  1. Well here we are with the latest update. Nilah has not been allowed out of her cage in the mornings (m-f) before I go to work. Rikki and Talon are out and we eat breakfast together as always, I give Nilah her breakfast in her cage, talk to her a lot while I'm in the kitchen, she can't see me, but she talks back. This has been the routine since Sept. 23.......it hasn't gotten any easier for me, I Feel terrible not lettin her out while the others are stepping up to my hand and going with me to the kitchen. It breaks my heart and not a day goes by when I don't feel sad for her. She seems to be ok, but I'm not. Her personality DEFINATELY changed. She became quieter, more well behaved, but very clingy, she never leaves my side, always on my hand or shoulder. This was hard for me... So starting this past week on Monday , I let her out in the morning with the others much to her surprise, she had breakfast with us, helped me get ready for work, and was again part of our family flock. When it was time for me to leave for work after about a hour or so, while she was on my shoulder, I walked over to her cage and leaned in, it's big enough I can get Inside and she willingly stepped onto her perch. I made a huge big deal bout what a good girl she was and applauded, she loves applause! We had successful 5 days of this! I m so happy! I hope writing this doesn't jinx it. The one thing that has changed in my house over the last 2 months, was my daughter broke up with her boyfriend, the boyfriend which Nilah was obsessed over and she became mean to us when he was around. I think him being gone has calmed her back down again. I hope and pray she continues to go back in her cage in the mornings. It has been more difficult for me than her I spent my days at work feeling so bad for her.
  2. Aww, sweet Cricket! Nilah doesn't start until spring and it lasts thru the summer. I find Nilah to bot e anymore difficult than normal during this time, as long as she is allowed to meet her needs on me every day after work while I sit on the couch before i get up to cook dinner....
  3. I use infrared heaters, but never leave them on when I'm not home or at night. My furnace goes down to 64 at night, but I would rather my birds be a bit chilly than worry about a fire. The top half of their cages are covered by a sheet.
  4. My talon loves snow! I bring her a dish every time it snows and she really enjoys it, my other birds..no way, too cold for them!
  5. I agree, a must for everyone thinking about a bird!
  6. Happy Bird day Louie! I hope your mama spoils you rotten today, but I kind of think she does every day! You have made her very proud, keep up the good work and enjoy your day! Nilah sends her love.....boy I would love it if you two could meet, I have a feeling Niliah would instantly fall in love....
  7. I have many hanging type gyms around my hOuse. I don't put anything on the floor as I have dogs and cats running around and they would never stay in place. I just make it a nightly chore to go thru my house and clean up all the bird potty that may have fallen around the house, then I start the next day out fresh and clean!
  8. Beautiful memory, with many more to come!
  9. I am not a believer in only getting a parrot who "picks you" . I don't believe they can possibly know right from the start if they like you or not. Us humans are much more complicated as we find, when we first meet another human, and think we like them, or are in love with them, only to find out as time goes on that it wasn't the best choice and we move onto other relationships. I think it is far more complicated when it comes to a parrot for many reasons, first off, we don't speak their language, that takes years of interactions with them and we never really do understand them completely nor do they understand us. We struggle with our interactions with each other and do the best we can on both sides. Yes, we love and adore them and I believe they Love and adore us as well over time. They WANT to Bond with us, want to be a flock member. I feel ANY parrot will do their very best to fit into our lives and bond with us as long as we show them the love, care and respect they so deserve. I say this because out of my 6 birds, we never went to see them and 'see' if they picked us, they aren't capable of that in my opinion in just a visit or two or three. I took my 6 no matter what, without ever seeing them first. They are all sweet, loving and has adjusted into us family as we have accepted them and done everything we can to make them understand they are loved, respected and cared for the best I can.
  10. Rikki my grey was almost 2 when I adopted her. She has adapted very well, but i was her 4th home so it took her almost as long to really settle in and realize this was her forever home. Please understand that you can not "mold" them , they have their own personalities, and not many greys like to cuddle, if they do, it is on their own terms regardless of what age you got them.
  11. Sounds like the same scam running around. I had 2 friends see the same add, both were scams.
  12. Love tht deep voices agin, "what are you doing?" I foret that not all birds talk like mine in girlie voices, so when I hear grey talk in a mans voice, it always suprises me!
  13. Happy Biethday Ray! May it be the best day ever!
  14. Also, beware, 'natural' is different than organic....some natural fragrances can be harmful .
  15. No no no! Yankee Candles are by no means safe for birds! I live about 2 miles from the flagship store, and about 3 miles from the manufacturing plant where the candles are made. The smell is very potent from the fragrance they are using that particular day, even tho they have an incredible system for filtering the smell, due to the carcinogens they emit. Some people in the area get headaches even...so NO they are not safe for birds.
  16. That's greyt! I was very young, but I do remember her and that song quite well! Thanks for getting it stuck in my head for the rest of the nite!
  17. Thank you'll so much, I have been trying to get a visual of that for so long here....thank you for finally helping me to understand the process. I haven't done a deep can on my cages for a long time as I can't get them out the doors, but i think now I will invest in a steamer to get them really clean.
  18. Could you put a towel across the bottom? Not sure I understand what happened....where he got caught.
  19. So no floor clean up after? Just cage stuff? And do you take all the toys and perches out or can you leave them?
  20. When youdo the cages, what does the walls and floor look like when you are done? Do you have a wet mess to clean up?
  21. Happy Birthday Marco! You are one lucky fellow! 2 years is a big deal and tell your parronts to get used to it...pretty soon, you will know it all once you turn three!
  22. I would go with the one time fee of purchase vs. a monthly fee...dont see the need to pay someone else .
  23. Yikes, I just saw the price......perhaps I will shop for a cheaper model...it's out of my price range!
  24. What a wonderful review, I have been the thinking of investing in a steam cleaner for a couple of years but wanted a good one. The only thing holding me back is idont understand what kind of a mess it makes. Also do you remove all the perches and toys? I have hard wood floors and am concerned about the cleanup mess.
