My Mother in law had to much to drink.
Char replied to Supernova's topic in Photography & Video Room
Very funny. Before I clicked on it I was thinking " Oh my God, I hope she didn't get at the bird while she was drinking". -
Karma to you for figuring it out about the swing. I am happy to hear it was something so easy to remedy. That does not surprise me at all since Whisper has a lot of toy phobias too. She might have been fine with it in the beginning perhaps one day it bumped her the wrong way and she fell or something so after that was afraid if it. Nobody thought you were a bad parront. You were obviously trying to get to the bottom of it and took her to the vet and had her checked out which is what a good parront would do. You were a greyt parront for noticing she was afraid of the swing.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/06/13 00:51

Thanks for the update. I gave you karma for going the extra mile for your birds health.

He is a great looking bird. Thanks for sharing the photos.

Unless you can show us a photo I think I think it would be useless and possibly dangerous for your bird for us to try to imagine and guess what you are seeing. I think you need to have it looked at by a vet asap.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/06/12 14:08

That looks so awesome!

I don't know anything else you can do Pat. Freaky things just happen sometimes.

It is the truth! Whisper is 18 months old. At about a year old she had 5 or 6 things she said regularly. At about15 months she started adding about 1 new phrase per week to her repetoire. For the past 2 weeks she has started saying a new phrase every DAY. Yakkety, Yakkety Yak. You can't shut her up. LOL

These are great articles you have quoted and very informative. I was happy to see you give the original authors credit at the end of the post.

By holes, do you mean lack of feathers, bare spots, or breaks in the skin? Can you post a picture?

1. My opinion on this is that as you say your son will be involved in a lot of activities even more so as he gets older. Greys have a reputation for bonding to one person. It is likely the grey will bond to someone else in the family rather than your son. If the grey is spending a lot of time in your office and you are providing most of the care it will probably be you. Thus defeating the purpose of getting him his own bird. 2. The sleeping cage in your son's room is only feasible if the bird can get 10-12 hrs sleep in there. If your son has even the slightest allergies then the bedroom would be the worst place to keep a dusty bird. 3. Separate cages are an absolute must. I have looked at the devided cages before and I was still worried about one bird still being able to get the toes of the other on. I am probably over cautious on this. 4. Someone else can probably answer this one better than me. 5. Sometimes greys tend to do better with anothe type of bird than with another grey. Competition thing. But there are exception and members here who have more than one grey.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/06/11 15:02

Wow! Very nice drawing. You are so talented.

It could be toys that you have in the cage. Whisper is very afraid of any kind of large toys. They have to be small and introduced slowly. There have been times when she was obviously afraid of her cage. It was after I tried to replace her perches with better ones or a new toy. What do you have in her cage? Take everything out and see if it is the cage or something in the cage and introduce things to it slowly and test for a reaction from her first.

That is sweet. The cockatoo I rescued a few weeks ago regurgitated for me last night during a cuddle session. All I can say is she falls in love too quickly. The little hussy!. Whisper still has not done this for me. She must be slow to commit.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/06/11 03:27

I read your other thread also concerning the smell and agree this could be ANOTHER sign of illness. If she is sick it could be making her grumpy. If she is in pain and you are handling her when she feels the pain she could associate you with the pain. I have read that parrots bite for 2 reason. 1. Out of fear and 2. We teach them to bite. For instance, she wants to be left alone and you don't read the body language so she bites you. She learns that a bite will get the desired result. Or, if she wants to go back to her cage and you take her there after a bite then she will bite when she wants to go back. ect.. It would help to know exactly what is happening when she bites. If you are petting or scratching her when it happens then it could be you are touching pin feathers and that hurts. I am no expert but I feel she is a little too young to be asserting her independence just yet. Whisper is 18 months and has just reached this stage. But they are all different. The other day I walked up to Whisper's cage and she freaked out and ran from me for no apparent reason. I realized I had on a new blouse with a jungle print on it and the flowers on it kinda looked like eyes. It scared her. I changed the blouse and she was fine. Could it be something like this that is scaring her? Even a cap or glasses they have not seen before or something like that can scare them. Is she getting 10-12 hours of total darkness and quiet at night? If they don't get enough sleep they can be grumpy. Is it a hard bite or is she just beaking you? Some more details would help.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/06/11 03:22

I Take Whisper in the shower with me. Start out slowly by just letting her perch on the shower rod or a shower perch if you are afraid she will fly off in fear. It is kinda high up, a few times. She will get some benefit from the steam. After a few times of doing this move on to taking her in the shower with you. I wait until I have completed my shower and then reach up and make her step up on my hand. I first started out by just letting her get a little bit wet. Use one hand to bounce the water on her rather than letting it hit her full force. Gradually increase how wet she gets. Whisper doesn't like it but now tolerate it rather well. She would panic when I first tried givin her a bath so I backed off and approached it with this slow method. I also turn the water coole when it is time for her to get wet. She likes the water cooler. How often do you clean the botom of the cage. Whisper gets bathed only once per week and her cage is cleaned every day. There is not an odor. If her poop is smelling strong then it may be time for a trip to the vet. I would not use the air freshners. I smoke but not indoors. I wash my hands as soon as I come back in the house. Maybe it does take a while to build up and it is not necessary to wash them every time but I can smell it on my hands. Also I work in healthcare so I am accustomed to washing my hands a million times a day.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/06/10 16:02

When a bird is molting their feather will just fall out like that especially during a petting session. Whisper is 18 months and she has all new tail feathers except for 2. She has molted her flight feathers twice. She is always losing feathers. I used to worry over every little feather too but I have learned to relax about it. I think that because we know Greys are prone to plucking we are more anxious about the feathers being lost. If Whisper wasn't replacing them she would be bald by now.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/06/10 03:01

Thanks for the update. I am glad to know he is doing better.

Congrats! You are going to have your hands full. Literally. They are big birds.

Whisper used to call after me when I was leaving in the morning. I felt guilty too. Since the Cockatoo is here she doesn't even pay any attention. When I walk in the door in the evening they are as quiet as mice but who knows what went on while I was gone. As you could see on that video the Cockatoo was a trouble maker.

Whisper has 2 different barks. The big dog of the neighbors in the back and the annoying little Pomeranian next door. Sometimes when the does the Pom bark over and over and over it gets on my nerves a little. Okay, a lot.
