  1. Hello Jocelyne- welcome to you and flock! I hope you enjoy it here and share some stories with us along the way.
  2. Hi Chelsie and Otis- welcome here!
  3. Hello Marianna- welcome to you and George! Hope you like it here and find answers to any questions you may be looking for. We have members on here from all over the world and it is quite refreshing to have different viewpoints and ideas. George looks very pretty and I'm sure she likes her name very much!
  4. I'm glad you got the problems with Saphira's toenail resolved by an avian specialist. It's great that her and her new playmate are getting on so well together. I bet you can't wait to get both birds back with you!
  5. Congratulations on getting a new baby grey! I wish you many happy years of companionship and love together. I also believe the babies should be allowed to fledge and gain their confidence before being clipped. It helps them emotionally later in life. Since yours is already clipped perhaps once the wings grow out again you can allow him to learn to fly. If you like the white cage better then get it, but it will be harder to see the bird inside in a light colored cage. I don't think the bird will care either way what color his home is.
  6. That's a cute video, she looks like a ham!
  7. Wow, what a steal! You did a great job with it too. Your B&G might not like it now but she will adapt. I think you did a good thing moving her into it, she'll have lots of room to flap and play whenever she's inside it. Way to go!
  8. I've had a few birds over the years that had problems with their beaks and the avian vet told me it was a nutritional problem. They had to be trimmed but she didn't put them to sleep to do it. (they weren't greys) Try offering more wood toys for the bird to play with and also perhaps try to improve the diet with more fruits and vegetables. Also, you may want to provide a concrete perch because sometimes they wipe their beaks on those and it helps file it down a little.
  9. You're welcome! Glad I could help. Their cage is their safe place and most don't like it disturbed too much. It's better to work with your training and interactions away from it. I'm happy you are working with Alfie and making a better life for him.
  10. I really like to watch fireworks, but I could do without the loud ones. The kids around my neighborhood like to set them off for days before the 4th of July. It really bothers my dogs but my birds don't seem to be too bothered. I also leave the tv on for them during this time and try to keep things as normal as possible so they won't be too upset.
  11. The gentle nibbling is okay, greys use their beaks as we would our hands. He does need to learn when he is using too much pressure though. Keep in mind that most greys are kind of territorial about their cages. I would work with him more in a neutral territory away from his cage. It sounds like you are making great progress with your grey and you should keep up the good work. When he starts to bite too hard, give him a dirty look and say "No" or "no bite" and then turn your back on him and ignore him for a bit or return him to his cage. Do not give a lot of attention for the bite however or he will be excited and try to do it again just for the reaction- they like the drama.
  12. The new puppy really could be causing the behavior problems you are seeing now. Greys don't like big changes in their lives and I'm sure he is seeing the puppy get a lot of attention that he is used to getting himself. Try to spend some special one-on-one time with your grey and reestablish your relationship with each other. I'd also recommend that you take him to another room away from his cage and work on the step-up command. This is a majorly important thing with birds, like teaching a dog to come and sit- it is one of the basics. Good luck to you!
  13. Just thought I'd bring this post back up again-- from the deep deep depths of the grey forum and ask- do any of the newer members notice a telepathic connection between them and their birds? Maybe noone else thinks this topic is interesting but I'm really quite fascinated by it. I wish some more researchers would explore the subject. I know, it's like UFO's, bigfoot (right Dan?) and Nessie, something people might have to see to believe. Check out the link and listen for yourself and let me know what you think about it!
  14. Gonzo looks really sweet and pretty, thanks for sharing your photo with us. Is he settling in nicely? By the way, Sheila, you asked about the Timneh's beaks- they start off black like a Congo's and they lighten up as the bird gets older. I can show you some pictures of Lyric when he was a baby and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between him and a Cag except maybe for the feather colors- although, his tail was also bright red when he was younger and still is very red for a Timneh (I think maybe the diet affects this). Hope this answers your question!
  15. Hi Jennifer, welcome here. It's great you are doing your research prior to jumping into the world of owning a grey. They are a lifetime commitment and do take lots of patience and work, but it is definitely worth it. I hope you find the answers you are looking for here. If you are very particular about what you feed your animals you may want to look into Harrison's organic diets for birds. Just do a search on the web and you'll find them easily.
  16. Zuri is a great name, very pretty! I can't wait to see some pictures of your new baby, I hope you can post some soon!
  17. Those are wonderful pictures, young love....ahhh. What pretty babies, I think maybe Charlie needs to go home with you!

    Alfie update

That sounds good! Are you able to give Alfie any treats by hand? Try sitting close to him and reading out loud, if you make eye contact do it briefly or out of the corner of your eye. Direct head on eye contact can be threatening for a prey animal. With time and patience you should be able to get closer and closer. Try playing with one of his toys in front of him. Curiosity may draw him closer. Good job!
  20. Hello Maxwell, welcome here. Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your grey. Greys sometimes go through a little period of bad attitudes around 2 years old, "terrible twos". This is like the equivalent of a teenager in humans. They are testing you to see what they can get by with and establishing some independence. Please don't give up on your grey. If he bites you, try not to holler, return him to his cage for a 10 minute time-out and try with him again later. He may be expressing his displeasure with something as well, has something changed in his environment or your appearance?
  21. Hi Michelle- I haven't seen you on here for awhile, but maybe I just missed your posts...I'm excited for you getting another bird. Adanna will probably not be too thrilled to share your affection, but hopefully with time she will adjust. I would go with another african bird, perhaps a grey, Timneh maybe? Or take a look at Senegals- they are nice birds and pretty quiet too, smaller than a grey but bigger than a cockatiel- I have a pair and they are quite adorable. Best of luck to you in your decision.
  22. Hello MargieB, welcome here. He looks like a wonderful little guy and it's too bad he started off on the wrong foot with his first new home. I hope you are able to give him the love he deserves. Tell us a little more about your 12 yr old CAG- what is his name?
  23. Glad you've joined us, you have a beautiful family! Be sure to give your new greys lots of individual attention, they may tend to develop a deeper bond with each other and decide that humans aren't as exciting to them. It's great that everyone is getting along so well.
  24. Hi Mitch, welcome to you and flock! Your Trigger looks like a very handsome fella and sounds like a character too. You just have to love those Timnehs don't you? My Lyric (Tag) just turned 2 at the end of August. Hope you like the forum.
  25. Welcome here, Joe! Your little one is just learning the ins and outs of flying and practice makes perfect. I understand you are worried about crashes. Make sure and take Bellsimo around and let him touch windows and mirrors and figure out they are solid. You may also want to close curtains and blinds when he is flying about. It will take patience on your part but the flying should improve and by allowing your baby to learn this you give them added self confidence which is good for a grey!
