight feathers grown back in and everytime we get to this point I think about leaving her flighted. Then I will read something like this and that is enough for me. This goes to show it only takes one unpredictable thing to happen and they could be gone. It is more than just losing the bird. It is knowing that she would most likely suffer and die at the hands of a predator or succumb to the elements and starvation. Just too risky for me. I am not trying to start a debate. Pat I am sooo relieved that it turned out well. I know you would have been devastated if you lost one of your birds.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/07/24 14:33

  21. Wish I could have seen that. They are so funny sometimes.
  22. Caitlin, a Cockatoo is a slower moving bird than a grey so it may not be something you could do. Even though the vet assistant does it to Whisper. I was just making the point that you can't always take the bite and sometimes you have to try other things. When I got Whisper I was somewhat worried that she would choose my husband over me because he went to work early and got home in the early afternoon so would be able to spend more time with her. We separated and he is no longer here so no worry about that anymore. I guess I misunderstood I thought you had said he was to be your bird. Good luck. I will be thinking about you. I know you will work things out. Just to clarify. You don't actually grab the neck. You make a circle with your forefinger and thumb. Very loose. It prevents them from reaching down with their beak to bite. No squeezing was taking place. Just wanted you to know. I have watched the vet do it many times as she does not use towel. One of the things I like about her.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/07/24 03:16
  23. Dayo sounds so manly. He is truly adorable. I have the same cage and right now the same crock dish sitting out on the ledge like that.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/07/24 03:01
