I haven't been keeping up much on the forum lately with a new bird that needs a lot of attention and my other birds and it seems like I'm always working whitch I'm not but because I've swithed days at wor to Wed, fri,and sat it seem like a long time before I have a few days off thank goodness tomorrow is sunday I have three and 1/2 days off I don't have to be at work until 5pm on wedensday I'll finelly can relax a little and mabie catch up with everything I hate working but I guess we all have to do it. Its so funny because there was a time that I couldn't get enough of it when I was younger and suporting 4 kids pretty much by myself even though I had a husband he was pretty much useless when it came to being the bread winner. now I just want to retire and never work again but I can't It would be nice though to be my age which is 50 and be retired don't you think.

Its okay to have two birds friendly with one another as long as they are in separate cages and you don't put up a nest box. My two conures are the best of friend and would probubly breed if given the oportunity but they are in separate cages. they spen all day feeding each other and preening each other both are my pets and both are very friendly and cuddly with me as well. as long as you keep them in different cages you shouldn't have any problems breeding wise anyway.

Happy halloween you 2 are you getting dressed up or what. I have to work which is a drag I just love seeing all the little one dressed up. I don't get to scare up any trouble tonight oh well have fun and think about me while I'm out there working my butt off:laugh: How the birds every body's happy and healthy I take it. Do your birds get afraid when the hear fireworks. Mine seem to be ok with it. My dogs on the other hand are just terrified of the noise. I feel so bad for them I think they would just love to crawl into a hole and stay there when the fireworks are going off. Well I can't talk much longer I have to start getting ready for work. Talk to you all tomorrow.

These are the pics of Gizmo that where sent to me before I got him. These are the picture's I took of him this morning after he's been with me for 3 1/2 days I am so suprized at how much better he looks in such a short time. He started playing with his toys this morning and he was dancing with me I wish I had a vidio camera because it was so cute. Hes going to come around really quickly we have made so much progress in just 3 days.

It sounds like your doing well with George so far Like Dave said Patients is the key. Try eating lunch with him Open the door and turn your back and eat a good health lunch that he might enjoy and make a fuss about it but don't offer him any eventully if you do this o a daily basis he may get curious enough to come out and help you eat your lunch when he does then you can share with him I got Tyco my Grey rescue to eat all kinds of good healthy veggies this way it took awhile and I thought I was goig to turn into a rabbit but it did help him with our bond and it got her eating a few more fruits and veggies.

Tyco does very strange things like that when shes playing with her toys. she love foot toys and she will pick them up and look at them from every angle she can get her head into. its the strangest funniest thing I've ever seen.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/10/31 12:14

Well Me and you have already talked about this and Like I said I can just about say without a doubt that you wo't be dissapointed I could go on and on about how wonderful Gizmo is annd I've only had him 3 days. It sounds to me like this guy really wants you to be his mom so what are you waiting for. Go get him and bring him home he's not getting any younger and the longer he's left in a cage the more cage bound he will become. Like Judy said this bird deserve a home and love just as much as anybody ad he has chosen you so I don't see as you have any choise in the matter he's made that dession for you.

This little sweety of mine is going to be easy he wants to be a pet really badley he just doesn't want to give it up to easy and then be dissapointed. I say this because he got my finger today when I gave him a almond but didn't bite just held it for a second then tonight when I was putting him to bed he put his beak through the bars so I could give him a kiss good night I asked him if he wanted me to give him a little scritch and if he did to put his head down I know he really wanted me to but was not quite ready he did raise all the feathers on his neck and head and got really close to the bars but just wouldn't drop his head yet so I gave him a beaky rub instead and of course when he allows me to touch him in any way he gets a ton of praise. He's had three baths now the first day just a minor little misting. the second day a little bit more than the first and today a all out soaking you would not know that it was the same bird that was in those pictures he looks beautiful tomorrow I will post some before and after pics its just incredible what a good bath will do. I don't think he was preening before but he sure is now he got those feather looking great. He won't eat any of his veggies at all he does eat his nuts and grapes and a few pellets and of course his seed mix I haven't really noticed weather or not he's eating the dried fruits and veggies that are mix in with his seed mix or not. I'll check that out before I give him a fresh bowl. I was singing Jeepers creepers where'd you get those peepers to him today and when I walked past him later he was singing jeepers creepers over and over it was very cute. he has this little tiny sweet voice that you can't help but fall in love with. I'm just haveing such a good time learning what this guy is like and so far he is just wonderful. he came out of his cage this mornig again but when he does he only stays out for mabie 5 minutes and then goes back inside. So far he hasn't touch any of the toys in his cage I don't know if its because he doesn't know what they are or if he just to busy taking in everything around him still. He likes to look out the window and watch everything that happening out there mabie I should close the blinds just to see if he will play with his toys. I know he knows what play means because when I say to him you want to play? he gets really excited. anyway thats todays update. I made a appointment with the Vet for next Tuesday but I must say he does seem to be in pretty good shape health wise his poops are healthy his feathers look healthy and shiny now and he's active and vocalizing so I'm not to worried about rushing him in there right away. Besides he did go to the vet a week ago before my friend took him over to her house she had him checked out because she's a breeder and she didn't want to take any chances with her birds. Her vet said that he look pretty healthy that he just needed some TLC he didn't do blood work but he did a stain and looked at his poop under the microscope and he was fine. I do want to get some blood work done before I intoduce him to any of my birds though I'm vey much into better safe than sorry when it comes to my birds. If you can get a bird to stop plucking. the feathe should all be back within a month or two because they been plucked completely out they don't take long to grow when they mold you'll notice that within a day or two they already have pins and feathers starting to grow well it the same when they pluck them they will grow a new feather right away if you can break the cycle you can have a fully feathered bird in no time.

I know just how you feel about all these poor birds that eed your help. You do have to keep yourself in check though ad remember you can't help them all. You have to choose wisely so you don't get in over your head. you also have to not have more than one or two rescues at a time because they do demand allot of attentio at first. I'm sure you already know this. If you think that Baxter has come into his own and you are ready for another at this time then go for it. If not don't worry there is always another bird out ther to save I can garentee it. I'm not tryig to discourage you at all I think its wonderful that you have a heart for the rescues but if you get to may at one time you won't have enough time to help them. So pick and choose carefully. I love Elkes I would take one even if they did pluck these are just bad behavours and they can be change into somthing more positive with love and a good uderstanding on why they are plucking in the first place there are so many causes you may have to go through a few to find the cause and fix it. If its just stress thats a easy one so is a medical problem. other reasons can be harder to figure out. Please if you get this bird try not to use drug therapy to fix it. If the birds depressed try to make it happy do't use anti deppresants so many vets offer this I would not use them but thats just my opinion. The down side of trying to help a plucker is that you may never be able to get her to stop. But a featherles bird is still in need of all your love and they are beautiful on the inside if not on the outside. Just remeber beauty is only skin deep. If she has been a plucker for a very long time she may have damaged herself and may not be able to grow feathers anymoore. The worst Possible could be that she has beak and feather disese and if thats the case You dob't ever want to bring her around the rest of your flock please be careful make sure you know what your getting into ask lots of questions.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/10/30 19:37

Baxters mom has given you some good advice but one thing you must not do is put your parrots anywhere near each other until you take Ice to the vet and get blood work done and a gram stain when and if the work come back fine then you can let your birds meet each other but please quarentine your bird til this is done. I would also put him into his own cage as soon as you get him home it will help him to feel comfortable. Open the door and let him come out if he wishes but don't push it. he will come out when he's ready. For the first little while at least try to not look at your bird straight on Look at him with one Eye of put your head down. and when you approch his cage come in from an angle or zig zag these behavours from you will tell your new bird that you are friendly. Offer him tons of treats at this time so he also learns that good thing come from you. talk to him dance sing read what ever he will soon come around when you read to him sit with your back to him with the door open he may get curious enough to come over and check out what this book that has your interest is all about the same goes when you eat eat with him watching you he may want to try some and come over to see whats so good on that plate if you want to do anything with him like give him a scritch tell him first what you want to do and allow him to make the desion on weather he want to allow it or not. don;t stop asking though eventually he will do as you ask. The main thing is have fun with him always be happy around him he will come around I've done this with a few birds and some take longer than others to respond but they all do eventually patients patients pateints is the key. If you can get him away from his cage to another room preferbly some place small like ths bathroom you can practice step ups but wait until he has settled in first and gains a bit of trust. as far as diet give him everything healthy he might eat it but don't stop eventually he will get curious enough to try it you can eat the fruits and veggies in front of him and get excited about them it may help him to try them faster

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/10/30 18:23

I know that taking a couple bites will work but Like I said I'm allergic to pain. I put my head down and let him preen my hair and he was very gentle when he did that so I decided I would put my fist up against the bars and see what he would and I invited him to taste me if he wanted too and low and behold he came over and very gently tasted my fist he actually was licking it for 5or6 seconds I think he likes me.

I gave Gizmo a lite misting yesterday he wasn't soaked the water just sorted beaded up on his feathers it did help allot I must say his feathers look 100% better then they did so I gave him another lite misting this morning. he seems to realy enjoy any interaction I give him he get really close and listen intently when I talk or sing to him. I asked him for a kiss this morning and he stuck his beak through the bars so I kissed the top of his beak he still want to bite though so I'm very careful how I do anything with him. he came out of his cage for about 10 minutes this morning and checked out the basket of toys he doesn't seem to know what to do with toys he hasn't touch any of them and if I try to play with him with a toy he make a very cute noise but I think it a noise saying I'm scared it the same noise he made when I tried to cover his cage. I think he will come around quite quickly but I don't know how I'm going to get him to stop biteing except to take a couple and I don't want to He has a very big beak. I allergic to pain:laugh: we will see mabie I can talk him out of wanting to bite by when he trys just walk away. He doesn't like that he actually screamed come back when I was walking away today.

You have snow already yuk yuk I live in BC and we get snow for about 3 weeks every year I hate snow. Its pretty to look at if you don't have to shovel it or go out in it. We have had beautiful weather here. the leaves are all changing and its sunshining and warm really a beautiful time of year. I don't have problems with poop my birds are pretty good about poopin on comand so I just put them on a peice of newspaper and say go poop and they go. I love to watch them fly also. the are pretty good about leaving my furnature alone but they like to chew the natural wood trim around my windows. GRRRR Oh well It can be replace when they finally stop chewing it I'll replace it.

I'm glad to here all is ok I know how scary it can be when they stop making their usual noises and aren't playing with their toys when they usualy do. I had a scare with Tyco today as well she was on her boing that hangs from the ceiling and she loves to undo things well she was at the top of the boing and decided to unscrew the hook that holds the boing well it fell she fell and all I heard was a very loud crash I was in the kitchen at the time. I;m telling you I ran and Tyco was a little stunned for a few moments but I didn't want to race over and pick her up because lots of birds get phobic if their not expecting it and they are in shock anyway so I had to wait until she shook herself off and turned to me and then I picked her up but boy was that scary Tyco was quiet for about an hour after that and that made me even more worried. but she is fine thank goodness and so is Gryphon we have pretty tough birds don't we:laugh:

They don't really chew on their cages but they do use their beaks to help them climb their cages should be powder coated paint and baked on its up to you but I would not use a cage that had to be painted for my bird I was always be afraid that some how my birds would ingest some and poison themselves

The biggent problem is that from being in that cat carrier for 10 hours yesterday he has poop all over his tail from haveing no perch soI guess his tail got draged through his poop all day. so now I hate to leave him with all that feces on him I want to wash it off. I just hate it when thing are not clean especialy when it comes to my birds. I also notice that he has been plucking his wings a bit which is another reason I'd like to get him started on regular bathing it helps encourage proper preening habits. He's definatly going to need quite a bit of work over the next little while. I did spray his tail with a very fine mist he didn't seen very happy but he didn't freak out either mabie I'll just try a little more everyday until he gets used to it. Poor guy least he''s eating I made him a scrambled egg and he ate those and ate a peice of apple and 3 grapes and his nuts and seeds the carrots broccoli tomato and romaine lettace he didn't touch. oh well I'll keep trying. he did take 2 little peices of his pellets also so if I can get him to keep eating them I'll be happy. I wonder if I should give him a vitamin supplament just for the first week or so just to give him a boust he seems active enough he's always hanging by 1 toe from the ceiling of his cage. he also won't come out yet His door has been open all but he has chosen not to come out. anyway thats what I've observed with him so far. Sorry baxters mom he's here to stay he got me by the heartstrings he got the sweetest voice I've ever heard and he says everthing I say to him its so cute.
