Thanks everyone for your support its very hard to deal with. I real beleived I was doing the right thing by letting my birds have full flight. I thought teaching them about windows was enough but its not when there is fear involved. I really starting to wonder if I should clip them all now. I couldn't bear it of I lost another bird because of this idea that birds where meant to fly. all this is so fresh. and I don't want to do anything rash. I know your all going to say clipping the birds is a personal choice and it is but its never been my choice. I just don't know what todo. mabie a few more lessons on windows to keep it fresh in thier minds would help. like if I took them around every week and have them touch the glass I don't want to have to keep all the blinds closed and live in the dark. my birds are out from early morning until bed time. I just don't know what I should do

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/09/25 14:50

Yes those are baby toys clipped together and all I did was screw some eye hooks into the ends of the pvc and the put the baby rings through them it was so easy to make and my birds just love it. Tyco hangs upside down on it and flaps her wings like crazy. She can really get that swing swinging it so much fun to watch her. It takes a bit ti get the eye hook started into the Pvc so what I did was take a small nail and heat it up to red hot so that I could melt a small hole in the pvc It didn't have to be all the way through just enough to start the hook. The a little vet wrap or scisle rope and you've got yourself a swing. you can buy those baby rings package of 12 for a dollar at most dollar stores I even put some 2x2x3"blocks through some of the rings on the swing so if the birds felt like chewing while they where swinging they could. My birds name is pronounced Tieko It's a boys name her previous owner call her ty for short when I got her I had her dna'd and it turn out she was a she not a he but she knew her name so I didn't change it. and because I kinda liked her name also

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/09/25 09:45

I Opened all the bird cages like normal and Spike my cockateil went for his morning flight around the house like normal I heard him land so I went into the living room to see where he was. My Papplion dog came chareing after me and it spooked spike and he flew into the window and broke his neck. I raised that little guy from a little baby I hand fed him he was so smart he always thought he was an african grey and would try todo and say everything that Tyco would say he even learned the shake and bake play for keeps game that my daughter taught to Tyco now he's gone and I'm so upset I don't even know what I'm doing. I can't beleive it one mnute he's here and then gone in a instant. He knew about windows because I teach all my birds about them I take them around to every window and show them that they're solid, but I guess because he was startled and flying irradicly he wasn't thinking andjust flew out of fear. I'm so sad this is just the worst thing that could ever happen to my beautiful baby boy.

I agree totally Shanung I have bird that fly around my house from morning until night there are accidents but for the most part I watch their body language or if they are on me I can usually feel when they step back I then just say go home or go to you play stand and off they go we have a very good repore and they know when I say go here or there they go. I never have problems with putting them to bed or anything I just ask them to go into their house and they go. if you teach your bird and talk to it like you would a friend they learn they are very intelegent and do not need a boss just be a friend to your bird and they will do what you ask because they want to not because you tell them they have to.

I know what that excitment is like. don't worry your babies will be home before you know it. I love the names you have chosen. I can't wait to see some pictures the babies are just so sweet with those dark eyes that can met your heart. Your in for so much fun I can't wait to hear about all the antics your fids are up too

Amazons are not nippy I have a YCA and she has never ever bit me. she is the biggest cuddle muffin I own. Her body language is very easy to read and an Amazon will always warn before they bite if you see their tail open stay away they are not in the mood for pets. I can Touch fergie anwhere on her body but I know when she doesn't want it she will tell me and if I presist she will push my hand away with her beak. Amazons can bite mine doesn't but that come with training trust and love. Your Amazon is just a baby s/he needs to get out of that cage and start getting to know you and be played with allot she will become the sweetest bird with lots of handleing when s/he's young

What sad sad news to hear that this wonderful man has passed away. The way he could tame bird in a such a short period of time was nothing short of a gift from God. He could relate to birds so well I have used many of his techneques with my own birds and they work well but for what he could do in minutes takes me a week, to get the same results. and Ive only used them on budgies and cockateils I feel less intimadated by smaller birds. Mind you today I did try a few hing with Tyco and she responded very well Hopefuly his legecy will live on with the people that learned the techniquics he uses and teach them to others and that way he will always be with us My heart felt condolences go out to his family and flock I know in the bird world he will be missed deeply

I agree that bringing him home wlll give him the best chance of pulling through. He. Needs to be around people that he loves and that love him. My prayers and thought are here for you and spike please keep us updated on his progress. I hope and pray that he has enough fight in him to pull through all this with your care and love I'm sure it will give him the best chance possible

LOL thats about the size of slave to my birds. Its a good thing I love them so darn much and they give back plenty of love and pleasure. So I don't mind a bit.

I have an Amazon and a Grey both were rescues. My Amazon also screams but only for about 5 minutes in the morning or when I'm on tne phone, or if someone is yelling at someone else in an angry tone of voice. She is such a wonderful bird and Tyco my Cag has never copied her screaming. My Amazon is very cuddley and just oves affection un like my Grey She also is a very good talker and speaks in context allot of the time. She is way more sensitve about being left at home alone when I'm getting ready to go out she makes me feel very guilty about it. She will sit there and say no don't go its not fair over and over. I love her and my Grey very much they are very different in their personalitys but I wouldn't want them any other way. They are perfect just the way they are. Also because they are basicly the same size they have become friends with each other so when I do have to go out I knoow that at least they will have each other to talk too. I can't tell you what you should do but I just wanted to let you know that haveing an Amazon and a Grey can be very rewarding and you get to appreciate the differences in the 2 birds.

My Amazon doesn't pluck but she's going through the heaviest molt I have ever witnessed in this past week I bet she has lost about 30 feathers. Poor thing is just so miserable. She won't even allow me to touch her she is just sore and itchy all over. The only thing I can do to help is bath her every day until she soaked to the skin. Your bird may be starting to molt thats not really to many feathers at one time yet.

Yesterday I was eatin a honey graham cracker and of course I can't have anything with out giving some to Tyco and Fergie. So I said you want a cookie and gave then about a 1/4 of one each. Well today i was out in the Kitchen making myself a sandwich. When all of a sudden I hear a voice from the other room yum cookie want some there ya go. That was Tyco then I hear another one pipe up Fergie saying cookie over and over so I brought them in a little peice of blueberry muffin each. well that wasn't good enough for Tyco she dropped that looked at me and said yum cookie want some there ya go. so I went back out to the kitchen and brought her a little peice of graham cracker and handed it to her. She was fine then sat and ate her cookie with no more complaints. She certinly knows what she wants and learns very quick when its something she likes.

That looks very much like what I give my birds in their fresh food bowl whith variations on sesonal fruits. I also give them cooked stuff like sweet potato turnips my birds will only very rarely eat raw carrots but they love cooked carrots so I mash them up with their turnips and they gobble it up. they also get eggs done in a variaty of ways like french toast, scrambled, or omlettes full of fesh veggies and a little cheese for extra calcium. Your very right when you say that their diet shows in their feathers my birds all shine with areodecent colours, They are just the picture of health. Their yearly check ups always come back perfect. I think that its a lot less expensive in the long run to feed them well and keep them healthy then to have vet bills mounting up. Like my mom use to say an ounce of pervention is worth a pound of cure. Boy is she right when it comes to birds.

Its messy but as long as ou clean it up right away it not hard its after it dries that its a problem I also make sure that I put the dish with the ponagrante on their play top right in the middle so most of the mess stay in their cage area.

Your have done so well with them you should be very proud. I love the little pearl one. Thats the one I'd be keeping if they were mine but I do like the lutinos also. oh heck I just like them all. They are all beautiful

They are so beautiful I think I'd be a little leary of those beaks but not afraid. I tame down cockateils and budgies in a day usually cause I just take their bite and within a few minutes they realize that biting isn't going to make me go away so they stop. Those little bugger seem to know where it going to hurt the most and always bite in those places like the cuticule of your finger nail or thr skin inbetween your thumb and fingers. They just grab on and grind their little beaks in harder amd harder. I had bites from them that bleed forever it seems.

Sorry I never did answer your question on weather Raja my baby is talking yet. He's not but he's trying. He making sounds that sound like talking all the time. I guess he's practicing trying very hard to get it right. He's so funny He's always trying to make friends with the Cockateils he really wants to play with them but they either run from him or hiss at him, He fluff up his little head feathers at them as if to say cut it out let just play. He's starting to develop more of a personality now and its so cute. he loves to play peek a boo with a dish towel or anything for that matter he was chewing up a paper towel the other day and when I walked in he imediatly stuck his head underneath it so I would say peek a boo and then when I do he sticks his head out and then back under again. They learn so quick when they are having fun learning. I just love him so much they have the cutest little faces I've ever seen.

Yes I agree its extreamly hard on birds to be passed from home to home. I'm Tycos 4 owner in as many years. Even though I could not touch Tyco when I got her it didn't matter to me. I would not of cared if I could ever touch her.She need someone to love her unconditionaly and I decided that i would be that person from the moment we met. I think she decided that also because as soon as she saw me she was streaching her neck toward me and paceing back and forth. mabie she new some how that I would be her owner for ever. I don't know but we are now bonded and she allows me to give her scritches. and she steps up when i want her too. She wondeful i couldn't be happier. She is not going anywhere ever again except if she's with me of course. I'm glad you found a bird that your happy with thats great I also hope Bobby has found the perfect home for him as well.

I bought my birds a pomagrante for a treat the other day. They are Tyco very favorite thing to eat. But every time she eats a seed from them it causes her to shake her head which in turn get bright red pomagranre juice everywhere its like she can't help it the fruit makes her do this. I think its the soursweetness of them, Does it do this to anybody elses birds?

Please post some pics I'd love to see her. she sounds like a very nice bird. I just read your thread in the welcome room I love her name. Olivia is a wondeful name. I rescued a 5yr old last year from horrendous circumstances. Her name Is Tyco she was thought to be a boy for the first 4 years of her life. Then I had her Dna tested and he turned out to be a Girl. I didn't change her name because she knew it. So now I have a beautiful Female African Grey with a Bots name. She doesn't seem to mind so neither do I. Its very rewarding to bring an older bird into your life just to know that she will be loved an cared for after her previous parront couldn't do it anymore. There are so many birds out their that get passed from one home after another because someone buys them on a whim and knows nothing about how much care and attention it take to keep bird and then when they relize that it allot of work they rehome it again. I am Tycos 4th an last owner. Its taken awhile for her to trust again because of it. I'm sure when she first came to live with me she was just waiting to see where she would be going next. She knows now that she home to stay and she has become a very happy confident bird. Its taken lots of love and patients but she's very worth it. You are going to love being a Parront. Does she talk at all or said anything yet? Enjoy your new bird and please keep us updated. I can't wait to see some pictures of her. Is she a Timnah or a Congo? Tyco's a Congo.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/09/21 12:22

I raised 5 kids of my own and 6 or other people's mabie thats why I'm so good with rescued parrots. I have three rescues and they are all well adjusted naughty, sweet, loveing birds now. Tyco is my newest and she has come around wonderfully but what little brats they can be. If you don't have patients then you should never have a bird because they will try your patients everyday. Tyco has this new thing she does and I don't know how to stop her from it. She empty's her seed and pellet dishes she throws every bit of food out of them and I hate it. They charge a fortune for pellets and good seed mixes and for her to just throw it on to the dirty papers at the bottom of her cage just irks me. I spend at least $100. just on Seed mixes and pellets every 2 weeks. There is always a big waste with that stuff, but shes makeing it ten times worse. I think I'm just going to give her a tiny bit in her dish and if she empty's it she won't get anymore until supper time mabie that will stop her from wasting so much food

My birds are out from 9 am til 8 pm 7 day a week I have no problems with this as I only work three days a week from 5pm til 11pm so by the time I leave for work my daughter is home from school. at bed time my birs all go into their cages by themselves so all she has todo is close their doors and cover them up. smaller birds I usually put in their cages before I leave for work as they are younger and not as easy to put to bed. But both Tyco and Fergie are a bit older now Tyco is 5 yrs old and Fergie is 11 yrs old and all you have todo with them is say come on its bedtime in your house you go and both of them will climb own from where ever they are and get into their cages. They are very well trained that way. Hope fully in time all my birds wil be as cooprative as they are. Its all in the way you teach them. They have lots of out of cage time but they also spend time in their cages they go in and out when they want to. I noticed lately Fergie spends most of her time in her cage.Fergie is a Yellow crowned Amazon she is going through a extreamly heavy molt the worst I've ever seen in all the years I've had her so she is very uncomfortable and not very social right now I feel so bad for her it hurts to touch her so I just let her be poor baby. she loses about 10 feathers everyday she has so many pins all over her I can't wait til she done and gets back to her normal lovey self again I really miss the cuddles.
