Oh I totally agree, my kids were calling me the crazy bird lady before she even came home and Im even WORSE now lol
-
yeah the only one true way is definately a DNA test they told me cuz marco had a flat head it would be a BOY but after dna testing she is a girl :D so ... best to have the test done when you can afford it!
-
if this is a new bird to you that you havent really handled much I would say no to the shoulder either ... it only takes the blink of an eye for them to bite'cha! give it time i know you are excited ... but let your baby adjust! it will be better in the long run
-
when marco is out and flying or on the floor she will climb up the dog cage that we have in the living room (its huge fits my golden retriever) and she'll climb up there and sit and the dog wont come out LOLOL!!!!!!!!!

Veges on a skewer is a great Idea!!! and dont stop trying he might just try them when you arent watching. I find I can hide alot of the veges in home made birdie bread for Marco which i make a big pan full and then cut up and freeze taking out what I need to last me for the week. I put everything from the cornbread mix to pellets and fresh veges and nuts she LOVES love love it! Marco is also a big jalapeno eater  amazing! As far as toys, theres lotta cool bird toys out there. From online to petsmart. My thought is you dont want a bored bird, that could lead to plucking. Marcos cage is decked out with various perches of different sizes and colors and textures, and lots of toys. Toys also hang on the top of her cage cuz its a playgym up there I also have what I call her "toy baskets" and yes more then 1 of lots of various FOOT toys. Marco also has a thing for bells! She tries to kill the bell and usually throws it across the room !!!!! :D Im not saying go out and spend 100's on toys ALOT of these toys you can make from home. Do some research on making parrot safe toys on youtube and such. Heck I take my friend to the bird store and he checks out the toys there and then goes home and makes me the same thing LOLOL! From chewing toys to foreging toys to foot toys, should have a mix of them all in there! -
I find myself saying alot of the times ... "Did you just say.................... ?" like as if shes gonna go ... Yea mom I did ... :rolleyes or I'll tell the family ... Did you hear that? they are always like No? So I swear they think Im hearing things but I know shes sayin words. I think shes saying "Going to work" and "What doing" too... yeah I did find myself stopping what I was doing to video her alot of the day long LOL aww you are welcome! so much to look forward to! im so happy that I got my lil camera too cuz its way better to be able to go back and look at her progress i have pics n vids from 6wks of age til last nite LOL :D
-
Marco is like that when I play back her vids .... shes very alert and listens lol I play some other vids for her some of sounds some of very vocal greys OMG Marco is not letting me do my work today! Shes stole my breakfast and now she wont get off my arm!!! So much for my snow day at home working!
-
absolutely I like to video her and sometimes I think she hams it up when the cams on .... Im definately entertained by her up there just chattering away lot of the time her eyes are half closed and she just seems so happy ... thanks for listening ...
-
I cant quite tell if marco's picked up a laff or not but she sure did pick up my little dogs yippy bark
-
isnt it just amazing? Marco started like that as well and still does it, but she is VERY happy and selfcontained sitting up there just a jabbering away and then she usually takes a 30 min nap afterwards lol like lulling herself into a nap ... shes a nut! HELLO!
-
Say what?!? <giggles>
-
Marco's new favorite word!!!!! bwahahahah .... I have this sinkin suspicion that like my kids I was so excited for them to talk (like I am for Marco to talk) then once they did .... now they dont stop  LAFFS !!!!!! Shes also saying what doing, and ut oh ... I think shes even said either Marco, taco or turbo which are the names of the dogs I'll see if I can catch some more of her jibberish later since its a SNOW DAY and Im working from home as you can see LMAO!!!!!!!!!

oh oh yes I totally agree on the eyes, I didnt even look at that until I opened every pic bigger they are a beautiful yellowy color ... definate much older then 9 mo. Marco was born dec 23 2011 and her eyes are just barely a pretty light grey right now with a slight yellow outter ring -
marco isnt a big fan of my dogs either but they dont mess with her. I have 2 yippee small ones and shes started to bark like them and one larger retriever and shes found that she can hang upside down from a perch on the outside of the cage and bite at him  .... so I am always aware and watching! be careful!
-
wow I should totally video marco in the shower we made her a little perch she sits on with some flexible wrap stuff round it so she had something to grip onto and she just loves the water ... I bring marco in the shower with me and let her sit ontop of the shower on the bar while I finish my shower then I get her and bring her in with me too sometimes

hey there and welcome to the forums plenty of others with way more experience then I, Ive only had my baby for lil over a yr but I can tell you this much. The growling is definately your birds defenses and a definate warning, you need to heed that warning and watch that body language. I would also caution on using a glove to pic your fid up. If you feel the need and have the ability to, try using another perch or a stick of some sort to pic them up. Opening the door and letting them come out on their own specially if they are giving you a warning growl might be the best way but you always gotta get them back in at nite. The only SURE way to sex your bird, is to have a DNA done, it might be possible for your vet to do that for you. I had marco sexed before bringing her home, they told me for sure they felt SHE was a boy ... but sure enough ... she isnt! But its not biggie love her anyways. Youve only had your new addition home for a few short days so .. let them take to their new surroundings, sights, and sounds before maybe tryin to handle or train. Greys take time to earn that trust and you should really start there. I like to sing to marco LOL not sure if she appreciates it as much as I do LOL she usually falls sleep when I do, but talking to them and giving them a variety of toys including foreging toys are real important too since your baby looks like perhaps a few feathers are missing in the front dont want a picker! Diet is always important too, as well as sunlight seems like you are eager to learn and give your baby a happy home so I wish you lots of luck. great peeps here to help you in that process. my biggest advice is to TAKE IT SLOW you will have LOTS of time w/your baby so let them lead the way! your pics are great too! -
that is a super great pic did you teach dayo to lay on his back? i would think it was unnatural for a bird to be like that Ive tried w/marco but once on her back she wont let go of my fingers LOL and she gets mad until she flips back over .. She is a cuddler but ONLY on HER time when she wants it and it really only happens when its dark I can handle her in the day and play with her all day long but NO NO scritches till evening. and the funniest thing is ... if I stop scratching her she makes a lil chirp chirp like to say HEY ?!? you aint done yet are you? so i'll scratch a lil more and stop and she'll chirp again and open an eye like to say ... you aint done lady my heads still down LOL. just cant get her on her back like that. she is 14mo old now and has been this way since I brought her home at 4mo

Marco is trimmed but she flies from her cage to the kitchen just fine. I agree with the harness as well getting them used to it and taking them outside (i thought) was great exercise. she LOVES to fly on the harness plus the sunshine is awesome for her. I think she likes the grass under her feet too when she lands

aww pretty baby thanks for posting pics and welcome to the forum cant wait to hear more stories about your new adventures

All I can say is, that it definately kills my friend had 12 baby chicks in his house raising them until big enough to be put in the pens outside (chickens) was boiling water to make tea on the stove ... phone rang... was his son ... by the time he got back in ... he lost 10 out of 12. Its definately a risk that I also found I was unwilling to make when you considered the money I spent just to buy the cage and the bird a few more dollars could get you a stainless steel set, or just start to buy it a piece at a time. It really just happens that fast. Course that was only 1 change that we made, there was several others that I did as well like the plug ins and scentzy warmers and candles and carpet shake lol you just learn to make different choices

aerial.2000 replied to melba36's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
I totally agree I was going to say something about the shoulder .... Marco makes me nervous on my shoulder and she has bit my ear and ripped an earing right out of my ear within the blink of an eye it happened so fast -
Help new bird who only likes males
aerial.2000 replied to Bms's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
I am not sure what makes one grey favor one person over another .... what makes them favor a male over a female ... ALL i know is it takes time, and if you feel discouraged your baby will know that as well. Stay positive... chin up and I use a perch to get marco DOWN from high places cuz shes a stinker but thats it other wise its my hand ... course she used to step up nicely on it NOW shes more into chewing it and pushing it away versus stepping up on it ...
