I don't know what your current situation is but I hope you are able to come to a resolution. Perhaps you could offer to pay your mother a fee for keeping the bird until you are ready to find a place where you can live with him? Maybe you could visit as often as possible and help with the upkeep, the cage cleaning and spend time with Smokey? I wouldn't know what to do if I had to move somewhere where I couldn't take my animals. Perhaps you could look for an appt where they will let you place a deposit to have an animal? I hope you are able to work things out- Smokey deserves your love and devotion.
I'm so happy for you! I bet it really did make you feel warm inside seeing that your work with her has accomplished so much. Maybe you'll end up with a cuddle bug grey, you'd be truly lucky to have one!
It can be hard to switch them off of seeds but I'd try to do it as soon as you can. Try soaking the pellets in some warm water or apple juice and give to the bird by hand.
When I was trying to wean Lyric I'd try anything to get him to eat. The best method I found was by letting him share stuff off a plate with me while I was eating. Make a big plate of brown rice mixed with whatever veggies you like and eat some with your little one. Let her watch you enjoying it and eventually she'll just have to try it to see how good it is. The only drawback to this is your bird may become very spoiled like mine and expect warm cooked meals several times a day and always want to share your meals with you!
It's really good she is stepping up for you already, sounds like you are getting along great.
That is such wonderful news, it just goes to show that patience and love can eventually win over a grey's heart. I would definitely keep moving at Nokkvi's pace and let him dictate what the next step forward will be.
What a cute puppy! And, that is a great photo as you've been told. I can't believe you are already thinking of getting another puppy so soon, you are going to have your hands full. I'm glad to hear the bird and puppy are getting along well.
Hi Rick and Cosmo. I definitely can relate to having a spoiled grey, and I haven't taken a vacation since two years ago when my baby TAG was hatched. So, you see there are lots of people on here who can relate to you, you are now in good company!
Hi everyone! I have been blessed with two new African grey Timneh chicks from one of my pairs. I was able to snap a photo yesterday, the oldest is 8 days old and the youngest is 6 days old. You can only see the head of the oldest one in this picture. I will keep you updated as they grow... two weeks to go and I'll be a busy momma bird... <br><br>Post edited by: Lyric, at: 2008/10/27 16:23
Just wondering if you ever decided on a name? I liked both your choices- actually Echo was one I was considering when I named my Tag Lyric. Hope all is going well with Fluffy/Echo/Sterling!
Keep your hopes up, my pairs have both laid a clutch of infertile eggs and then the next clutch was successful. Sometimes it takes a little practice for them to get everything right.
You may want to let her sit the allotted time on this egg even if it isn't fertile to give her a little break from laying. Making eggs is hard on a female bird and she deserves a little break!
Hello and welcome to the forum! It's exciting that you are getting a new grey. My advice to you is to get the 5 month old bird, handfeeding and weaning a baby grey is not recommended for someone without some experience. The 5 month old bird should be weaned and ready to go. Best of luck to you and I hope you enjoy your new friend.<br><br>Post edited by: Lyric, at: 2008/10/24 23:01
I'm glad to hear that you figured out what caused the fire and I'm SO glad that Cricket and the rest of your flock is alright. Cricket may be mad about the loss of some freedom but safety is the important issue here.
Those are so cute! I can't believe he let you put those on his head and just stayed still. I was also wondering about the different colored toenails, I've never seen this before on a grey, does anyone else's greys have different colored nails like that? He is adorable.

Your bird may just be getting overly bored in his sleep cage without anything to do, the toy was a good idea. He also could be itchy from going through the molt and could be breaking off some feathers due to this itchiness. Don't forget to mist or bathe often as the bird molts to help ease them through this transition. I agree, they are magnificent birds and I think they are just beautiful too!
I have never vaccinated my birds. I think if your bird is going to be exposed to lots of other unknown birds then perhaps it is a good idea, but if you have only a very few birds and they are not exposed to others I don't see much point. This is just my opinion of course and I'm sure others with more experience or actual avian vets may have another point of view about it.
