  1. Most of the people on this forum use "abundant feeding" which means the grey always has food available. I keep Timber's pellets and seed available all the time, and I give him fresh foods (chop, sweet potatoes, quinoa mix and other things he will eat) twice a day. Don't leave fresh stuff in for over four hours because of deterioration. He gets a quarter slice of peanut butter toast and a bit of egg for breakfast. I also have a veggie skewer I hang with fresh peas in the pod, broccoli, cauliflower, carrot and whatever. Does he eat all of it? Not hardly. He also wastes a lot. He does maintain his weight and gets some healthy stuff in though, which is my goal.
  2. Don't feel silly! I was on the forum for a couple of months before lighting came up and I got mine. Live and learn. It's all good I was a total noob when I brought Timber home. If I hadn't found the forum during the first week after I rehomed him, I don't know what would have happened. He would probably still be glaring at me from the corner of his cage and eating a Walmart seed diet... Well, maybe not that bad, but we all start somewhere!
  3. I have seen the "best pellet" discussion on the forum many times. Harrison's and Roundybush seem to top the list of preferred pellets here. My bird will eat neither. If you are feeding your bird a good, balanced diet of things like chop, veggies, a bit of protein etc., the pellets aren't really necessary. There are several threads in the "bird food" room that will give you some ideas. Good luck
  4. I use 100% aloe juice in the winter when it is dry. Yes, it is supposed to be soothing to the skin. Good luck!
  5. I use the one in the link Dan posted. Works fine, holds up, and isn't expensive.

  7. They have a lot of behaviors we see as "odd." Twitching, head jerks and bobbing, the standard "bat bird" upside-down hanging from any object that will hold them, shaking like they are freezing (but apparently they are just doing a "feather adjustment"). You will quickly learn what is "normal" behavior for your grey, quirky as it may seem to us!
  8. I don't use any scented candles (or other things) in the area Timber is in either. I do still use warmers in other areas of the house. I live in a house that was built in 1915. It is large and, obviously, not very air-tight. I try to error on the conservative side. If I am in the room with Timber and can smell a scented item from there, I move it somewhere else. That hasn't happened since I first got him and was experimenting with placement. As you said though, I know people with parrots and other birds that continue to burn candles and use other types of air fresheners right in the room with their birds. I'm not taking that chance, but it does make me wonder.
  9. Hello and welcome to you and Echo! I have a TAG also, as do many others on the forum. Looking forward to seeing pics and hearing about your progress with Echo.
  10. LukeRex, this is where I got mine http://www.oldwillknottscales.com/bird-scale.html?gclid=COKWrIac9LsCFUtgMgod4y4AEA They work fine if Timber cooperates!
  11. Loved the video! Sully was a bit more accepting than Timber, but not going to be a snow bunny...
  12. Happy 2nd Anniversary! Loved the pic
  13. LOL Reading that makes me glad Timber has his beloved bell
  14. Timber takes awhile to get used to most things. Unfortunately, a cup of snow doesn't last long enough for him to make the adjustment!
  15. I brought a cup of snow in for Timber to try. He stuck his beak in once, squawked and gave me the "are you trying to poison me?" look...
  16. I don't burn candles, I use a warmer so the wick is not an issue. When I make them I don't even put a wick in.
  17. awwww... pretty baby! Thanks for the pics Glad to hear the two of you are getting along so well. Keep us posted!
  18. Welcome Miranda If I were you I would read the stickys. They cover a lot of useful information about diet, dos and don'ts etc. Ask any questions you may have, someone is always willing to give you whatever help they can
  19. Miranda80 - Hello and welcome! Why don't you start a new thread in the welcome and introduction room so you don't get "lost in the shuffle" in this one?
  20. Hello and welcome to you and your new baby! Timber's cage is very similar to that and it is great. It has some areas that are hard to get to and to clean, but it is very spacious. Post some pics when you get a chance. I'm glad you are taking it easy and not forcing interaction with him. The best thing is to let him set the pace when he gets comfortable. Good luck and God bless
  21. I was wondering the same. I understand the difference between beeswax and soy wax, but are we just talking burning beeswax for light?
