my house is 1500 square ft with an open concept that gives my birds plenty of room to fly and the joy and confidence they have from being able to fly is a beautiful thing to see. I hate the it that Tyco never learned to fly. I hope that she can still learn how from my other birds. My Amazon is an amazing flyer. she could land on a dime. Its just so much fun to see them spread those wing and fly the length of my home with is a fair distance from the front to the back.

Thats great that your doing your home work their are plenty of parrots that need rescuing or rehomed it can be difficult to rescue parrots from a rescue orgamization depending on their adoption proceedures but if you don't mind putting a little money out there are lots of parrots in the classifieds that people don;t have time for. check it out. sometime you can even get them for free. just becareful of scams don't give any money before you get your bird. and don't buy any bird from another country like cameroon they are always scams

I'm so sorry I know exacatly how your feeling I lost a bird when I was a lot younger than I am now and I thought I'd never get over it. Your right it feels just like you lost a child. I know right now its very hard. It will get easier with time. remember that your Timnah needs you right now also as he will feel the loss too. please keep us posted on what the vet says about it. I would really like to know. I don't know what I would do if I lost any of my fids

Poor baby he looks like he could use a bit of TLC I just don't understand why people buy animals and then when they need to go to the Doctor they don't take them. I noticed you see it like I do. Its exactly like Child abuse. When your child breaks a an arm you go to the doctor and get it set and put in a cast so it can heal properly you don't just leave it and let it heal on its own because it may lose the use of that limb. A bird is meant to fly and when it breaks a wing and you don't do anything about it.you may be taking away its ability to be a bird that to me is the altamate in cruelty. I took my Cockateil to the vet for a broken toe two weeks ago. Of course the vet couldn't do much for him. I tought he might have broken his leg so I wanted to make sure everything was going to heal well. I'm so glad that you have this beautiful bird now. he finally has someone that will care enough to make sure he's in good health. Do you know how old he is and is he friendly or does he need to learn to trust again. Welcome to the forum also.

Have you tryed brazil nuts. Tycos not a huge lover of many kinds of nut she likes walnut & wet peanuts. But her altime favorite is a precracked brazil nut she loves them she throw allot of things on the floor but not a brazil nut even if she only eats half of it she will carefully put it back in her dish so she can save it for later something She doesn't do with very many things.

When I got Tyco she had barbered every flightfeather on her left hand wing. because of this she was extreamly of balance and would fall really hard on her Keel. I took her to the vet and had her clip the other wing to match so she would be balanced again it was very scary to have only one wing without flights. I'm happy to say she doesn't barber her wing anymore. She is fully flighted now. I don't think she was permited to fledge as a baby because she doesn't know how to fly. I find this very sad I can't beleive that someone would do this to a bird. Birds are meant to fly thats why God gave them wings. It makes me so mad that someone would actually clip a birds wings before it has learned to fly. takeing away something that makes a bird a bird

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/09/12 08:42

I always thought with budgies and Cockateils you had to take the bites to let them know that biteing isn't going to work I just got a new Cockateil for my Birthday a couple weeks ago. I got about 4 good blood draws from him during the first training session he was parent raised and had not been handled at all in 6or 7 months he's 10 months old so I just took the bite and kept talking sweet and singing and whisting to him and within about 10 to 15 minutes he was sitting on my hand and learning step ups. I just had him to the point where I could give him scritches and cuddle him and he fly off his cage one morning and put up the landing gear but was coming in to fast and broke his toe. Then I was afraid I would hurt him so I had to wait until his toe healed he is better now but he still has a bit of a limp. I don't know if we are going to have to start from scratch again or not. my fingers have just healed up from the first time ouch.

I cannot inagine someone selling their bird because they have finacial problems that woulds be like getting rid of your kids because their to expensive. I've always said kids and fids don't live on money they live on love and if you love them enough you will find a way to get them the things they need. Selling your bird because you need money is the coldest most heartless thing I have ever heard. what the hell is with people these days. makes me sick

I have lots of toys like that for Tyco she absolutly loves those kind of toys I do have to watch her though because she is a big Grey she weigh 585 gr and she can and does break them open with her beak. I prefer the wood ones with the walnut inside she like them just as much anything that makes noise when the shake it is ok with them heres a picture of the wood toy with the walnut its a much better choice than the acrilic ones

When I got my Grey she was 4 1/2 years old she could do quite a few sound effects that she heard outside the window. she was basicly kept in a backroom with a heavy blanket over her. she could only say a couple of things. Now she's absolutly amazing she can actually have a conversation with me. Ive had her for a year and she just like a little spounge soaking everything in. I'm so proud of her. I glad Your Grey has learned to talk I love it when they talk its so great to be able to comunicate with your bird. They can learn to tell you what their needs and wants are.

Me too please take him he sounds very sick. make sure you keep him warm in the meantime put a light over his cage and cover three sides to keep the warmth in he should be kept at about 80 degree when he's sick so that he doesn''t have to work at staying warm and can cocentrate on getting better but do make an appointment as soon as possible. Like Yesterday.

I say female no doubt in my mind the long neck and lower set wings is a female everytime. Tyco was known as a boy til I got her and had her tested. Tyco or Ty is a boys name but she has had that name and knows it really well so I didn't change it. I wouldn't know what to change it to anyway. There aren't many girls names that sound like Tyco. when I got Fergie her name was Jack I hate the name Jack every Jack I know is a Jack-ass so I changed her name to Fergie. What kind of name is Jack for a girl anyway

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/09/11 07:13

Tues my daughter taught Tyco a dance it goes like this. Its called Shake and bake play for keeps. what it is is my daughter waves her hand up and down saying shake and bake play for keep then Tyco opens her wings slightly, starts bobing her head up and down and struts back and forth saying shake and bake play for keeps. Well I guess my Cockateil has been watching Tyco do this. So yesterday Spike(Cockateil) was on top of his cage and all of a sudden he opened his wings slightly and started struting and bobing his head say shake and bake play for keeps over and over. I laughed so hard to see this little bird dancing and singing a song it was so cute. I wished I had my camera handy but of course I couldn't find it. Spike is a WFcockateil and ever since he was a baby he has thought of himself as an african Grey for a Teil he has a large vocabulary because he try's to say everything Tyco says. He's so cute and so smart. This is a picture of him anyway.

If a bird gets spooked they will poop right away to get rid of any access weight. Its a stress thing. If you notice those poops will also be more watery than normal its because it hasn't gome through the normal process.

Well thats good at least I know that I don't have a strange bird. Its just none of my other birds do this just Tyco. Mind you my smaller birds bathin a cassarole dish and Fergie my Amazon baths the same way Tyco does but she has never tried to bath in her bowl anyway. She just a shower kinda girl I guess doesn't like to bath.

Thats wonderful you better find somthing to make the time fly past or its going to seem like time stopped. I know how excited you must be I was the same way when I got my Baby Irn and my GCC I really think thats part of the fun. When your baby gets home your going to feel like a brand new mommy worried weather or not your doing everything right. I know when I brought Sprout home I toilet trained him right away. Because I was so worried about him mabie getting sick from any poop in his cage. I must have change his paper about 20 times in the first couple of day's and his water at least 5 time a day:laugh: I was a very over protective mom I made everyone wash all the way up to their elbows before they could even go near him. Silly eh:laugh:

My birds are right beside the front door and and The birds went through last winter without a problem. I do have a mud room which helps a bit I guess so basicly there are two doors before you get to outside. I love it because I can keep my birds flighted if they get through 1 door all thats going to happen is thatt they will find themselves in another room. The mud room is quite drafty and cold so when the inside door is opened the birds do get a slight draft for a second It doesn't bother them so I'm not going to let it bother me.

I always bath Tyco in the bathtub with a little water in the tub and then I hose her down with the shower massage on the mist setting. She really enjoys her baths and opens her wings so every inch of her can get soaked. Thats strange enough for a Grey but the strangest part is after her bath she will empty her water dish another 2 or 3 times bathing again in it. I don't understand it at all. the only thing I can think of is that she was having such a good time in the shower that she doesn't want it to end. Does anybody else have an opinion on this?
