I would love to at least leave them with the parents till at least 4 weeks to 5 weeks of age but that just not possible. Maybe when we split them up next year we might be able to let them stay with the parents a while if they even breed. The green I have was the only one to live out of four the green pair laid. For some reason the female left the next just as Jade hatched and the others got chilled and died. We got to Jade just in time. I agree with you 100 percent with what you are saying. It is also believed that parent raised check make better breeders. Which may very well be whats wrong with my blue they were both hand fed babies.
  2. Unable to have children. Had a liver transplant 14 years ago and went on an expermental drug and we decide to many things could hurt out baby because of this before it was even born so thought it best for out baby not to have her/him. Im ok with this now. It was hard when I was younger. But I sort of had this need to nest so...... Hehe
  3. Well ok I didn't add my birds. I have a red lored amazon, two budgies, a green quaker, a blue quaker, and my TAG as well as a pair of breeder blue quakers. My dream is to have a pair of breeder TAG's.
  4. Ill go first. I have been told I have a small zoo. I have 8 dogs four that are Chihuahua's I use to show and breed them. I have two cats, 1 75g tank with 4 goldfish, 1 30g with tons of guppies, 1 6g with a Betta, and four 1g tanks with Betta's. I also have one snake, 3 lizards and two guinea pigs. I have in the past owned rabbits, mice, rats and dwarf hamsters. And one time I had a pair of tiny tiny micro squirrels. Don't remember what they really were but they did look like a tiny squirrels.
  5. Well Topaz did not try to thow up at all this last feeding. Jade did but not much. So far so good.
  6. Ok do you all have chickens? or is this just something they do?
  7. Hey how about a quaker? are they legal in your state? They can learn just as many words and in a couple years you'll be armed with enough experence to get yourself a grey and then you quaker can teach it words. lol A Vasa is a nice bird but kind of hard to find. I have yet to see one in person.
  8. Ya I thought it was cute need to start collecting some new ones though you all might get bored if I use the same ones over and over.
  9. lol The blue one is going to live with me. Thats my dream bird, a blue quaker, have wanted on for over 12 years. The green is up for grabs you all can fight over that one. lol He/she is much cheeper too. Oh but I do have a three week old blue quaker and 6 more possible eggs in the incubator at my breeder friends house. So you all are going to be sick or quaker pictures.
  10. lol oh ya when I was still grooming dogs mine use to say "stop it" but has lost that over the years. Have not been a dog groomer in five years so she don't hear it so much.
  11. Unfortantly when birds get sick they are really sick cause they dont show it till they are very bad off. But with luck and good medication they should be fine.
  12. Mine is 8 years old and a closet talker. But she says Pretty Bird, Pretty Puppy, Look at you, What you doing?, No, Hello, Bobby, Come here and a few other things I can figure out. She also barks, meows, cries, beeps like the phone and the microwave beep. Makes quaker sounds and amazon sounds to try and get them into trouble. Bobby and Come here are her newest words.
  13. The quakers have been a little under the weather the last couple days and I had them on medication. This morning Topaz threw up 30 percent of her food. So off to the vet we went. I took the green one too he has the same systems and if he needed a shot Jade needed to be with me. The vet said I was doing the right thing but wanted me to try a stronger drug and separate them so they can't re infect each other. And they both got a shot. This sort of thing is not that uncommon all birds carry some yeast germs but normally they develop a tolerance for it from their parrots. But both these babies were hand raised from day one. So they did not get any good germs from Mom and Dad to help them out. I'm also back on feeding every two hours and feeding less so they can hold it down better. So far this has worked. Also they are both in their very own brooders set at 85* to help them feel better faster. Here is the picture I promised from yesterday. This is from last night.
  14. There are baby foods with no additives. Cost more but they are out there. I buy them when I'm weaning out babies. BTW any luck Dee?
  15. Don't think I could do that. I would be terrified they would take him from me at the end of 6 months and it would break my heart. I wish you luck. Your very brave.
  16. Looks like people watching.

I'm trying very hard not to cuss these days. Didn't realize how much I do that especially considering how much I hate that trait in my husband.
  18. Did that already. Funny it was easy for me to read but this red is not. But thats ok as long as you all can read it.

Oh goodness not tring to get you to buy them was just sharing. hehe You all are silly.
  20. 1) Is a Grey appropriate to our circumstances? http://members.aol.com/rhondastoys/page4.html cut and paste that should help you decide that part. (2) My wife has fairly bad seasonal allergies but no problems with mammals (except me occasionally )... What's the best way to find out if she is allergic to a Grey's feather dust? you can bet she well be allergic so you might want to consider an eclectus they have no feather dust. I am allergic to mine I mist my birds daily. I have no carpet in my bird area. I was the currants a lot. If you have carpet you well need to vacume a lot. Need to anyway for messy food. I mist the paper down in the cage before I change and I have an air filter that helps a lot. (3) Is there a *large* risk that, no matter how we train and socialize the bird, it will end up bonding to one of us to the *total* exclusion of the other? Yes this is possible with any bird you get. (4) If the best we can hope for is tight bonding to one person and mere civility with the other, is there a way to control or guide who gets the bond (i.e. stick to one gender, have one person take the lead in training, etc)? Not really. In most cases the bird well bond with whoever it spends the most time with but sometimes a bird well choice a human that it only sees one time. (5) Are we going to run into big bird-related problems when our first (human) baby comes? You could. But this could happen with a small bird out there and if your dedicated to your bird you well work it out. (6) Are Greys more at risk than other parrots of psychological stress and trauma from being housed with a vet or other professional sitter during vacations abroad? (For domestic trips, we can drive instead of flying) They can be but once again there are ways to condition your bird when young if you are wiling to do what is need. IE an over nighter at the sitters even when your not on vacation to keep him use to the situation. (7) For the cage, is the best approach to get a small 20x20 baby cage for the first year, then a larger 36x24 (or bigger) adult cage and make the baby cage a sleeping/travel cage? The bigger the better. (8) Do you think that, based on everything, a Macaw is more appropriate for us than a Grey, or vice-versa? (9) Other than size, occasional bouts of loud noise, and lesser speaking ability, is there something I'm missing that argues against a Greenwing and favors a Grey for people like us? Loud noise is more a daily thing not an occasional thing. With any bird and yes Greenwings are very very loud. But a grey can be to some people too. (10) Is it true that Greys tend to "switch allegiance" from one person (parent-bond) to a different person (mate-bond) around sexual maturity? Any bird can do that. (11) Is there a reason to favor male over female, or female over male (and is it even safe and quick enough to get a baby DNA'd in time)? Not that I know of. (12) In babies, what are the most important things to look for? A bird that is healthy and likes you.<br><br>Post edited by: Tari, at: 2007/07/06 23:56

Lol you cant go wrong with a quaker. They can talk as much as a grey. Not as much in content and they dont sound like you but they can talk up a storm. But they can be protective of their cage. And some people think they are loud. I love them to pieces. lol That why I have two.
  23. I so love winter time. My fave. Thanks for the pictures.
