1. Its never to late as long as your here now and trying to learn as much as possible as fast as possible thats the main thing. did you sanatize the used cage you bought before you put Zooloo into it. If a parrot lived in it before and died from some kind of illness it could get passed on to your bird and that would be a disaster. I bought a used cage also for Tyco if you rember I posted a pic in your last thread. I bought it from a bird rescue for 100. when I brought it home I starilized the whole cage with a steam cleaner It looked spotless when I got it and like brand new. and the lady at the rescue told me they had never used it because it was just to big to move from foster home to foster home. because it doesn't come apart but I wasn't taking any chances with my beautiful fid and starilized it anyway. I think its very important to do that with anything used that you get for your parrot.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/10/03 06:53
2. That the only way to learn Your going to do just fine with your baby. don't let any of those nasty people that would have him for lunch anywhere near him. Guard him with your life. I cant wait to see him grow up and looking beautiful and healthy. Poor baby had a rough start but they are hardy birds so he should be fine now that he's in your loving care. I'm so glad you found him when you did. or he might of ended up on someones dinner plate. I so happy he got such a caring momma that loves him. This is the best place you could have found for help with everybody here helping to ensure this baby lives. and your love and caring he's going to be the bestest friend you ever had. he will love you forever.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/10/03 06:36

4. I agree something has change somehow. mabie he's not feeling well or mabie his beak is sore from the fall the other night. Their beaks are very sensitive and if it was bleeding he may have an infection starting in it. I would take him in just for a quick look just in case. better safe than sorry.
5. I'm turning my spare bedroom into a bird room. I can't wait until its finished all that bird mess in one room is going to be wonderful. Its a nice big room lots of space to fly and swing and climb. My problem is how am I going to move Tyco without her totally going backwards. she's been in my bedroom ever since I've had her because thats where I spend most of my time due to my disability. I have to have my feet up for half my waking hours. two hour up 2 hours down sort of thing. and on the nights I work I spend pretty much all day with my feet up so that I can do the 6 hour shift on my feet. anyway enough about me. Do you have any sujestion on how to move her with out her freaking out. I was thinking mabie of taking her in there everyday and staying with her let her play and check things out. but don't move her cage for a couple weeks. and then after she totaly feels comfortable being in that room with me. then I would do another couple weeks without me there. and after that Id move her cage in there. the rest of my birds I'm not worried about they will be fine its just Tyco you know how Greys can be they are very sensitive to change if anyone has a better Idea please let me know Thanks
6. Well I went out the other night and bought some 100% frozen fruit bars yum yum I gave one to Tyco and one to Fergie well Fergie just love it gobbled it down in 5 minutes Tyco on the other hand you would think I was trying to give her poison. She was so scared of this red thing on a stick she ran down behind her cage. I told her It yum yum and took a couple bites. and the I said look Fergie likes it. She looked over a Fergie and she was busy eating away but no way she wasn't gonna touch that thing so I ate it. Mabie in a day or two I'll try again Or mabie I'll try putting a peice in her water dish she like fishing the Ice cubes out of her water mabie she will like it better that way Its so strange to see her afraid of anything she has been so confident about everything for a long time and now a popsicle makes her scared strange.
7. I haven't used red palm oil either I can't find it in british columbia anywhere they sell it in alberta but I don't have a credit card so I can't buy it on line I figure I can give my birds all the nutrition they need without it they look beautiful and healthy and if they weren't I'm sure they would show it some way either in their poop of their feather looking dull of something so I'm not going to worry about it as long as they are active and noisy and playful and their poop looks normal and their feather shine like the sun thats good enough for me
8. I rescued a Grey last year that was 4yrs old and I'm her 4th owner she did not trust humans at all. but I put her in a place where she could see and be with me all of the time I spoke to her I made sure she had lots of toys to play with and I gave her lots of good things to eat. It took 9 months of telling her to be brave and that i loved her before she would even let me touch her feathers and then it was a 2 second touch to the top of her head. It will be a year oct 9th that I brought her home I can now give her scritches on her neck face and head. she still trys to turn her head somtime to bite me but if she does that I stop petting and say don't bite mommy and turn my back and walk away. she hates to be ignored. she is getting better and better all the time even if she does happen to get a hold of a finger she doesn't bite hard enough to break the skin but it hurts I don't show thay to her though I just very quietly say let go and she does I say bad bird no bite and turn and walk away. Its all I know to do but it does work and I also find if I tell her to be brave that there is nothing to be afraid of she takes my word for it. she has grown into a very confident bird thats not afraid of very much. I've change her cage from the cockateil cage she had for the first four years of her life to a macaw cage. and she has learned about a thousand new words and phrases. but it has taken tons of love and patients let your bird decide when the time is right to try new thing he will let you know when he's ready Tyco did. Just be there for him and let him see you all the time open his cage in a small room and let him come out more on his own.
9. I do hope you get him back safe and sound. I think about things like this everyday of my life it scares me to think that this could happen to any of us In a matter of a second. none of us are perfect and we all make mistakes. then we kick ourselves forever on how stupid we were in the first place. I also get overly confidne that my birds love me so much that they would never fly out the door but I still try not to take any chances. I only have the patio door that I really have to woory about. and It has a screen door on it as wll as the slideing glass door I do keep that screen door closed at all times. my front door has two doors out the first and your in the mud room then another to go outside. I don't woorry about that to much. Every window in my hoouse that opens except the kitchen window has a screen. My birds are fully fighted and I can't take any chances. If they go outside they are out in a cage no other way. but I have nightmares about losing them day mares also. it only take one mistake. and we are all capable of making that mistake. I know you didn't mean to lose your beloved bird and I for one feel for you. you are in my prayers for a safe recovery good luck with your new bird I'm glad you rescued him from a bad situation. you should try to put another cage out in your back yard with food in it for max he may find his way home.
10. I have the same problem with Tyco. She has a habit of waking up around 5am hungry I don't get them up until 8am so what I do is at bedtime I take all the food out of her cage and leave nothing except her pellets and water and I hear her munching on pellets every morning at 5 am then she goes back to sleep until 8am least this way I know she's eating some of them along with the rest of her food
11. Hi Britney when are you getting your first Grey? Do you have any other birds? Tell us all about yourself and your new little one that your getting. Welcome to the forum
12. I think he's prububly a closet talker they usually start out that way. it will get better as he learns to talk more. then he will talk talk talk when your out of the room but I find that allot less annoying then the sound effects they make. Tyco talks in front of me now but she still talks allot more when I leave the room.
13. Isn't it the truth except for the money part they may not ask for money but I spend a large portion of my paycheck on the little boggers. I sure I spend more on my birds then I do on my daughter if I don't they sure are running very close. They definatly are not cheap to keep but they are worth every single bit of it.

Crackers

I'm sorry for your loss Iknow how heart breaking it can be to lose a good friend. But he has full flight and full sight and is waiting for you just accross the rainbow bridge. he will meet you there one day and he will show you what a good flyer he is. I know the sadness fills your heart and there is an empty spot in your home without him I'm sure even little sparky notices the difference and misses his little friend. In time the sadness will be replace with all the wonderful memory's that you and Cracker shared so take heart.
15. You would be suprized how easiely you wake up when you hear a baby cry inyour sleep. I have raised tons of different kinds of babys. When they need me I was awake in a instant. Just put him next to your bed and if he needs you you'll hear him.
16. My mom loved the song of the canary's also. When I was a little girl we always had 2 birds a Nudgie for us kids and a canary for mom. She would take that canary outside on warm days and sit on the prouch with it for hours listening toit sing. She said they are so relaxing and melodious. I always liked to play with the Budgies myself they where more fun
17. Isn't it funny how they all have different tastes Mine won't touch pork but the love chicken and homemade roast beef sliced thin they go absolutly crazy for Tyco won't eat nothing but if I let her Fergie too. my Ring neck isn't to bib on any kind of meat that I have tryed yet but i haven't tryed him on much except chicken because I have'nt been cookink big meals lately. There is only me and my youngest daughter at home now so most of the time I just make us something quick the only real cooking I do is for the birds like their rice and bean mash or thier sweet potatos, carrots and broccoli. stuff that I make for them i just do in the microwave really quick. they have to have all those things like squash and yams mine are fussy they will only eat thet stuff if I cook and mash it so thats what I do. they will only eat a few vegetables raw like corn and sometimes carrots the will eat carrot tops raw and romaine lettece the leafy stuff they are pretty good about eating its just the hard veggies they prefer them cooked and broccoli I can't get Tyco to eat it at all unless I chop it really fine and put it in her scrambled eggs with some red sweet peppers and a little cheese then she will eat it only because she loves her eggs. My birds are very spoiled but what the heck they are worth it. Yes Zooman Tyco is a very big Grey shes probubly one of the biggest I've ever seen and her feathers are very dark almost charcoal colour the tips of her primary flight feathers are almost black. I must say though she is beautiful and her feathers are so healthy looking. I'm very proud of my birds all of their feathers are so so shiny they are the picture of health. and they are very very active. I just wish that Raja's breader didn't butcher Raja's wings so bad that poor bird can't even fly 6 inches. he falls like a rock. He loves to climb on everything and he get on the ropes that hang from the ceiling and if he falls from up there he will kill himself. what a stupid thing todo to a bird. I can't wait til he goes through his first molt just so I don't have to worry so much about him falling.
18. It sounds like your doing a good job If he's getting more active I'm sorry If you told us but how old is your baby. just like human babys they love to put everything in their mouths. It took me a while to find a Avian vet also because it had to be a woman vet. My Amazon will not tolerate men at all she hates them so much. So to have a man vet was totaly out of the question. I found a wonderful Avian vet for them she's the best but I had to do allot of looking first. good luck with your baby I'm sure every thing will turn out great.
19. I wouldn't worry to much the older he gets the better flyer he will become he will be able to fly through a door that only open 4or5 inches. My Amazon turns sideway and flys through a small opening and keeps on going. I cannot beleive the flying skills that they develop its absoulutly increidible to watch the areodynamics. its like watching an airshow in your house. Your bird is just getting some excersize and the hissy fit is just showing how incredibly happy he is to be able to fly its just their way of showing joy.
20. I bought a small powder coat cage for my birds at petsmart for 60 dollars it has handles on the sides and a big door that opens up to a play stand type thing. its 18"x14"x20"high I can strap it into a seat bealt and it has two feeding staitions. its the perfect size for any small to medium size bird for travel Its made by top wing and it a nice solid cage great for all your travel needs and it has 5/8 bar spacing so its good for little birds also
21. Isn't that fummy how different they can be Tyco loves girls with blond hair and will do just about anything to get their attention and the colour pink is her favorite colour she loves anything pink if I bought her a blue toy and the exact same toy in pink she goes for the pink one everytime.
22. oh yeah I can relate. How your friend don;t call anymore because they can never hear you anyway with the noise the birds are making because they want to get you off the phone. Or your non bird friend are always wondering why you don't want to come out anymore because you don't want to leave your birds at home alone, and when you do go out all you can think about is getting back home to your birds.
23. I think thats a great Idea I'm going to blend up some juice with some fresh fruit and I have a popsicle maker thing I'll just use popsicle sticks rather than the plastic ones that come with it and make Tyco some healthy popsicles. or mabie I'll just buy some minis 100% fruit sticks at the super market The come in packs of 8 so Fergie can have one also. As a little once a month treat I think they would just love it.
24. I also know you are a great bird dad I sorry if I said anything to offend you. I'm glad your Alex is just about back to his old self again. My birds don't like their tails touched either I think its a pride thig with them their very protrctive of their awesome tails Its like their sayin thats private property don't touch:LOL
25. I would but I'm not that crazy about their adoption proceedures they want to be able to stop by unannouced 4 time over the next 2 years. I don't even like it when my kids stop by unanouced never mind someone whos their to decide wheather or not I'm taking good enough care of a bird I adopted. I mean really isn't it obvious that I'm not the kind of person that buys a bird and then neglects it. I love them way to much for that. And what if its the day before their big weekly clean and they decide That its cage is to dirty and take my beautiful baby away from me. I would just die. After all birds can be extreamly messy somtimes. I scrub all their cages once a week and change their papers every second day. to me thats enough. What if its not good enough for them. I almost forgot to tell you Raja said his first words today he said come on then Everyday when I let him out of his cage thats what I say to him I didn't even realize it until he said it to me. I opened his cage and as clear as can be he said come on then before I could say it to him I laughed so hard and told him how smart he was. gave him big cuddles and pets they really do have the sweetest litte voices.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/09/30 10:20
