He really is a beautiful bird so when are you going to adopt him He obviously only has eyes for you if He bites everyone else. He would make a wonderful addition to your flock

I've always had a bird ever since. I was a little girl. I have no Idea what they are attracted by but most bird even wild birds are not afraid of me. I go outside to fill up the bird feeders and the chickadees and house finches will perch on my hand waiting for their dishes to be filled if I pour a little into my palm they will eat out of my hand. The Steller jays will fly by and take the peanuts out of my hand on the fly they wait patiently for those peanuts daily. When I met Tyco for the first time she couldn't wait to get out of that little cage of hers and even though she had not been handled for 4 yrs and I was to be her fourth owner she stepped up and let me kiss and touch her beak. I also get called the bird lady. The people in my neighbourhood have budgies, lovebirds and cockateils and I don't know how many times I've been woken out of my sleep because a bird has either broke a leg. or is sick and they don't know what todo. because the birds are inexpensive they don't want to take them to the vet. So I end up taking the bird in and nurse it back to health then give it back. with a lesson on how to care for them. Even the people that do take their birds to the vet usually bring them to me if their on medication because they are to afraid to administer it. I just have a way with birds they seem to respond well to me. Or mabie its because they can sense that I love them. PS don't worry about germs when I feed the out door birds I have a smock that I keep in the mud room and I throw it on so I don't pick any disesses up and then when I come in I wash with anti bacterial soap.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/09/30 03:37

I have an Ice and filtered water despencer on my refrigerator. When I change Tyco's water I always put a little crushed Ice in it so it stays cod a little longer. Tyco love's to chomp on the Ice cubes. Does anybody elses Grey chew Ice? Do you think she would get brain freeze? Do you think its bad for her like mabie its to cold for her crop?

I was thinking the same thing there is a beautiful lutino female Irn at the rescue where I live. She is so gentle and sweet you can lay her on her back in your hand and she's happy as a clam. I thought I might get her.
-
The only problem is that she may like him more than you and decides she doesn't wantto hang out with you anymore. you would have to spend the same amount of time with her that you do now and pluss you would have a new one that would need an enormous amount of time. she would probubly be jelous of him at first so if you decided to spend time with them both at the same time don't put her near your face because she may have displaced aggretion if she can't bite him she may bite you. Its up to you they proububly would become freinds and in time she would get over her jelousy thing.

I think all birds would do just about anything for cheese. I feed mine like Judy or for my smaller conures somtimes I'll grate it so it looks like more than it actually is. my little brat GCC Sprout will steal Lunas FSC right away from her he will gobble his and then grab hers. Luna is such a gentle little thing and won't fight for anything she lets him have what he want and then takes whats left some times when it comes to treats I actually have to put Sprout in his cage just so Luna gets hers. There is a big difference in age between them Sprout will be 2yrs in Dec and Luna is 11 yrs so she getting older and Sprout is stil a little punk:laugh:

Thats a nice litte stand I have a little one like that that I use allot for training and moving around from room to room. I have three big ones also but the little one is handy for lots of stuff. Like teaching them tricks. or even basic training like step ups or recall.

Oh ya lots of pictures please.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/09/29 17:22

That baby is sooooo cute. You have a great job but there is no way I could do it I'd want to keep them all. The people that buy them would get the 3rd degree and would have to be perfect parronts or they would not be walking out of the store with any bird I raised. Or any bird for that matter.I'd probubly be fired the first day. I'd be talking people out of buying birds and telling them to buy a nice kitten or a gold fish something thats easy to take care of.LOL Karma to you for what you do.

Tyco is 5 yrs old and her Eyes are just starting to get yellow I thought most didn't get yellow Eyes until around that age -
LOL Dave your so funny. Thanks for the giggle first thing this morning. I don't think it really matters about the name as long as you and your grey like it thats the main thing
-
I feed mine zupreen fruity maintenence they are the only pellets my birds will eat and beleive me I've tried them all. I have at least 10 1/2 bags in my freezerLOL I feed my Conure's and Cockateil and Ringneck the cockateil size and the Grey and Amazon the medium size ones for Greys and Amazons. I've tried the small one for my big birds though it may save alittle money if I just had 1 bag to buy but they don't like the little ones.
-
I'm glad you figured things out he might have starved himself to death. A lot of birds are strange like that they won't eat if they don't like something. Even if their starving. You should get youself a digital scale and weigh your bird every morning before breakfast after his morning poop and keep track of it so you can average out his normal weight. That way if he's loses more then 10% of his average weight you know somthings wrong and can take him to the vet. Just a digital kitchen scale will work this is a picture of mine. just make sure it reads in grams or lbs so you can weigh him in Grams.

I bought Tyco's cage from abird rescue in my area Its a beautiful cage and I only paid 100. dollars fo it. You should check out the rescues in your area. they may just have what you need.this is a picture of the cage I got for Tyco

Thank you for your condolinces about Spike Its getting a bit easier now but for the first couple days I was crying all they time. I get so attached to these little guys they are just like my chilldren and to lose them is very hard. I worry about Raja all the time he was clipped when I got him and his breeder obviosly didn't know what she was doing because he falls like a rock. he loves to climb and play like all birds and he climbs the ropes that I have that are knotted and hung from the ceiling. when he does that I'm always afraid he going to fall because he can't fly at all. If he ever did fall i'm sure he would break something if it didn't kill him. I can't wait till he gets his flight feathers back. All birds are grumpy during molting time but that doesn't mean that you stop handleing them Fergie my Amazon is going through the worst molt I've seen in the 7 years I've had her. she won't let me touch her very much but I still step her up and spend time with her just us two. just because their molting you don't just let them be and not spend time with them. I think its important for all birds to have one and one attention all bird will go wild and phobic if its not handled on a daily basis.
-
Ya I have raja that needs allot of attention right now. He gets aleast 2or3 hours of my time on a daily basis that alot more than my other birds get they get talked to all day long but actual one on one is probubly about an hour a day with each. Raja is extreamly sweet though I must say he loves to be pet from the top of his head right down to the end of his tail. he will just snuggle under my chin and lay there for hours making baby noises while I pet him. I wouldn't want him to go wild because I had another bird that requires the same kind of attention. I think I'll just get another cockateil a friend of mine offered me a wf lutino cockateil for half price mabie I'll get her instead.
-
With My birds I find that most children when they come over are just curious I try to satisfy the couriousity right away by picking up one of my birds and allowing the children to pet them.My conures and cockatiels love kids so alot of the time they will sit on a childs hand this usually does the trick the kids get bored of the birds and move on to something else. Grown ups on the other hand i seem no matter what you say to them they don't get it. I don't know how many times I told men that come to my house to stay away from Fergie she hates men all men and she will bite. she won't bite woman but she has had a bad experiance with a man and she hates them and I don't know how many men I've heard say to me she won't bite me like there somthing different about them and sure enough they get a real good bite everytime. I just laugh I warn they don't listen they deserve what they get.
-
I'm glad tto hear that you got over her little hissy fit when she bit your cheek. sounds like she is sorry and she's letting you know how good she can be. Raja likes to flap his wings when he's on my shoulder on hot days its kind of nice I have a little personal fan to keep me cool:laugh: I was looking through the want ads because I lost my little cockateil the other day and I noticed there is a 2 yr old female alex in there. apperently very friendly and gentle. they want 2 hundred dollars for her. I have to think about it but mabie I'll get her. do you think thats a good deal or not
-
Well I just don't have the heart to clip my birds. so I'm going to try the window things I found some really nice stain glass and crystl things hanging from sucktion cups. I'll hang those on the patio door and a couple of the bigger windows. With the smaller windows I'll close the blinds and and have the blinds turned so you can still see out of them. I hope it will be enough I'm only really worried about the smaller birds. Fergie knows really well about windows she flys to her outside cage all the time which is right in front of the patio doors so I can just wheel it out the door when i put her in it. Tyco hasn't learned to fly yet so I know she won't be flying into any windows my baby Ringneck was clipped when I bought him and severly I might add which I'm not happy about he falls like a rock poor thing. So the only ones I'm really worried about is my Conures They don't scare easily they are much to interested in fun for that if they hear a big noise they are more likely to investigate the noise then fly away from it they are to curious for their own good. My other cockateil is also clipped a little because I just got him so for training puposes i always give m new birds a minor clip he still flys pretty good but its more a 10ft glide to the floor. He sould be starting his 1 yr molt soon so i'll have to make sure he gets tons of training about windows before then. A breeder friend of mine has offered me a Wf Lutino Cockateil for 1/2 price she's beautiful but I don't know if I should take it or not I've always wanted a all white Cockateil mabie I should I have a cage all set up and everything I don't know. what do you think I should do.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/09/26 19:50

Thanks so much you people are just the best to have around when your feelimg down. I was thinking of mabie just giving the birds a very minor clip like 1or2 flight feathers mabie that way they wouldn't be able to build up as much speed and if they can't fly as fast then they wouldn't hit as hard. What do you think about that idea. I really don't want to take my birds ability to fly totaly away from them I see the joy they have flying from one end of my house to the other to take that away just seems so cruel to me since they have always been flighted. This is has only happen to me once before in my life and the last time it was also a Cockateil. the last time was 30 years ago and my cockateils cage was never shut he slep on a perch just above his cage and one night we had a friend spending the weekend and he came home late and startled my bird in the dark he flew and hit a wall. From then on I've always put my birds in their cages at night. Now this with Spike gosh mabie it is just a Cockateil thing I'm realy starting to wonder.
