1. BMustee Thanks for the vet bit, i forgot to mention that , Yes a trip to the local avian vet would be advisable to check out the wing damage.
2. Hi Sara & welcome to the forum, look forward to hearing more from you
3. Hi Again, I would say the damage is possibly down to the separation from you on your trips. There is always a reason behind the plucking & it can be so frustrating for owners because you have to find out what is causing it, before you can start to fix the problem. The list is endless but a few possibilities are; Frustration from long periods in his cage Lack of mental & physical stimulation Change of family circumstances/ environment Incorrect periods of light/darkness A poor diet, high in fatty foods Attention seeking From the above i would suggest frustration from being caged, lack of company & perhaps trying to draw someones attention. His wings were obviously damaged by flapping/panicking in his cage. Ideally if you can is there perhaps a family member who could parrot sit for you in your home ? Totoro would at least then be in familiar surroudings. It is not an ideal scenario leaving him with a radio, timer etc.. He needs human contact. He sounds as if he needs to regain your trust, just be patient & work with him slowly towards regaining the relationship you had.

6. Congratulations Talonsis Well done to all who entered.
7. Beccy thanks for the information i have also checked all possible links i have & have spoke to my breeder who also is a bird rescuer. parrots are rather partial to chillies but - luckily for them - are immune to the power of capsaicin, the chemical ingredient which produces the heat. Many foods manufacturers include dried chillies in their food mix. There is no evidence available anywhere to suggest chillies cause asthma. My breeders has been feeding chillies for over 20 years & has never come across this. I feed chillies to my three greys who all love them. I would say carry on feeding them & not to be alarmed by this topic, until the day we have concrete evidence from veterinary/ nutritional sources that backs up this theory.
8. Is he pulling/plucking feathers out ? Is there any bald patches ? My two boys are 10 months & going through their first molt & are very scruffy at the moment with excess downy feathers everywhere. Any chance of a picture ?

10. Hi flint, We have a welcome room, why not come & introduce yourself. Flint There is always a reason behind the plucking & it can be so frustrating for owners because you have to find out what is causing it, before you can start to fix the problem.Has there been anything that has changed in your greys life recently which may have started him to pluck ?The list is endless but a few possibilities are; Frustration from long periods in his cage Lack of mental & physical stimulation Change of family circumstances/ environment Incorrect periods of light/darkness A poor diet, high in fatty foods Attention seeking. Have you taken him to an avian vet to rule out any medical reasons ? Many members recommend misting with aloe vera juice. If you type " plucking " in the search box at the top of the page you will be able to have a read through previous topics on plucking.

Post edited by: lovemyGreys, at: 2007/10/29 20:56

15. In general it is usually around the 16/20 weeks. As Tari says tho it does depend on the individual bird.10- 11 weeks does sound a little young tho for a fully weaned grey. Are you having to handfeed ?

18. Siobhan i agree with Dan, it may be more cost effective to buy a purpose built double cage as opposed to messing around with this one.Shame you was nearer to me i would have been intrested in your cage As for the pans most of the big store should sell stainless steel or cast iron, do you have something like Debenhams or a cookstore ?
